    Nightmares on Elm Street #1 with Bobby Trippett

    On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Bobby Trippett (from the GRINDBIN PODCAST) have been where the river ran and avoided drownin' in a sunless sea in order to discuss 1991's NIGHTMARES ON ELM STREET #1. Is this episode about the man of our dreams Freddy Krueger?  Yes it is.  Eventually. First Matt gets very personal and tells the story of when he first met his wife and why the date June 13th holds a special place in his heart.  It's a sweet story that has all of the necessary ingredients (a Pinky and the Brain t-shirt, the somewhat remembered Ivan Reitman movie SIX DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS, the band Stabbing Westward, a weekend pass to Wizard World Chicago 1998, and HALLOWEEN H20) to create a love that lasts a lifetime. But then it's time to do the Freddy -- and there is no better person than Bobby to do the Freddy.  That's not an innuendo.  It's a fact.  Bobby's a true Fredhead, a Dream Warrior, possibly even a Dream Master and he expertly navigates us through this rather insane comic. This episode is so great that Matt only briefly mentions Night Man (who, by the way, could totally kick Freddy's ass).     The Night Man vs. Wolverine #0 with A. Lee Martinez

    On this episode Matt and special guest co-host A. Lee Martinez (author of MONSTER, CHASING THE MOON, GIL'S ALL FRIGHT DINER, and more!) get trapped in a Murderworld/sewer/abandoned funhouse and decide that the only way out is to talk about 1995's THE NIGHT MAN VS. WOLVERINE #0. Yes, your eyes and ears are not deceiving you, Night Man (or, "The Night Man" as he's apparently called - Matt refuses to accept this because he's always known Johnny Domino as Nightman) is actually here and he's (inexplicably) brought Wolverine with him! Both Matt and Lee think Night Man is cool, so if you're a skeptic then you better prepare to have your mind changed. In fact, Lee is such a big Night Man fan that he sent a letter enclosed in an illustrated envelope to Marvel imploring them to not cancel the comic.  That's some true dedication! As a bonus, you can listen as Matt gets awkwardly sentimental while sharing the profound impact Lee's novel CHASING THE MOON had on him. Oh, and Night Man is way cooler than Wolverine.     Wildthing #1 with Ian Anderson

    On this episode Matt and returning special guest co-host Ian Anderson flunk out of Arcade Officer Academy for not knowing how to handle a "hot program" - which is something they would've learned if they weren't too busy talking about 1993's WILDTHING #1. Who is Nikki Doyle?  Is she the titular Wildthing? These are questions that will (possibly) be answered, but first Matt decides to share his aspirations of becoming his neighborhood's resident Doctor Doolittle and then mixes up the Pet Shop Boys with Erasure. Proving himself to be the more professional host, Ian comes to the episode having done actual research on WILDTHING and Marvel UK in general.  So listen for his voice if you want to learn something. If you don't want to learn anything, then listen for Matt's voice because he's probably talking about Nightman or random comic strips from the mid-90's.     Waterworld: Children of Leviathan #1 with Sebastian O'Brien

    On this episode Matt and special guest mariner Sebastian O'Brien (host of TENTPOLE TRAUMA) worry that they'll never find dry land without a helpful map/back tattoo of an arrow pointing up, so they bide their time on the trimaran by discussing 1997's WATERWORLD: CHILDREN OF LEVIATHAN #1. It needs to be said right up front, Sebastian is a big WATERWORLD fan - so if you've come here looking for non-stop dunking (nailed it!) on the movie then you might as well swim along to another podcast that is more suited to your anti-WATERWORLD agenda. Matt, on the other hand, is indifferent to WATERWORLD but he sure does love weird comics that star characters Kevin Costner has portrayed on the big screen.     The New Guardians #1 with Daniel G. Wilson

    On this super-sized episode Matt and special guest co-host Daniel G. Wilson try to figure out what the heck those little blue guys on Oa were thinking as they discuss 1988's THE NEW GUARDIANS #1. Do you like comics that use racial and cultural stereotypes as superpowers?  Well, then you are in luck... ...Matt, on the other hand, clumsily tries to navigate the landmines he set for himself because he's the one who chose the comic.  Ever the good sport, Daniel brings a high level of thoughtfulness, nuance, and sophistication to the discussion -- which are all things The New Guardians #1 lacks.  Matt's awkwardness aside, this turns out to be a great conversation about race and representation in comics. Also, both Daniel and Matt share their love for the writing of the great Dwayne McDuffie. Hopefully Matt didn't mention Nightman (but knowing him, he probably did).     The Comet #1 and Legend of the Shield #1 with Pat Casey

    On this episode Matt and returning guest co-host Pat Casey (screenwriter of VIOLENT NIGHT 1 & 2) strive to make an impression as they discuss the consequence of the launch of the Impact Universe with 1991's THE COMET #1 and LEGEND OF THE SHIELD #1. (Matt tried to use synonyms of "impact" and it made him sound like AI.  Never one to miss an opportunity to take the wrong lesson from something, Matt is now suspicious of synonyms) Both Pat and Matt have a lot of fondness for the Impact Universe, although Pat admits that his first encounter with it was less than pleasant.  Matt tries his darndest to stay on topic, but ends up rambling about weird Golden Age patriotic superheroes for a while. While Matt probably doesn't bring up Nightman, Pat does share a few non-spoiler details about the upcoming VIOLENT NIGHT 2 in theaters December 4, 2026!     Force Works #1 with Kevin Freeman

    On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Kevin Freeman (host of DOC'S COMICS and writer of SUBCULTURE) follow the holo-cursor to the com-center where they discuss 1994's FORCE WORKS #1. Probably most known for its cumbersome (but cool) fold-out cover and its unceremonious killing of Wonder Man, Force Works was pitched to audiences as a more relevant and proactive Avengers.  A team that would stop problems before they started.  It's an interesting premise, but was it executed well?  The short answer is no -- but when taking into account massively successful stories like AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED and CIVIL WAR, it's possible to make a case that Force Works was just ahead of its time. Of course, since this is Does This Come in Chromium, Matt doesn't spend a lot of time making that case.  Instead he pines for the day that AVENGERS: THE CROSSING gets its redemption arc.  TEENAGE TONY STARK WILL HAVE HIS DAY!
