🌑🕳️ THE PIT | FALLING TEACHES

What waits beneath the earth, beyond the reach of sunlight, where even the gods and spirits fear to wander? Tonight on Folklore & Flourish, we descend into the terrifying depths of world mythology, exploring the places where darkness conceals ancient monsters, forgotten souls, and truths that cannot be discovered from above. In the traditions of Lesotho, we encounter Ditaolane and Kammapa, the extraordinary tale of a monstrous creature that swallowed nearly the entire world. Vietnamese folklore brings us Thạch Sanh, the courageous hero whose encounter with a monstrous eagle leads him into a hidden underground realm. From Korea comes Princess Bari, the abandoned daughter who journeys beyond death itself in search of the life-giving waters that might save her parents. Finally, the Javanese legend of Bima and Dewa Ruci takes us beneath the ocean, where a warrior discovers that the greatest mysteries of existence may be hidden within the smallest and most unexpected places. Across these four traditions, descent is more than a journey into darkness. It is a confrontation with everything that seems impossible to overcome: abandonment, monstrous forces, death, and the limits of our own understanding. Some descend to rescue others, some to recover what has been lost, and others to discover knowledge that can only be earned through extraordinary trials. As our October journey through Witches & the Underworld continues, tonight's theme of Descent and lesson, Falling Teaches, invite us to consider whether the places we most fear entering might also hold something worth discovering. The darkness does not promise safety, and not everyone who enters emerges unchanged. Sometimes the only path forward leads down. 🔮🖤 #FolkloreAndFlourish #ThePit #FallingTeaches #WitchesAndTheUnderworld #WorldMythology #AfricanFolklore #VietnameseFolklore #KoreanMythology #JavaneseMythology #UnderworldMyths #OctoberFolklore

🌿🖤 THE BITTER GIFT | HEALING HAS TEETH

Healing has not always been imagined as something gentle. Across the world, ancient traditions have recognized that confronting illness, suffering, and harmful spiritual influences sometimes requires courage, struggle, and the willingness to face what frightens us. Tonight on Folklore & Flourish, we explore Dark Medicine, beginning with Aboriginal Australian traditions of the ngangkari, traditional healers whose practices address physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. In Māori tradition, we encounter mate atua, spiritual affliction, and the tohunga whose knowledge could help restore balance. Traveling to Finland, we discover the tietäjä, a powerful ritual specialist who confronted illness through sacred knowledge, incantations, and spiritual resistance. Finally, in Maldivian traditions, we explore vimburu, where ritual movement and performance become part of the struggle against affliction. These traditions invite us to consider a difficult truth: healing does not always begin with comfort. Sometimes it begins by recognizing what has been hidden, confronting what has been avoided, or acknowledging suffering that refuses to disappear. Although these cultural practices carry their own distinct histories and meanings, they remind us that humanity has long searched for ways to understand pain beyond what the eye can see. As we continue our October journey through The Spells, tonight's lesson, Healing Has Teeth, asks us to consider the strength required to face our deepest fears rather than surrendering to them. Not every wound is visible, not every remedy is painless, and not every battle is fought with a weapon. 🌙✨ #FolkloreAndFlourish #TheBitterGift #DarkMedicine #HealingHasTeeth #WitchesAndTheUnderworld #WorldFolklore #TraditionalHealing #OctoberFolklore #FolklorePodcast

🕯️🔮 THE HEX | CURSES, CHARMS & THE SHADOW OF POWER

Across centuries and cultures, people have believed that words, objects, and intentions could carry powers capable of protecting, blessing, or destroying another life. Tonight on Folklore & Flourish, we venture into the darker corners of magic, where the boundary between protection and harm becomes dangerously thin. In Haiti, we explore the pwen, spiritual power associated with Haitian Vodou and its complex relationship with protection and influence. Iceland introduces the legendary Egill Skallagrímsson, whose curse against King Eiríkr and Queen Gunnhildr reveals the feared power of words and runic magic. In Paraguay, we encounter the payé, a charm believed capable of bringing fortune or misfortune, while Croatian traditions surrounding uroci reveal the enduring fear of curses carried through envy, words, and the evil eye. Yet beneath these unsettling traditions lies something deeply human: our desire to influence circumstances that frighten us, threaten us, or escape our understanding. A charm created for protection may become an instrument of control, just as words spoken in anger may leave wounds long after their speaker has forgotten them. As we continue our October journey through The Spells, tonight's theme of Shadow Power reminds us that possessing influence and exercising wisdom are not necessarily the same. Sometimes the greatest demonstration of power is knowing when not to use it. 🌑✨ #FolkloreAndFlourish #TheHex #WitchesAndTheUnderworld #HaitianVodou #IcelandicFolklore #ParaguayanFolklore #CroatianFolklore #CursesAndCharms #WorldFolklore #OctoberFolklore

🔮✨ THE SIGHT | ANCIENT ORACLES & GLIMPSES BEYOND TIME

For thousands of years, humanity has sought ways to glimpse what lies beyond the present, turning to sacred waters, prophetic visions, and those believed capable of seeing what ordinary eyes cannot. Tonight on Folklore & Flourish, we explore the mysterious world of divination, beginning with Greece's Pythia of Delphi, whose prophetic words carried the authority of Apollo. In Wales, the legendary Ffynnon Gybi connects sacred waters with answers and omens, while Hungarian folklore introduces the Táltos, extraordinary individuals believed to possess spiritual gifts from birth. In Mongolia, traditions surrounding the toli, or shamanic mirrors, reveal another fascinating relationship between reflection, spiritual perception, and the unseen world. But the ability to see beyond the ordinary has rarely promised certainty. Prophecies can be misunderstood, visions interpreted through fear, and answers discovered only after events have already unfolded. Across these traditions, divination reminds us that wisdom may lie not simply in glimpsing the future, but in understanding what we are being shown. Tonight, as we continue October's The Spells, we explore The Sight, where time, intuition, and mystery intertwine around one haunting question: What am I meant to see? 🌙👁️ #FolkloreAndFlourish #TheSight #Divination #PythiaOfDelphi #WelshFolklore #Taltos #MongolianShamanism #AncientOracles #WorldFolklore #OctoberFolklore #WitchesAndTheUnderworld

🌿🔮 THE HERBS | ANCIENT HEALERS & THE MAGIC OF NATURE

Long before modern medicine, humanity turned to the earth for healing, discovering that the smallest leaves, roots, and flowers could hold extraordinary possibilities. Tonight on Folklore & Flourish, we explore the relationship between plants, spirituality, and the traditions that preserved their wisdom. In ancient Greece, Circe and the Pharmakides of Aiaia reveal the mysterious intersection of herbal knowledge, enchantment, and transformation. Chinese tradition introduces Shennong, the Divine Farmer who tested countless herbs to understand their properties, while the Shipibo-Konibo of the Peruvian Amazon preserve traditions of learning from plants through sacred diets and spiritual teachings. Finally, Austria's Kräuterbuschen celebrates the gathering and blessing of healing herbs around the Feast of the Assumption. Across these traditions, plants become more than ingredients or remedies. They are teachers, symbols of protection, and reminders of humanity's enduring relationship with the natural world. Yet their stories also reveal that healing requires knowledge, patience, and respect, for the same plant that offers comfort may carry danger when misunderstood. Tonight, as we continue October's The Spells, we enter The Herbs, exploring the wisdom rooted in the earth and reflecting upon one deeply personal question: What heals me? 🍃✨ #FolkloreAndFlourish #TheHerbs #HealingMagic #Circe #Shennong #ShipiboKonibo #Kräuterbuschen #HerbalFolklore #WorldFolklore #OctoberFolklore #WitchesAndTheUnderworld

📖🔮 THE BOOK | SECRETS HIDDEN BETWEEN THE PAGES

Throughout history, books have been more than collections of words. They have served as vessels of sacred wisdom, guarded mysteries, and knowledge believed too powerful for ordinary hands. Tonight on Folklore & Flourish, we venture into the world of forbidden knowledge, beginning with ancient Egypt's Book of Thoth, whose legendary secrets promised extraordinary understanding. From Ethiopia's Talismans, which concealed sacred names and protective prayers, to China's Wufuxu, a Daoist scripture associated with five powerful talismans, we discover how written words became instruments of spiritual protection and transformation. Finally, Jewish mystical tradition introduces the Sefer Raziel, a legendary book containing angelic wisdom and the secrets of creation. Yet what makes knowledge forbidden? Is it the danger of what might be discovered, the responsibility that comes with understanding, or the fear of those who would rather keep certain truths concealed? Across these traditions, books become gateways between the human and divine, preserving mysteries that generations have sought to uncover. Tonight, as we continue October's The Spells, we explore The Book, where every page holds the possibility of revelation and one question lingers beneath the ink: What secret calls me? 🌙✨ #FolkloreAndFlourish #TheBook #ForbiddenKnowledge #BookOfThoth #SeferRaziel #DaoistTraditions #EthiopianFolklore #AncientMysteries #WorldFolklore #OctoberFolklore
