In this new Joann Butler In Studio With..., the incomparable Harry Connick, Jr. says his latest passion project Babe: Elaboratio was a long time coming, inspired by his mother and the dream she had for him to one day perform at Carnegie Hall. After losing her to ovarian cancer when he was just 13, Connick decided he would wait for a truly special reason to enter the iconic New York City venue, after decades of turning down opportunities to perform there. That moment finally came on May 22 of this year, what would have been his mother’s 100th birthday, when he performed music written just for her. “I remember being very emotional during the performance,” he says. The project also includes a companion book, which Connick wrote alongside the music, and a large-scale recording featuring a full orchestra of 70+ musicians from Orchestra Victoria and the Harry Connick, Jr. Big Band. For Connick, the tribute reaches beyond his own family. “This is about women. This is about mothers and how infinitely powerful that is,” he tells Butler. Babe: Elaboratio – A Tribute to My Mother is out now digitally and on CD, along with Connick’s debut book of the same name. The vinyl edition of the album arrives November 13. Music has been central to Connick’s life from the beginning. Growing up in New Orleans, he was already deeply immersed in piano as a child, eventually studying with legendary musician James Booker and developing the voice that would become just as recognizable as his playing. That long musical journey would later stretch into everything from four Christmas albums to one of his most enduring pop-culture moments, When Harry Met Sally... Connick credits director Rob Reiner with giving him an early break on the film, calling the opportunity “one of the greatest strokes of luck” of his career.     Matt Sorum Talks Sound & Vision Live Charity Vinyl With Paul Rodgers and Geezer Butler

But these days, the drummer is just as focused on giving back, staying creative and making sure the next generation gets the same access to music that helped shape his own life. In a new interview on Joann Butler In Studio With..., Sorum talks about the inaugural Palm Springs Sound & Vision Awards, a benefit tied to his Adopt the Arts foundation. The event honored vocalist Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company) and Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, and brought together an all-star lineup including Nuno Bettencourt, Steve Stevens, Corey Taylor and Lzzy Hale. The performances were captured for Sound & Vision Live, a limited-edition double-vinyl album produced by Sorum, which is limited to 2,000 copies. The album is available for pre-order through Experience Vinyl. The collector’s release directly benefits Adopt the Arts, which he co-founded with actress Jane Lynch in 2010. Sorum also looks back on the very different worlds of The Cult, Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver. His work with Guns N’ Roses helped earn him induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and he later found another major chapter with Velvet Revolver. He remembers the band as a particularly exciting rebirth and credits Scott Weiland with helping inspire its style and evolution. “Scott was just such a gem of a frontman,” Sorum says, calling him one of the best. The group’s success, including a number-one album and a Grammy win, remains one of the highlights of his career. And what if Guns N’ Roses called and asked him to come back? “I don’t know. I changed my phone number,” Sorum jokes when Butler asks him. He also weighs in on rock music today, saying the genre needs another true “cultural shift” like the one that happened when Nirvana arrived. His advice to younger musicians is to stop worrying about what sounds “modern” and concentrate on making the music they actually want to make — and writing great songs. Away from the stage, becoming a father at 60 has given Sorum a whole new perspective. He calls having his daughter “the greatest decision I ever made,” saying she inspired him to get healthier, take better care of himself and want to live a longer life. And after everything he’s experienced, Sorum says he wouldn’t change much. His advice to his younger self: “Do it exactly the way you did it, because you’re supposed to be right where you are right now.” This is a LifeMinute with Matt Sorum.

    John C. Adams Turns Plato’s Republic Into a Modern-Day Thriller Novel, The Third Phase

Adams is taking on a very different kind of challenge: turning one of philosophy’s most famous works into a modern-day thriller novel. In The Third Phase, Adams draws inspiration from Plato’s Republic and Augustine’s Confessions, wrapping philosophical and spiritual questions inside a globe-spanning story filled with spies, assassins, kidnappings, tank battles and disrupted constitutional conventions. The idea came from his three grown daughters, who encouraged him to approach Plato the same way he once approached big ideas as a youth pastor — translating them into stories that younger audiences could understand. “Do what you used to do in the youth group, Dad,” he recalls them telling him. At the center of the novel is a world-famous soccer player from Bolivia who joins a multicultural team determined to use his influence — and technology — to change the way society works. Their efforts quickly put them at odds with powerful political and institutional forces. But Adams says the action is only one layer of the story. The book explores political polarization and the influence of lobbying, while digging deeper into the philosophical tension between Platonism and nihilism. Its most important theme, he says, is ultimately spiritual. “My book is really Augustine’s answers to Plato’s questions,” Adams explains. “It’s a glimpse of how the world could be and a view of the kind of people we need to be in our heart and soul to bring that world about.” The Third Phase is available on Amazon, as an audiobook and through most bookstores. In a new Joann Butler In Studio With… interview, the Scandal singer looks back on everything, from opening for Andy Kaufman at 15 to growing up with a mom who managed New York City clubs — and literally ran away to the circus as a teen. Then there’s “Goodbye to You.” Smyth says she helped finish the song and believes she wrote the bridge but didn’t realize at the time that it counted as songwriting. “I still feel like I have to set the record straight,” she says. She also credits MTV with helping Scandal break through during an era when women in rock were often fighting for the same tiny slice of radio airplay. And yes, the Eddie Van Halen story is true. Smyth says he asked her to step in after David Lee Roth left Van Halen, but she was eight months pregnant and said no. Sammy Hagar came next. Looking back, Smyth says she wishes she and Eddie had at least made a record together. She also gets real about husband John McEnroe — tennis legend and musician — joking that despite his famous temper, she’s actually the hothead in the relationship. After more than three decades together, Smyth says he’s still the one calming her down. And she’s still mixing things up. Last year Smyth performed a Christmas show with Bill Murray at the Carlyle, and now she’s heading back there for five intimate nights October 20–24.     Ian Gillan on Deep Purple’s New Era, Ritchie Blackmore Reunion and the Stories Behind “Smoke on the Water” and “Highway Star”

In a new interview on Joann Butler in Studio With..., the Deep Purple frontman says the band’s current tour is “probably the best we’ve ever done,” calling the schedule intense, even “insane,” but still exciting after all these years. One of the biggest moments came when Ritchie Blackmore joined Deep Purple onstage in New York. Gillan says Blackmore reached out beforehand asking if he could “step up in ‘Smoke,’” a request that instantly made him smile. He describes the reunion as warm and magical, adding that whatever problems existed between them had been put behind them years ago. Gillan also gets into Deep Purple’s new album, Splat!, and why the current lineup feels so connected to the band’s classic sound. He says guitarist Simon McBride has brought a more grounded approach and that the new songs fit seamlessly alongside the older material live. The band’s creative process remains refreshingly old-school too: they jam together, shape the songs as a group and record much of the album live in the studio. Of course, Joann also takes Gillan back into Deep Purple history. He recalls “Highway Star” coming together on a bus ride to Brighton after a journalist asked how the band wrote songs — and says they played it that same night. “Smoke on the Water,” meanwhile, grew out of the real-life Montreux fire and eventually became one of the most played rock songs on radio. He also looks back on the early days of Deep Purple coming together, the instant chemistry he felt with Roger Glover, the story behind Child in Time, how the band reunited over curry and a phone call to Jon Lord, and the camaraderie that once connected Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.     The Who’s Roger Daltrey Talks Possible Final Tour, Future with Drummer Zak Starkey, and Gives Thanks to Fans for Decades of Support

In a new conversation on Joann Butler in Studio With..., while on his current tour, A Great Night Out!, the 82-year-old frontman says this solo run could possibly be his last, as he looks forward to a more ordinary life and continued charity work. That doesn’t necessarily mean The Who are done. Daltrey reveals that he and Pete Townshend recently rehearsed with longtime drummer Zak Starkey to see whether the band could possibly play shows next year. He also recounts the early days of how the band came together and the moment Keith Moon joined the group and instantly changed everything. Daltrey also revisits the famous stutter in “My Generation,” explaining how an accidental vocal moment became part of one of The Who’s most iconic songs. He gets candid about AI too, particularly the unsettling reality that technology can now replicate his voice. The conversation isn’t all rock history.     Train’s Pat Monahan on 25 Years of Drops of Jupiter, New Album Mad Dog in the Fog and Touring with His Son

The multi-GRAMMY Award-winning band is currently on its Drops of Jupiter: 25 Years in the Atmosphere Tour with Barenaked Ladies and Matt Nathanson, ahead of the August 28 release of Train’s 12th studio album, Mad Dog in the Fog. And this time, Monahan has a special tourmate. “My 14-year-old son is with me, so he's performing every night and going viral on the internet,” Monahan told LifeMinute's editor-in-chief Joann Butler during the Joann Butler in Studio With... interview.  Of all the songs he has written, Monahan still considers “Drops of Jupiter” the most significant. “Writing that about my mom… for it to connect with people like it has over the years, pretty cool,” he said. The 2001 hit has since earned RIAA Diamond status and surpassed two billion Spotify streams. Train’s new album, Mad Dog in the Fog, brings Monahan back to the band’s beginnings. Named after a San Francisco bar where Train played for free in its early days, the record traces what he describes as his journey “from Pennsylvania to San Francisco.” His road to Train almost sounds like a movie itself. While Monahan was playing in a cover band in Erie, Pennsylvania, members of Cher’s touring band happened to catch his set. Cher guitarist David Shelley pulled him aside afterward and told him, “You need to move to LA because you've got the thing.” It was the push Monahan needed to take a chance on music — a decision that would ultimately lead him to Train.  Monahan also opens up about the deeply personal story behind new song “Pennsylvania Turnpike,” finding his own voice as a songwriter, his upcoming musical Begin Again, and why he believes music can heal, guide and bring people back.  This is LifeMinute with Train's Pat Monahan.

Decades into a career built on fearless genre-blending and high-energy performances, Angelo Moore and Christopher Dowd are still making music together and finding new ways to move Fishbone forward.  The two musicians first met when they were just 12 years old in band class, beginning a friendship and creative partnership that would eventually become part of the foundation of Fishbone.  Now, the band is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its 1986 debut full-length album, In Your Face, with the limited-edition double LP In Your Face / Cover Your Face. The release pairs a newly remastered edition of the original album with Cover Your Face, a tribute collection of artists reinterpreting Fishbone’s songs. Silversun Pickups took on “In the Air,” while Doom Regulator—featuring Tim Armstrong, Jesse Michaels, Joey Castillo and Spencer Pollard—reimagined “Simon Says ‘The Kingpin.’” The milestone isn’t only about looking back. Fishbone is also working on new music, with Dowd telling LifeMinute Editor-in-Chief Joann Butler that a new record is expected before the end of the year.  She hopped aboard Fishbone’s tour bus during a spring New Jersey stop on the In Your Face 40th Anniversary Tourfor a stripped-down conversation with the band.
