The Secret to Becoming a Better Storyteller

Study the Stories That Move You When you understand how stories actually work, you suddenly have access to one of the most powerful tools on earth. Stories can move people to action, inspire transformation, and change a person’s life. In this Ideas Love Community pep talk, Jacquelyn breaks down one of the most important practices for anyone who wants to become a better speaker, writer, author, or storyteller: consume stories on purpose. ____In This Episode൦ Why becoming a better storyteller starts with intentionally consuming great stories.൦ How writers use the music of language to create emotion and tension.൦ Why action, sensory details, dialogue, and specific details make stories more memorable.൦ How speakers can use repeated phrases or “wayfinding signs” to help an audience remember the message.൦ What bestselling and award-winning books can teach about powerful openings.൦ How studying great speeches can reveal strategic pauses, movement, language, and delivery.൦ Why storytelling is one of the most powerful ways people connect, teach, heal, and create community.____Storytelling With Love and CommunityFor Jacquelyn, storytelling isn't simply about becoming more persuasive or entertaining.Stories are how people connect. They teach. They create understanding. They help people bond and heal. And because stories can also be used to harm, she challenges storytellers to use their voices to express their ideas strategically, with love, and for community. The world needs more stories about positive human behavior, overcoming challenges and building something better.____ If this conversation sparks an idea, a question, an ask, or a conversation you know you need to have, that's the point. Ideas don't change the world alone. Ideas love community. Ideas Love Community is hosted by Jacquelyn Fletcher Johnson, founder of The Gateway Project, where people with powerful ideas build their voices, thought-leadership platforms, and the relationships that can help those ideas reach bigger rooms. Jacquelyn is a global speaker, executive coach, author, conference designer, and “speaker whisperer” whose mission is to activate the voice of soul in the world. Your Idea Has Been Done Before. Your Story Hasn’t.

You have an idea you can’t stop thinking about. There’s just one problem: Someone else has already talked about it. And now you’re wondering what you could possibly add to the conversation. Here’s what I want you to know: Your topic doesn’t have to be new. Your version of the human story does. As a conference designer, former editor-in-chief, and someone who has listened to thousands of pitches, I can tell you that I’m often pitched essentially the same idea by multiple people. What makes you stand out isn’t that you’ve discovered a subject no one else has ever considered. It’s your point of view. Your unique stories. Your strange combination of experience that have shaped how you see the world. In this Pep Talk, we’re talking about how to find those details and why they matter if you want to write, speak, build a thought-leadership platform, or get your ideas into bigger rooms. I also tell the story of one of the toughest audiences I’ve ever faced. I came armed with research, data, expert stories, and all the things I thought would establish my credibility. It didn’t work. The audience wasn’t impressed. So I changed course and told them a vulnerable story from my own life. Instantly, the people who had been sitting with their arms crossed judging my every move, leaned forward. Choosing the stories you tell is a strategic decision that can help your audience understand something, trust something, question something, or change something.   IN THIS EPISODE If you’ve come across someone else’s version of what you want to say, this episode is for you. What do you see that other people don’t? What do you disagree with? What are you scared to say out loud? What happened in your life that made this idea matter to you in the first place? That’s where I’d look. Because the more specifically you become yourself, the harder you are to duplicate. What are the stories that only you can tell? The stories you have to tell? It’s time to tell them because ideas don’t change the world alone. Ideas love community.   If this conversation sparks an idea, a question, an ask, or a conversation you know you need to have, that's the point. Ideas don't change the world alone. Amy Gallo on Conflict, Courage & Using Your Voice

Using your voice is easy when everyone agrees with you. The real test is what happens when they don’t.Bestselling author and workplace expert Amy Gallo has spent years studying what happens when relationships get difficult. And it turns out conflict isn't necessarily the problem.Sometimes, not having enough of it is.In this episode of Ideas Love Community, Amy joins Jacquelyn Fletcher Johnson for a wide-ranging conversation about what it really takes to speak up, ask for help, disagree productively, repair relationships when we get it wrong, and keep using our voices when things get uncomfortable.Amy shares why some organizations suffer from artificial harmony where everyone appears to agree in the meeting, while the real conversation happens afterward. They also explore another idea at the heart of this podcast:No one is truly self-made.Behind our careers, ideas, opportunities, books, businesses, and breakthroughs are people who challenged us, encouraged us, introduced us, disagreed with us, opened doors, and helped us see something we couldn't see on our own. That's why asking matters. That's why conflict matters. And that's why ideas love community.Amy and Jacquelyn explore the connection between conflict and voice: how to say what needs to be said without losing connection, how to recover when you don't handle a conversation perfectly, and why the risk of staying silent deserves just as much consideration as the risk of speaking up.Because getting your voice into the world isn't only about stepping onto a stage.Sometimes it's raising your hand.Making the ask.Saying no.Disagreeing with someone you respect.Admitting you got it wrong.Or saying the thing nobody else in the room is willing to say. _____ IN THIS EPISODEYou'll hear Amy and Jacquelyn explore:• Why using your voice gets harder when the stakes get higher• Why asking for help is a skill and how to get better at it• What the “self-made” story gets wrong about success• Why big ideas need other people to become better• How Amy became one of the leading voices on workplace conflict• Why some teams suffer from too little conflict, not too much• What “artificial harmony” looks like inside organizations• How to disagree without destroying connection• What to do when you lose your cool or say something you regret• How to repair mistakes and rebuild trust• The cost of speaking up—and the often-overlooked cost of staying silent• Why productive disagreement can make our relationships, teams, and ideas stronger _____ ABOUT AMY GALLOAmy Gallo is a workplace expert, bestselling author, speaker, and leading voice on conflict, communication, and interpersonal dynamics at work. She is the author of Getting Along: How to Work with Anyone (Even Difficult People) and the HBR Guide to Dealing with Conflict, as well as hundreds of articles for Harvard Business Review. From 2019 to 2025, Amy co-hosted HBR's Women at Work podcast, exploring the challenges and opportunities women encounter in the workplace. You Have a Story to Tell

YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED You have no idea how good you are. You may not see the impact your voice, your ideas, and your stories can have on other people. You may be afraid to use your voice because you know there can be real consequences to putting yourself out into the world. But staying silent has a cost, too. Jacquelyn reflects on the cultural pull toward rugged individualism, bootstrapping, and fierce independence. But humans need community. We thrive when we are connected to other people, their ideas, their stories, and their love.  YOUR STORY CAN CHANGE SOMEONE Think about the stories other people have told you that changed how you live, lead, work, or see the world. Your story can do the same for someone else. You don't have to begin on a stage in front of 2,000 people. Start with one person. Tell the story in a meeting. Share it with someone you trust. Write it down. Give yourself permission to be imperfect. The story doesn't have to be polished to be powerful. It needs truth. It needs heart. It needs love. A LITTLE CRACK IN THE WINDOW Jacquelyn encourages listeners to put aside their fear and their need to be perfect, even if only for a moment. If you have a story to tell, or feel like there is something bigger you're supposed to be doing, tune in to free your voice, step into courage, and tell the stories you were put her to tell.  THE QUESTION What stories do you HAVE to tell? Ideas love community, and we need yours. If this conversation sparks an idea, a question, an ask, or a conversation you know you need to have, that's the point. Ideas don't change the world alone. How to Receive Feedback Without Taking It Personally

Have you ever gotten feedback on something you really, really cared about and immediately felt defensive? Jacquelyn Fletcher Johnson has. In this episode of Ideas Love Community, Jacque gets honest about her own history with perfectionism, judgment, and the feeling that criticism of her work somehow meant something about her as a person. She shares how she has worked to change that response, and why learning to receive feedback is such an important skill for anyone putting an idea, story, book, speech, business, or creative work out into the world. It’s a simple idea with profound ripple effects into everything you put into the world: The feedback is about the idea. It is not about your worth._____ For the Speakers, Writers & Big-Idea People For anyone putting their voice into the world, feedback is part of the journey.Jacquelyn's role as a "trail angel" is not to harm the spirit of the artist. It's to help people tell the stories they were born to tell. That means sometimes the most helpful thing a person can receive isn't applause. It's honest feedback that helps the idea become clearer, stronger, and more powerful._____ The Idea to Carry Forward The next time defensiveness shows up, Jacquelyn invites you to pause. Take a breath. Get curious. Listen. There may be gold in there. And even when the feedback is difficult, one thing remains true: Your idea can be criticized. Your value as a human is non-negotiable. Ideas love community. It’s time to share yours._____  If this conversation sparks an idea, a question, an ask, or a conversation you know you need to have, that's the point. Healing Your Voice: The Courage to Share the Story Only You Can Tell

Your voice doesn't have to be perfect. It needs to be yours. In this Pep Talk, Jacquelyn Fletcher Johnson explores what it means to heal, activate, and amplify your voice.  It takes courage to express what is uniquely yours. But that doesn't mean you need to chase a giant platform or prove your worth on a stage. Expression can happen between you and your journal. Between you and someone you love. Between you and a small community of people who need what you have to share. Because stories are medicine.  Key Takeaways Stop trying to be someone else.  Your voice has been shaped by the one-of-a-kind experiences of your life. Comparison pulls you away from the very thing that makes your expression yours. Expression doesn't require an audience. A journal entry, a conversation with a trusted friend, a voice memo, or three minutes of writing counts. Not every story belongs on a stage. Using your voice is a choice. You get to decide which stories you tell, when you tell them, and where. The important thing is to make that choice intentionally rather than allowing fear to make it for you. The answers come in the creating. You don't have to figure everything out before you begin. Writing, speaking, making, and experimenting can reveal what you're trying to say. Stories are medicine. Words can heal. Expression can be a balm to the soul. The story you have lived may become something another person needs. Your stories aren't meant for everyone. But they are meant for someone.  Enjoying the Ideas Love Community Podcast? If this episode encouraged you, please: Follow the podcast. Leave a rating and review.
