You're Not Broken: The Real Fix for Pelvic Floor Issues (Hint: It's Not Kegels) [S1 E9]

In this episode of Skills for Moms, pelvic floor physical therapist Dr. Becky Allen explains why pelvic floor dysfunction is rarely just a “down there” issue and why Kegels are not a universal fix. She walks through pelvic health across the lifespan, from kids’ constipation and bladder habits to puberty, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, prolapse, diastasis recti, and what actually happens in pelvic floor therapy. This conversation empowers women to stop normalizing leaks, pain, pressure, and shame, and instead seek whole-body, individualized care that helps them heal, advocate for themselves, and thrive long-term. Why “just do Kegels” is often incomplete advice, and sometimes the wrong advice. How the pelvic floor connects to breathing, the diaphragm, hips, feet, abdominal pressure, and the nervous system. Why pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause often reveal dysfunction that has been building for years. Common childhood habits that can contribute to later pelvic floor issues, including constipation, stool withholding, and “just in case” peeing. Simple constipation support discussed in the episode: more fiber, toilet posture with feet supported, blowing out instead of breath-holding, and talking with a pediatrician when symptoms persist. The Root Cause Was Breathing: A Doctor's Story of Missed Diagnoses & Breakthrough Healing [S1, E8]

Moms Are Sensing That Something is Off —but Medicine Keeps Missing the Why Dr. Chad Capps, orthodontist and airway-focused clinician, shares how mouth breathing, tongue posture, and underdevelopment of the jaw can impact a child’s sleep, behavior, facial growth, and long-term health. Drawing from both clinical experience and his own personal health journey, he explains why airway issues often go undetected and why treating the root cause—not just straightening teeth—matters. This episode empowers moms to trust their intuition, recognize early red flags, and confidently navigate a team-based, holistic approach to their child’s care. Show Notes: ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) Evaluation Recommended for assessing adenoids, tonsils, nasal obstruction, and allergies that commonly contribute to mouth breathing and airway restriction. Nasal Breathing Support Simple tools like nasal rinses and nasal strips (Breathe Right®–style) were discussed as low‑hanging fruit to improve airflow and sleep.
