Respiratory Physiology and Mechanical Ventilation with Dr. Laurent Brochard

Episode #44. In this episode, we explore advanced respiratory physiology, mechanical ventilation strategies, and innovative techniques like CO2 removal and PFO detection, featuring insights from Dr. Laurent Brochard and expert hosts. Laurent Brochard, MD, HDR Dr. Laurent Brochard is an internationally renowned critical care physician, clinical scientist, and a global leader in mechanical ventilation and acute respiratory failure. He serves as an Intensivist in the Critical Care Department at St. Michael’s Hospital and is a Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto, where he previously held the Keenan Chair in Medical Research. A pioneer in translational physiological research, Dr. Brochard’s seminal work has fundamentally shaped modern intensive care practice. His early landmark clinical trials established noninvasive ventilation (NIV) as a life-saving standard of care in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and acute pulmonary edema. Across his career, his research has driven critical advancements in lung-protective ventilation, the pathophysiology and mitigation of patient-self-inflicted lung injury (P-SILI), patient-ventilator dysynchrony, advanced respiratory monitoring, and physiological approaches to ventilator liberation. Dr. Brochard is an extensively cited investigator with more than 600 peer-reviewed publications. He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Intensive Care Medicine and is a co-founder of the international research collaborative PLUG (Pleural Pressure Working Group). A dedicated educator and mentor, he has trained generations of intensive care specialists and clinician-scientists worldwide.
