    025 | June Book Club

In this episode of Refining Our Focus in Motherhood, we continue our discussion through The Life-Giving Home with the June chapter, Times of Delight. This chapter reminded us that play is not something extra we add once all the work is done. Delight, laughter, creativity, and wonder are part of a full and beautiful life. As mothers, we can become so focused on responsibility that we forget to notice the simple joys right in front of us. We talk about the value of boredom, the beauty of childlike wonder, the way play supports learning, and how delight can change the atmosphere of a home. We also discuss how children naturally notice puddles, bugs, clouds, sticks, rocks, and all the little things we often overlook. This episode is an invitation to slow down, notice more, and make room for simple moments of joy with our children. Main Points Discussed 1. Delight is not extra As mothers, we often think delight can wait until the house is clean, the schedule is calm, and everything else is done. But joy and play are not extras. They are part of a life-giving home. 2. Children are natural teachers of wonder Children notice the things we often miss. They are amazed by puddles, rocks, bugs, clouds, sticks, and tiny discoveries. Their curiosity reminds us to see the world with softer, more open eyes. 3. Boredom can lead to creativity We discussed the idea that children need space to be bored so they can begin creating their own fun. Instead of rushing to entertain them, we can give them time to discover, imagine, and play. A helpful phrase mentioned in the episode was: “I trust that you’ll find something to do.” 4. Play is connected to learning When children enjoy what they are learning, it becomes meaningful to them. Play allows children to practice courage, goodness, creativity, problem-solving, and connection in a natural way. 5. Mothers need play too Play is not only for children. As adults, we still need delight. It may look like dancing in the kitchen, gardening, painting, laughing with our children, going outside barefoot, or noticing something beautiful together. 6. Delight helps us notice God Childlike belief and wonder can help us see God’s hand in ordinary moments. Sometimes delight is one of the ways He refreshes our hearts, our families, and our homes. Listener Challenge This week, choose one small moment each day to step into wonder or play with your children. It could be: Watching the clouds and looking for shapes Going outside barefoot Noticing birds, bugs, flowers, or trees Taking a family walk Joining a game instead of only watching Turning on music while cleaning the kitchen Laughing over something small Letting your child show you what delights them At the end of the day, ask yourself: What delighted me today? What delighted my children? Did I make room for joy, or only responsibility? Sometimes the most life-giving things are not the grand things, but the joyful little things. Maybe play is not escaping life. Maybe it helps us remember what life is for.   Links Mentioned in This Episode: The Life-Giving Home by Sally and Sarah Clarkson This is the book we are reading through in our monthly book club discussion. The June chapter is Times of Delight: Creating a Value for Play.  Homeschooling: You’re Doing It Right Just by Doing It by Ginny Yurich We mentioned this book during our conversation about boredom, imagination, screen time, and giving children space to create their own play.

024 | Creating a Home Our Kids Want to Return To Part 3: Remember the Long View

In this final episode of our three-part series, Creating a Home Our Kids Want to Return To, we are stepping back and remembering the long view of motherhood. So often, motherhood can feel like the moment right in front of us. The spilled drink. The hard attitude. The sibling conflict. The child who needs us again when we already feel stretched thin. But motherhood is not only about getting through today. We are not just raising children. We are raising future adults, future husbands and wives, future mothers and fathers, and future families. When we remember that, it can change the way we respond. Control may feel easier in the moment. It may even stop a behavior quickly. But connection, steadiness, and emotional safety are what form something lasting in the hearts of our children. In this episode, we talk about how the long view helps us slow down, invite the Spirit, and see our children not only as they are today, but as they are becoming. We also reflect on how our example in motherhood, marriage, repentance, regulation, and grace can bless generations beyond what we can see right now. This is slow work. It is holy work. And it matters. In This Episode, We Talk About: Why we are not just raising kids, but future adults How remembering who our children are becoming can change the way we respond Why connection matters more than control How our example can shape future marriages and families The importance of regulating ourselves before reacting How scripture, prayer, and the Spirit help us see the long view Why small, unseen moments in motherhood matter more than we often realize How this three-part series fits together: connection, emotional safety, and the long view A Gentle Invitation for This Week Choose one moment each day to pause before you respond. Take a breath. Soften your shoulders. Remember the long view. Then ask yourself: “What does this moment teach my child about love, safety, and belonging?” It does not have to be perfect. It only has to be practiced. Resources Mentioned For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay Charlotte Mason’s reminder that children are persons President Henry B. Eyring’s story about remembering the future man inside the child Closing Encouragement You are cultivating something beautiful, even on the days that feel messy or ordinary. You are shaping hearts. You are building future homes. You are creating a place your children will want to return to. And that is legacy. That is truthfulness. That is motherhood refined.
