226: Living for Purpose Over Pleasure: Why Chasing Happiness Is Making You Miserable

Are you doing everything society says will make you happy — and still feeling empty? In this episode of The Purpose Effect, hosts Alesha and David tackle the dangerous lie that "do what makes you happy" is the path to a good life. Through raw, honest stories — from a chaotic morning gone wrong to decades of marriage struggles — they unpack why chasing momentary pleasure leads to addiction, broken relationships, and depression, while choosing purpose, discipline, and faith leads to lasting joy and peace. Key topics covered: Why happiness and purpose can't coexist as your driving force What Jesus meant by "deny yourself and take up your cross" How leaning into discomfort produces spiritual and personal growth The difference between happiness (circ circumstantial) and joy (deep, lasting) Real marriage advice: pushing through the hard seasons Consistency, obedience, and aligning your will with God's desires Biblical examples of pleasure vs. purpose (Sodom & Gomorrah, the disciples) Keywords: Christian living, purpose over pleasure, biblical joy vs happiness, spiritual growth, faith and obedience, marriage advice, Christian marriage, deny yourself take up your cross, Luke 9:23, Christian podcast, finding purpose, overcoming depression, spiritual discipline, Christian testimony, purpose-driven life, God's desires vs our desires, lean into the uncomfortable, lasting peace, Christian encouragement. 225: It Stops With Me: Breaking Generational Chains Through Faith

THE 3 MOST DANGEROUS WORDS A MAN CAN SAY: "I'VE GOT THIS" What if the very thing you think makes you strong is actually keeping you weak? Men are taught to toughen up, carry the load, bury their struggles, and figure everything out themselves. But that's not the model of biblical manhood. In this powerful episode of The Purpose Effect, host David Rosenfeldt sits down with his brother in Christ, Donnie Carroll, leadership coach, entrepreneur, and founder of Bloodline Breakers, to discuss what happens when men stop pretending they have everything under control and start surrendering to God's purpose. What began as an uncertain introduction became a life-changing brotherhood through prayer, honest conversations, a powerful men's conference, and baptism. Together, David and Donnie explore what it really means to stand firm, act like men, break destructive generational patterns, and become the husbands, fathers, leaders, and brothers God created us to be. IN THIS EPISODE: Why "I've got this" can be three dangerous words for a man. How Christian brotherhood builds strength rather than weakness. Why accountability is about restoration, not condemnation. The life-changing power of prayer, baptism, and obedience. How to break generational patterns and build a godly legacy. Why strong men need other strong men. How everyday actions demonstrate genuine Christian faith. Why discipleship can change families for generations. David also shares a deeply personal testimony about hearing God's direction, putting down distractions, and walking away from a habit he felt called to surrender. This is not about becoming the toughest man in the room. It's about becoming the man God created you to be. 📖 Proverbs 27:17 (NIV) "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." 🔥 THE CHALLENGE Men, stop trying to carry everything alone. Find your brothers. Open your Bible. Get on your knees. Pray with your wife. Lead your family by example. And when God tells you to move, move. 222: Consistency + Effort = Success

Consistency + Effort = Success Success isn't built in one great day. Neither is your faith. Neither is your emotional health. Neither is your physical health. It's built by showing up again and again, especially on the days when you don't feel like it. In Episode 222 of The Purpose Effect, I get honest about something I continue to learn in my own life: your bad days don't define you, and neither do your good days. What matters is the consistent effort you make to become better. I share a recent situation where frustration got the better of me. I got angry. I spiraled. And that attitude started splashing onto the people around me. I couldn't change what I'd already done. But I could pivot. That's where growth happens. We look at consistency across the three areas we've talked about since the beginning of The Purpose Effect: 🙏 SPIRITUALLY — Building your foundation through Scripture, prayer, and aligning what you want with what God wants for your life. ❤️ EMOTIONALLY — Learning to pause, listen, apologize, ask for help, forgive yourself, and stop allowing your emotions to splash onto everyone around you. 💪 PHYSICALLY — Taking responsibility for your body through movement, nutrition, healthy habits, and consistently doing what you can with what you've been given. This isn't about perfection. It's about effort. It's about getting up after a bad day and saying: Yesterday is over. What am I going to do TODAY? James 1:22 reminds us that hearing God's Word must lead to doing it. Galatians 6:9 reminds us not to become weary in doing good. So here's my challenge for the next 7 days: Spiritually: Spend 10 focused minutes in Scripture and prayer. Emotionally: Listen to someone you love without interrupting or immediately trying to fix their problem. Listen to understand—not simply to respond. Physically: Choose one practical commitment appropriate for your health and follow through. Write them down. Tell somebody who will hold you accountable. Then SHOW UP. Today. Tomorrow. And the day after that. You don't need to be better than another man. You need to become better than you were yesterday. Consistency + Effort = Success. That is The Purpose Effect. 220: We are defined by our actions, The pivot.

What do you do when things don't go the way you planned? Do you spiral? Get angry? Start beating yourself up? Do you start asking, “Why does this always happen to me?” Or do you pivot? In this episode of The Purpose Effect, David Rosenfeldt gets personal about a frustrating moment: recording an entire podcast only to discover that almost all of it was gone. That moment exposed something bigger. “I’m trying.” Trying to get it right. Trying to fix things. Trying to make things work. Until a friend called him on it: Stop trying. Start doing. The pivot begins when we catch ourselves before frustration becomes a spiral. It means examining where we are, owning what we can own, giving what we cannot control to God, changing our actions, and moving forward. David explores this through Scripture, business, forgiveness, faith, personal responsibility, and the everyday situations that reveal who we really are. Because faith doesn't mean sitting still waiting for God to remove every obstacle. Sometimes you have to pray—and then take the cap off the highlighter. Sometimes you have to get out from underneath the tree dropping acorns. Sometimes you have to turn off the blender in your head. And sometimes you simply have to say: That didn't go the way I wanted. What am I going to do next? We are not defined by the moment something goes wrong. We reveal who we're becoming by what we do next. Catch it. Own it. Give it to God. Change your action. Keep moving. That is the pivot. If this episode speaks to you, LIKE, FOLLOW, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE it with somebody who may be stuck in their own spiral. The Purpose Effect. It is a lifestyle. It is a journey.
