Failing People & The Unfailing Word of God | The Kingdom of Solomon

Chapter four of 1 Kings gives a description of the kingdom under Solomon, and what a magnificent kingdom it was! The Bible commentator Matthew Henry said, “Never did the crown of Israel shine so brightly as it did when Solomon wore it, never in his father’s days, never in the days of any of his successors; nor was that kingdom ever so glorious a type of the kingdom of the Messiah as it was then.” As great as the kingdom under Solomon, it was but a foreshadowing of the far greater kingdom of Jesus Christ!

Failing People & The Unfailing Word of God | A Hearing Heart

The story recorded in 1 Kings 3 is well-known. The young Solomon is asked an incredible question: "Ask what I shall give you." The question is incredible because of the one asking. If a homeless person said to you, "Ask what I shall give you," you would probably be skeptical; but when God asks the question, excitement builds inside your heart. This is the Creator and Sovereign of the universe, for whom nothing is impossible! Solomon could have asked for anything! That makes his request stunning. He asks for "an understanding mind to govern your people." Ponder this. Is that what you would've asked for? May we carefully hear what God's Word is teaching us in this wonderful passage!

Failing People & The Unfailing Word of God | The Promised King

In 1 Kings 2, as “David’s time to die drew near,” he called for Solomon. He gave him an important charge about manhood but also guided him to take care of some unfinished business. By the time we reach the end of the passage, three men are dead. This chapter can be troubling to read: was the new king acting justly, or was he eliminating rivals out of fear and self-promotion? We will wrestle with this question as we study the text, while also keeping John 5:39 and Luke 24:27 in mind to see the glorious truths to which this chapterpoints us.

Failing People & The Unfailing Word of God | Who Will Be King?

The book of 1 Kings covers a little more than 100 years of history (about 961 to 850 B.C.), telling the story of fourteen kings who ruled over all or some of the Israelites. The book begins with David as King, but he is fading fast. Solomon is supposed to take his father’s place on the throne, but David’s other son, Adonijah, disregards this plan and exalts himself to be the next king. What will David do? He’s already grieved the death of one of his sons for treason (Absalom, cf. 2 Samuel 18). Will Adonijah also die?

Living Faith: A Study of James | Mutual Accountability

As James brings his letter to a conclusion, he touches on three final topics: Truthfulness, Prayer (which we considered last week), and Mutual Accountability. In Genesis 4, after murdering his brother and being questioned by God, Cain asked: “am I my brother’s keeper?” It’s been said that the rest of the Bible is an answer to this question, and the answer is affirmative. Repeatedly in the New Testament we see the obligations that believers have to one another, and the point is clear: as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are responsible to care for and watch for one another. We ought to care for the spiritual well-being of our fellow believers! This is stated clearly and powerfully in the final two verses of James’ letter. May we heed it!

Living Faith: A Study of James | Prayer

As James brings his letter to a conclusion, he touches on three final topics: Truthfulness (which we considered last week), Prayer, and Mutual Accountability.Prayer is one of the most important activities in which a person can engage themselves. Charles Spurgeon once said, "Neglect of private prayer is the locust which devours the strength of the church". Why would he say this? It is because he understood the great emphasis God's word gives to prayer. Luke 18:1 says of our Lord, "And he told them a parable of the effect that they ought always to pray on not lose heart". Colossians 4:2 says, "Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving". Prayer must be a vital part of the Christian life, which means prayerlessness is a serious detriment. May we carefully give heed to James' teachings of prayer.

Living Faith: A Study of James | Truthfulness

Truthfulness (or honesty, integrity of speech) is one of the most important virtues for relationships. Perpetual dishonesty will ruin a person’s ability to trust and therefore to have a meaningful relationship with you. So in the body of Christ, it is imperative that we are truthful, which is what James seeks to communicate in this next verse. As he begins to wrap up his letter, he concludes with three separate topics (similar to how Paul deals with several topics at the end of 1 Thessalonians 5), the first of which is truthfulness. George Washington got it right: “Honesty is always the best policy.”

Living Faith: A Study of James | How to Be Patient

Patience is hard. Naturally, we don’t like to wait for things, whether it be waiting for our food in the drive-thru, waiting for test results, waiting for an online purchase to arrive, or waiting for justice. The original readers of James’ letter were suffering at the hands of rich unbelievers. They wanted their suffering to end! But the Lord tells them to be patient, and gives several important reasons why they should be patient. As John Calvin wrote, “There is no place for faith if we expect God to fulfill immediately what He promises.” May we learn to exercise faith by patiently waiting for the Lord, trusting His good and wise purposes.
