It’s A Small World!

Tanya Louise and Mich Smith

A Small World is a conversational podcast exploring alternative ways of thinking about life, the universe, and everything in between. Through open discussion, curiosity, and questioning accepted narratives, we explore beliefs, conspiracy theories, the power of the mind, the paranormal and the ideas that sit just outside the mainstream - not to convince, but to consider. It’s a space for people who enjoy thinking differently, asking bigger questions, and acknowledging that the world may be smaller, stranger, and more connected than we’re often led to believe.

Women & the Paranormal: Mediums, Mysteries and the Sixth Sense

Why have women been so closely connected to the supernatural throughout history? From Victorian mediums and spiritualists to ghost hunters, psychics and the mysterious idea of women's intuition, this week on It's A Small World! we're exploring the fascinating relationship between women and the paranormal. Following last week's discussion about witch trials, we're turning the tables. For centuries, women were feared and punished for supposedly possessing supernatural powers. Yet others went on to become celebrated mediums, investigators and influential figures in the world of spiritualism. We explore the Fox sisters and the rise of Victorian spiritualism, famous female paranormal investigators, and why so many traditional ghost stories centre around women. And what about that famous women's intuition? Is it a genuine sixth sense, an ability to recognise things subconsciously, or simply a series of remarkable coincidences? We also ask whether grief makes us more open to paranormal experiences, why people sometimes sense the presence of loved ones who've died, and whether it's possible to be a sceptic while still hoping there's something more. Are some people genuinely able to communicate with the dead? Or does the real mystery lie in the extraordinary workings of the human mind? Whether you're a believer, a sceptic or somewhere in between, join Tanya and Mich for another curious conversation about the unexplained. It's A Small World!  - exploring the curious, the unusual and everything that makes us human.

Witch Trials: Fear, Power & The Women We Punished

Forget the pointy hats, broomsticks and bubbling cauldrons. The real history of witch trials is far more disturbing. This week on It's A Small World!, we're exploring the dark history of witch hunts, the women (and men) accused of witchcraft, and what happens when fear, suspicion and power take hold of a community. And this time, we're doing things a little differently. Witch trials are very much Mich's area of expertise, so Tanya is asking the questions while Mich takes us through the history, the myths and the uncomfortable truths. Why were women so often accused of witchcraft? Were independent women, healers and those with knowledge really seen as a threat? How could a rumour turn into an accusation, a trial and sometimes an execution? We explore the role of religion, superstition, gender, social expectations and moral panic, asking why certain people became outsiders simply because they were different. But we're not stopping in the past. Have witch hunts really disappeared, or have we simply changed the way we identify and punish outsiders? From historical accusations to modern-day social media pile-ons, we discuss the psychology of fear, the power of rumours and what happens when society decides someone doesn't belong. It's a conversation about witches, but perhaps even more importantly, it's about human nature. Because the most unsettling question might not be why people believed in witches hundreds of years ago. It might be who we'd accuse today. It's A Small World!  - curious conversations about people, life and the world around us.
