    When You Stop Running

💚 THE GREEN SPACE PODCAST WITH GARON GREEN REAL CONVERSATIONS • REAL STORIES • REAL HOPE 🎙️ GUEST: MARK BLACKNELL A US Marine. A Teamster. PTSD. Alcohol. Depression. Jail. And eventually… a wall. Mark Blacknell’s journey to Zen meditation is probably not the story you’re expecting. For around two decades, Mark describes a life far removed from peace and stillness PTSD, anxiety, depression, alcohol, instability, divorce, numerous moves, different jobs, encounters with the law and two short periods in jail. He served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a Teamster. Eventually, his journey took him into treatment through the VA. Then something began to change. Mark discovered meditation and Zen — and eventually found meaning in one of the simplest practices imaginable: “Sit down. Be still. Stare at the wall.” Today, Mark is an ordained and Lay Entrusted Zen meditation guide whose practice has roots in Soto Zen. But this conversation isn’t about pretending meditation magically fixes everything. It’s about what can happen when, after years of running, fighting and surviving, we finally become willing to sit with ourselves. Mark and I explore: 💚 PTSD, anxiety and depression💚 Alcohol and difficult periods of life💚 His experience as a US Marine💚 Treatment through the VA💚 Meditation and Zen practice💚 Sitting with discomfort💚 Acceptance and personal responsibility💚 What “staring at the wall” really means💚 Finding a different relationship with ourselves 📚 MARK BLACKNELL 📖 Just Stare at the Wall!📖 Living the Universe from Where You Sit 🌐 Websitehttps://stareatthewall.org/ 💼 LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-blacknell 🎵 TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@stareatthewallwithmark ▶️ YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/@stareatthewallwithmark 💚 LISTEN TO THE GREEN SPACE 🎧 Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/0U7R8A5AfND8lVygyv3dvZ 🍎 Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-green-space-podcast-with-garon-green/id1868819247 ⚠️ DISCLAIMER The Green Space is an educational and conversational podcast for general information and personal reflection. Episode 16 The Mind On Overload

The Green Room Podcast with Garon Green Episode 16 - THE MIND ON OVERLOAD Anxiety, Overthinking & Finding Your Way Back to Yourself In this episode, I’m joined by Brian Sachetta, author andfounder of Get Out of Your Head, for a deeply humanconversation about anxiety, overthinking, depression, intrusive thoughts, uncertainty, self-criticism and what can happen when the mind simply feels overloaded. As a counsellor, I wanted this conversation to go beyond simply talking about symptoms or techniques. We explore the person behind the anxiety, the patterns we develop, the beliefs we carry, and why our minds can become trapped in“what if?” thinking, and how fear can sometimes keep us searching for certaintythat life simply cannot provide. Brian shares his own experiences with anxiety and depression, the story behind his books Get Out of Your Head: A Toolkit for Living with and Overcoming Anxiety and Get Out of Your Head Vol. 2: Navigating the Abyss of Depression, and how his background in computer sciencehelped him think differently about mental overload. Throughout the conversation, we explore questions such as: When does thinking become overthinking? What might anxiety be trying to protect us from? How do we recognise old patterns without automatically following them? Can we learn to tolerate uncertainty rather than constantly trying toeliminate it? How do we become more compassionate towards ourselves? And who are we underneath the labels, anxiety and expectations wecarry? One of the central messages of this episode is simple: You don’t have to solve every thought that enters your mind. Sometimes healing begins by becoming curious about what is happening insideus rather than immediately judging ourselves for feeling it. Episode 15: Life After Loss

LIFE AFTER LOSS Doug Lawrence on Grief, Love & Finding aWay Forward What happens when somebody deeply woven into our life is suddenly no longer physically there? In this deeply human conversation, Garon Green sits down with author and International Certified Mentor Doug Lawrence to explore grief, love, identity, loneliness, PTSD, mentoring, vulnerability and what life can look like after profound loss. This isn’t a conversation about telling somebody how they should grieve. It’s about listening. Remembering. Connection. Love. And what it might mean to continue living while still carrying somebody who mattered enormously. Doug also discusses the ideas and experiences behind his books: The Gift ofMentoring You Are NotAlone and: Grief: TheSilent Pandemic CONNECT WITH DOUG LAWRENCE TalentC: https://www.talentc.ca LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/douglawrence-mentor Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/doug.lawrence.1610/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCE4YC1GkfHrQtFYgYrf8baQ X: @DougLawrenceJM Email: doug.lawrence@talentc.ca TalentCcontact: +1 306 537 6759 Calendly: https://calendly.com/doug-lawrence Doug’s books The Gift ofMentoring You Are NotAlone Grief: TheSilent Pandemic THE GREEN ROOM PODCAST Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0U7R8A5AfND8lVygyv3dvZ Instagram: @thegreenroompodcast1 TikTok: @the.green.room.po YouTube: @thegreenroompodcast101 ApplePodcasts: Search The Green Room Podcast — Garon Green   Music   Throat - I Talk (741 Hz) Music licensed through Soundstripe. Please take care of yourself while listening and seek appropriate support if something discussed feels difficult to manage alone. FINAL THOUGHT ON GRIEF Before we close I want to leave you with one final thought. Dr Elisabeth Kübler-Ross changed the way the world talkedabout death, dying and grief. Many people know her work through the five stages: denial... anger... bargaining... depression... and acceptance. But perhaps one of the most important things to understandis that grief was never meant to be a neat staircase. You don't complete denial and graduate to anger. You don't reach acceptance and suddenly stop missingsomebody. Grief can move backwards. Sideways. It can disappear into the background for months... and return because of a song, a smell, a birthday, an emptychair - or simply because, for one second, you forgot they were gone. And perhaps that's because grief isn't evidence thatsomething has gone wrong with you. Grief is evidence that somebody mattered. The person may no longer walk beside you in the way theyonce did... but the love, the memories, the lessons, the laughter - andthe parts of you that were changed because they existed - can remain. So maybe healing isn't about reaching the final stage andclosing the door. Maybe it's learning how to carry both things: the pain of losing them... and the privilege of having loved them. And if you're listening tonight and wondering why you'restill grieving... please don't measure your love against somebody else'stimetable. There is no stopwatch on grief. There is no deadline on missing somebody. And there is no shame in saying: “They mattered to me. They still matter tome. And I’m learning howto carry their absence while continuing to live.” Because moving forward doesn't have to mean leaving somebody behind. Sometimes... we carry them forwardwith us. And perhaps that is one of the quietest forms love takesafter loss.

Episode 13 The Stories That Save Us

The Green Room Podcast: David Deane Haskell: The Stories That Save Us Shame, addiction, and the stories we tell ourselves can keep us trapped for decades until one honest conversation begins to crack everything open. In this deeply human episode of The Green Room Podcast, Garon Green sits down with author, drummer and recovering addict David Deane Haskell to explore the long and often painful road from trauma and addiction towards healing, self-awareness and acceptance. David shares openly about growing up feeling lonely and misunderstood, carrying other people’s beliefs as his own, and becoming trapped in cycles of addiction, isolation and shame. He speaks about the fear of failure, living as a hermit for 11 years, and the difficult realisation that healing cannot happen by simply pretending that everything is fine. Together, Garon and David explore: • Why shame can be more destructive than guilt • How inner-child work can help us recognise whose voice we are really hearing • The difference between toxic positivity and genuine hope • Why addiction can be just as confusing for the person experiencing it as it is for those watching from the outside • The importance of boundaries and self-awareness • How small, consistent acts of recovery can create lasting change • Masculinity, vulnerability and learning to ask for help • Relapse, identity and the complicated journey of recovery • What it means to stop performing a version of yourself and begin becoming who you really are. Garon brings his own lived experience of addiction and his professional experience working within addiction and mental health into the conversation, creating an honest and compassionate space where neither recovery nor healing is presented as a straight line. The conversation also explores David's creative life in Japan, his memoir Wounded Angels, his work as a science-fiction writer, and how imagination and spirituality can sometimes help us find meaning within experiences of pain, trauma and possibility. At its heart, this is a conversation about shame, identity, addiction, healing and becoming whole. If you've ever felt that you've spent years performing a version of yourself to survive, this episode may speak directly to you. Listen. Reflect. And perhaps ask yourself: whose story am I actually living?
