Episode 15: When life Doesn't go as Planned

What happens when everything you built your life around begins to fall apart? Aaron Erman discovered that surrender may cost everything, but Christ is enough. After nearly 20 years in Fire, EMS, rescue, and paramedicine, Aaron Erman knows firsthand the adrenaline, trauma, burnout, pride, and pressure that come with serving as a First Responder. What began as an exciting career eventually became a place where Aaron was forced to confront a deeper question: Where does your identity and Faith rest when the things you thought were secure are suddenly taken away?In this episode of the Living Mission First Podcast, Jeremy Wade sits down with Aaron for a deeply personal conversation about Courage, suffering, surrender, and learning to trust God when life looks nothing like you planned.Aaron shares his journey from wildland firefighting and high-risk mountain rescue to experiencing burnout early in his career. But the greatest challenges came at home. His daughter Hazel was born with profound disabilities. Years later, while pregnant with their son Russell, Aaron’s wife, Julia, was diagnosed with cervical cancer and underwent chemotherapy. After Russell was born, he began experiencing the same devastating seizures as Hazel. Eventually, their family learned both children have an extraordinarily rare, life-limiting genetic disease. At the same time, Aaron faced losing his career, income, insurance, and security he had worked years to build. At his lowest point, Aaron reached the end of himself, and discovered what it meant for Faith to become more than something he simply professed. It became something he had to live.Today, Aaron continues serving as a paramedic and leading peer support member, bringing the hope of Christ into some of the darkest moments people face. His family's journey has also given them a heart for the disability community through The Hazelnut Movement, helping others see the dignity, purpose, and value of people with disabilities. If you're a First Responder carrying more than anyone realizes, a family walking through circumstances you never expected, or someone struggling to understand what God is doing in the middle of suffering, Aaron's story offers a powerful invitation: you do not have to carry it alone. Trust God, find community, and keep taking the next faithful step. Episode 14: Having an Intentional Marriage

Is there hope for first responder marriages? What happens when the badge becomes your identity, and the job begins taking more from your marriage than you ever intended to give? After 35 years in state and federal law enforcement, Tim Goode knows the pressure, hypervigilance, sacrifice, temptation, and relentless demands that come with the calling. But alongside his wife, Kyle Goode, and through 34 years of marriage, he has discovered something even more important: a First Responder marriage cannot simply survive the career, it can be strengthened through it when Christ remains the foundation. In this episode of the Living Mission First Podcast, Jeremy Wade sits down with Tim and Kyle Goode of Shield for the Badge for an honest and deeply encouraging conversation about marriage, Faith, identity, Courage, and finding lasting joy in Christ.Tim and Kyle understand First Responder marriages from both sides of the badge. From Tim's demanding career with the U.S. Marshals Service, including Special Operations assignments and extended time away, to Kyle navigating the uncertainty and sacrifice of being the spouse waiting at home, their marriage was tested early. Just weeks before their wedding, Tim was deployed to Ruby Ridge and didn't know if he would make it home in time. Through it all, they learned that their greatest source of strength wasn't the job, themselves, or even each other, it was Christ. But this conversation goes far beyond marriage.Tim shares how putting his identity in Christ completely transformed his purpose in law enforcement. The mission was no longer simply putting bad guys in jail, it became seeing coworkers, prisoners, and the people he encountered as a mission field. One extraordinary story reveals how a violent prisoner Tim once fought eventually told him that through "Bible trivia," a pastor, and the witness of Tim's conduct, he had found Jesus, and although sentenced to life in prison, he had "never been more free."Why does this episode matter? Because First Responders and their spouses don't have to accept broken marriages, misplaced identity, isolation, or spiritual exhaustion as inevitable consequences of the calling. There is hope in Christ. There is purpose beyond the badge. And there is incredible joy when a husband and wife stop living separate lives and begin pursuing Jesus and His mission together.Tim and Kyle remind us that courage isn't only required on the street, it takes courage to pursue Christ, protect your marriage, communicate honestly, mentor others, and live your faith openly. They share how faith, courage, communication, and identity in Christ can strengthen First Responder marriages and bring lasting joy.About Mission First AllianceMission First Alliance is a national non-profit bringing Real Hope to first responders and their families. Episode 13: Finding Real Hope in the Recovery

Can recovery truly heal the soul? Matty Fiorenza shares why lasting freedom, joy, and hope are found only through Jesus Christ. After years of serving as a firefighter/paramedic with the Anaheim Fire Department, Matty Fiorenza experienced the unseen cost of a career spent serving others. Childhood trauma, addiction, burnout, injury, organizational betrayal, suicidal despair, and countless attempts at healing led him down nearly every path the first responder wellness movement has to offer. Yet through every treatment, recovery program, and modality, one truth became unmistakably clear: lasting transformation is found in Jesus Christ alone. In this powerful episode of the Living Mission First Podcast, Jeremy Wade sits down with Matty Fiorenza for an honest, courageous conversation about recovery, identity, suffering, and the joy that comes from fully surrendering to Christ. Matty shares his remarkable journey from addiction and hopelessness to discovering his true identity as a child of God. Drawing from years of experience in first responder recovery, peer support, treatment programs, and mentoring others, he offers a unique perspective on both the strengths and limitations of today's wellness movement. This conversation goes beyond trauma, resilience, and mental health. It explores the deeper questions every first responder eventually faces: Who am I when the badge comes off? Where does true healing come from? What happens when recovery addresses the mind but leaves the soul untouched?Jeremy and Matty discuss why courage begins with surrender, why identity must be rooted in Christ instead of a career, and why the Church has a critical role in bringing real hope to first responders and their families. Together they challenge listeners to pursue a recovery that doesn't simply manage symptoms but transforms lives through the Gospel. If you are a First Responder, spouse, chaplain, ministry leader, peer supporter, or someone walking alongside those carrying invisible wounds, this episode is a powerful reminder that no amount of success, treatment, or self-effort can replace the hope, peace, and joy found in Jesus. Matty's testimony points beyond recovery itself to the One who restores broken lives and gives lasting purpose.About Mission First AllianceMission First Alliance is a national non-profit bringing Real Hope to first responders and their families. Episode 12: Leadership That Changes Lives

Great Challenges Provide Great OpportunitiesWhat if the greatest threat facing our first responders isn't what happens on the street, but what happens inside the agency? In this powerful episode of the Living Mission First Podcast, Jeremy Wade sits down with Conrad Weaver, award-winning filmmaker, host of the First Responder Wellness Podcast, creator of the groundbreaking documentary PTSD911, and a passionate advocate for leadership development and first responder wellness. Together, they explore the unseen battles facing first responders, the leadership challenges impacting agency culture, and why true healing requires more than resilience training alone.Conrad shares his journey from filmmaker to nationally recognized voice in the first responder wellness movement. Through years of ride-alongs, documentary work, and conversations with firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and dispatchers, he witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of trauma, PTSD, burnout, and suicide. Episode 11: From Burnout to Peace

“If there is a God, how can He be good… and how can we see some of the things we see?” Former paramedic and pastor Jeff Richardson asks the question every First Responder eventually faces and then points us to the only answer that can sustain the soul. Former paramedic Jeff Richardson shares how faith in Christ overcame burnout, anxiety, and hopelessness in his own life and how other first responders can find Hope in pursuing Christ. In this powerful episode of the Living Mission First Podcast, Jeremy Wade sits down with former EMT, paramedic, pastor, and church planter Jeff Richardson for an honest conversation about burnout, identity, suffering, and the deep joy found in Christ. Drawing from years serving on ambulances across Tennessee and Georgia, Jeff opens up about the emotional weight First Responders carry, the pediatric calls, sleepless nights, anxiety, second-guessing, and the struggle to reconcile evil and suffering with a good and sovereign God. But this episode is more than a conversation about trauma, it’s a call to Courage, Faith, and lasting hope. Jeff shares how God met him in the middle of exhaustion and burnout, transforming his perspective from simply surviving shift work to seeing EMS as a mission field. His message is deeply encouraging for every First Responder wrestling with identity, purpose, anxiety, or spiritual exhaustion. This conversation gets to the heart of Mission First Alliance: helping First Responders pursue Christ while faithfully serving their communities. Jeff’s vulnerability and wisdom remind us that burnout is real, but so is the sustaining grace of God.
