That Physical Culture Podcast

Renee Walker & Justine Rigby

Join Renee and Justine for a candid, cheeky and totally heartfelt look at Physical Culture in Australia, celebrating the women, the wins and the wonderfully unhinged moments that make Physie what it is. We come from a position of being absolute novices (well actually, we're moving into Intermediate in 2026, if you want to be technical!), so if you're looking for an expert viewpoint of Physie, you're in the wrong place! This podcast has zero affiliation with BJP Physie and/or our club. It's a manifestation of many hundreds of conversations we've had about physie over the past three years. Our views and opinions do not represent those of BJP Physical Culture and/or our club.  Where we poke some fun at physie (all types of physie) please know, we absolutely love doing Physie, but like all creative outlets, there's always little things that surprise us and make us laugh and we want to share those laughs with others! It's all in jest, and we have no desire to offend or upset anyone. Hopefully these discussions will open up the Physie world to others, and ultimately grow our amazing sport! With love and appreciation, Renee & Justine.

Mental As Anything - Episode 19

Send us Fan Mail Zone Performance Day is looming, which means Renee and Justine have reached that delightful point of the physie calendar where you've done the training, you know the syllabus, the performance wear is ready… and now your own brain would like to become involved. And unfortunately, the brain can be mental as anything. So this fortnight, we've called in professional help. Joining us is sports psychologist Gemma Illescas from Always Flying Psychology, who works with athletes on the mental side of performance: confidence, focus, competition nerves, pressure, emotional regulation and what happens when things don't quite go to plan. And we have QUESTIONS. Why can you feel great at class and then completely unravel the minute there's a judge sitting in front of you? What happens when you start comparing yourself to everyone else? Can you actually think yourself into being confident? How do you stop one mistake from destroying the rest of your performance? And is it okay to admit that yes, we'd quite like to WIN THE BLOODY THING? Gemma also helps us unpack something Renee has been wrestling with this year: the difference between being pessimistic and realistic, particularly when you know you haven't had the preparation you wanted. Rather than trying to plaster over those thoughts with positive vibes only, we talk about how to reframe them into something more constructive and a whole lot less destructive. We get into motivation, self-talk, comparison, nerves and disappointment, and how to focus on the things you can actually control when so much of competitive physie, including what the judges think of you, is completely out of your hands. Because maybe the goal isn't to walk onto the floor without nerves, doubts or negative thoughts. Maybe it's learning how to walk out there with them and perform anyway. With Zone staring us directly in the face, the timing of this conversation couldn't be better. Will Renee and Justine actually put Gemma's advice into practice? We'll report back. 😂 Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Interclubs & An APDA Reality Check - Episode 18

Send us Fan Mail This fortnight, the girls are deep in interclub season, and apparently Renee’s definition of “I’m definitely not competing” is now “give me five minutes while I put my performance wear on.” We kick things off with not one but two BJP interclubs, starting with our own club hosting an event where Renee had every intention of remaining safely on the sidelines. That lasted until she found herself changed, numbered and ready to go. Because of course she did. Then it was off to Taree Great Lakes Physie, where Justine casually went and WON her section. Yes, FIRST PLACE. Which finally provides Renee with the hard evidence required to prove the argument she has been making all year: JUSTINE IS ACTUALLY GOOD AT PHYSIE. Jussy can no longer hide behind the Andy-to-Renee’s-Hamish narrative. We have receipts. And a first-place medal. There’s also a little product review as the girls put Purty Underwear through the very scientific and highly prestigious That Physical Culture Podcast testing process. Thoughts are shared. Opinions are obviously had. And then… APDA happened. The girls head along to their first APDA event at the Central Coast Physie and Dance Interclub, and what an introduction it was. The atmosphere, the performances, the talent, the spectacle... we absolutely LOVED it. However. There is a small matter we need to address. You may recall us making some rather confident statements about BJP being the hardest code. We would now like to formally revise those comments. 😂 After watching APDA competitors absolutely SEND IT on the floor, we have some thoughts. Some apologies. And quite possibly an entirely new understanding of what “hard” looks like. Consider the record officially amended. It’s interclub season, everyone’s competitive, Renee apparently can’t attend an event without entering it, Justine is out there WINNING things, and the girls have discovered yet another corner of physie to obsess over. Just another completely normal fortnight at That Physical Culture Podcast. 💃🏆 Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Juzz Rigby, Uncensored - Episode 17

Send us Fan Mail This fortnight on That Physical Culture Podcast, we’re flipping the script. After countless episodes of Justine insisting she’s the Andy to Renee’s Hamish, we’ve decided it’s finally time to let her have the microphone… uninterrupted. (Well, mostly. Old habits die hard.) This episode is all about getting to know the woman behind the one-liners, the media powerhouse, and the self-proclaimed sidekick. Renee puts Justine in the hot seat to chat about everything from her dream physie goals and what keeps her coming back year after year, to the parts of the sport she’d happily leave behind if she were handed the rule book. The girls also dive into Justine’s honest thoughts on this wonderfully weird, wildly addictive sport we’ve all somehow become obsessed with. Expect plenty of laughs, a few surprises, and the usual amount of oversharing. To wrap things up, we’ve got another Poddy Pick for the physie fam. This fortnight we’re shining a light on the incredible Back to the Mac – Fleetwood Mac Experience. If you’re a Fleetwood Mac fan (or simply appreciate brilliant live music), do yourself a favour and check them out. Until next time… keep pointing those toes, recruiting your friends, and remember… it’s only a cult if you’re not in it. 💃 Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Nikki returns to the pod to chat all things competition etiquette – those little things that can make a huge difference to your own day and everyone else’s. Gird your loins, Ladies. It's comp season - Episode 15

Send us Fan Mail No guest this week… which means absolutely nobody was keeping Justine and Renee in line. With Ribbon Competition officially kicking off the season, the girls unpack the excitement, the nerves and the dawning realisation that competition season is no longer lurking on the horizon… it’s here. Renee shares her annual bout of chronic competition anxiety, while the pair chat through everything that comes with this time of year and why the Physie Train has officially left the station. They also dive into Season 3 of America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, discussing the phenomenal institution the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have become and why Netflix has the world completely hooked. It’s also the inaugural Poddy Book Club, with Justine and Renee reviewing The Titanic Story of Evelyn by none other than honorary Physie Hall of Famer, Lady Lisa Wilkinson. Expect a healthy dose of Titanic history, a full-blown fan-girl moment from Renee, and somehow… another rant about the baffling incompetence of the less fair sex. As always, there’s a Poddy Pick, with Justine shining a spotlight on the fabulous Star Wigs at Paddy’s Markets and Westfield Parramatta (plus online) for all your Physie Fame hair needs. So buckle up. Competition season has arrived, Interclubs are charging towards us at alarming speed, and frankly… we’re not emotionally prepared. All aboard. Spew. The Marching Qween, Ms Natalie Allan - Episode 14

Send us Fan Mail Justine is back in the studio (Renee's garage) after her whirlwind trip to San Francisco, and naturally, Renee has questions. Lots of questions. From driverless cars to American adventures, Jussy gives us the full download on her trip and why she highly rates traveling with out kids. The girls also share their thoughts on the recent Kylie Minogue documentary and, in a shocking development to absolutely nobody, Renee does not hold back. Opinions are had. Reviews are given. Long live the Aussie Princess of Pop! Then we get to the main event. This week we’re joined by none other than the Marching Qween herself, Natalie Allan from Brisbane Water United Physie. If you’ve ever wondered how some people make marching look effortless while the rest of us are just trying not to run into each other, Nat is here to help. Natalie takes us behind the scenes of one of physie’s most iconic disciplines, sharing what it takes to become a great marcher, the common mistakes people make, and why marching deserves far more respect than it often gets.  We also dive into a whole range of physie topics, swap stories, have plenty of laughs, and inevitably end up down a few physie rabbit holes along the way. As always, it’s informative, entertaining, and just a little bit chaotic. And because Renee never misses an opportunity for a bargain, she also comes armed with a special offer from our friends at Instinctive Health. Listeners can receive 50% off the Instinctive Health Reset Program, Health Audit and the Teen Healthy Mind and Mind Program, when purchased before the end of the financial year using the code TCPC50. Kia Morgan, The Queen of Codes - Episode 13

Send us Fan Mail This week on That Physical Culture Podcast, Renee flies solo while Justine continues living her best holiday life in San Fran, but stepping into the co-host seat is someone more than qualified for the job. Enter: physie’s very own Queen of Codes, Kia Morgan. She's not a double dipping diva, she's not even a triple threat, she's physie loco, baby! Honestly, if there’s a physie association in Australia, chances are Kia’s done it. And this year? She’s casually taking on BJP, APDA, United and Burns all at once because apparently one syllabus simply isn’t enough. Renee and Kia dive into how on earth she manages to fit it all in, how she methodically learns and separates the work for each code, and what makes each style so unique.  We chat through her impressive accolades, her genuine love for physie in all its forms, and the deep respect she has for the sport across every association. We also explore Kia’s incredible family connection to physie, from her Nanny to her mum Kelly, as well as her sister. For Kia, physie isn’t just a hobby — it’s part of her identity, her family history and her life. And when we say this girl is an encyclopedia of physie information, we mean it. Whether it’s syllabus differences, competition culture, performance styles or physie history, Kia knows her stuff. Safe to say this will not be her last appearance on the pod. Enjoy Kia Morgan 💃 Instinctive HealthEvidence-based care focused on the connection between your gut, mind, and your overall wellbeing.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. The Short King of the Physie Floor - Episode 12

Send us Fan Mail This week on That Physical Culture Podcast, Renee is flying solo while Jussy lives her best holiday life in the US, and honestly… it's rone-ry! There’s a strange energy in the studio without her emotional support co-host, but the show must go on. Renee talks through her latest “Physie Anywhere” photos, as well as the late-onset online banter with the BJP Powers-That-Be. Then, in news that has sent Renee into a full-blown journalistic conniption, she reveals she’s made contact with none other than THE Lisa Wilkinson. Yes, that Lisa Wilkinson. Australian media royalty. Poise. Presentation. Power suits. The woman who basically raised half of us through breakfast television. To celebrate, the girls are launching a little Physie Book Club and reading Wilkinson’s incredible book, The Titantic Story of Evelyn, which took Wilkinson three years to complete. Then we move into the main event: our chat with Jake from Bangor Georges River Physie in EP Physie. Or as we now know him, The Short King of the Physie Floor. At just 12 years old, Jake is one of the very few boys doing physie in Australia, and honestly? He’s an absolute superstar. We chat about how he got started, what it’s like being a boy in a traditionally female sport, the support he’s received from his club and community, and his incredible success so far. Jake is funny, humble, determined and completely loveable, and by the end of the episode we had collectively decided he must be protected at all costs.
