Black Box Theory

Opening once locked doors and sharing a map to the maze. We're Malcolm and Thomas, two engineers who got into the room at one of the biggest tech companies in the world. Pretty quickly we figured out that nobody hands you the manual once you're inside. Black Box Theory is us working it out loud. Every week we get into what's actually going on, and we talk about it the way we would anyway: honestly, with receipts, and without pretending we have it all figured out. Some weeks that's a trillion-dollar IPO and what it really means for your money. Some weeks it's a Supreme Court ruling, a story taking over the timeline, or where the NBA is headed. Usually it's a mix of all of it, plus whatever we couldn't stop going back and forth about that week. The point is always the same. We want to understand how this stuff really works: who's winning, who's paying for it, and what you can do with that once you can see it. We're not financial advisors and we're not career coaches. We're two people a few years into figuring it out, sharing what we've learned and what we're still learning. If you're early in your career and tired of watching other people win without understanding why, you'll feel at home here. New episodes every week. 3 Things That Keep You Steady When the Industry Isn't

Layoffs, pivots, whole roles disappearing overnight — the ground keeps moving. In this clip, Wesley gives you three things that don't. Guest Wesley Grammer lays out three anchors for navigating a volatile industry landscape. First, knowing your value — so you never let a shaky market set your price. Second, staying flexible and ready to pivot, moving with change instead of getting flattened by it. Acquaintance or Real Friend? How to Tell the Difference

Everybody's got a lot of "friends." Very few have the ones who'd show up at 2 a.m. In this clip we get into the difference that actually matters. Malcolm and Thomas reflect on the real significance of friendship — having a close circle you can trust and lean on when things get hard — and draw the line most people blur: the difference between acquaintances and genuine friends. The real ones aren't just people you know; they're the ones who act like family, who show up when it counts and expect nothing for it. It's a reminder to count the few who are truly in your corner, and to be that person for them too. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — The Essence of Friendship 02:56 — Defining True Friends 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • A close circle you can trust and rely on is one of life's real assets • There's a real difference between acquaintances and genuine friends • True friends act like family — they show up when it's hard, no strings attached — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Startups Don't Hold Your Hand — Here's the Mindset You Need

At a big company, there's a process for everything. At a startup, the process is often you. In this clip we get into the mindset that requires. Guest Wesley Grammer breaks down what really separates a startup from a large corporation once you're in the seat: the work culture, the communication, and the fact that nobody's handing you a checklist. Startups run on proactive work and self-motivation — you have to be a self-starter. But that's also the upside: a bigger role, more ownership, and real exposure to stakeholders you'd never get near at a big company. If you're thinking about making the jump, know what it asks of you first. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Proactive Work and Self-Motivation in Startups 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Startups run on proactive work and self-motivation — you have to be a self-starter • Less structure means more ownership and a much bigger role • You get real exposure to stakeholders you'd rarely reach at a big company — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Do Men and Women Do Friendship Differently?

Men and women often build friendships in completely different ways — but the thing that makes the close ones last is the same. In this clip we get into both. Malcolm and Thomas break down the dynamics of friendship, including the real differences in how men and women tend to approach their relationships — what they open up about, how they show up, what "close" even looks like. But they keep landing on the common ground: the friendships that actually hold are built on trust, support, and intentionality. Different styles, same foundation. It's an honest conversation about what it really takes to let people in. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Understanding Friendship Dynamics 03:07 — The Role of Trust in Close Relationships 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Men and women often approach friendship differently — in style, openness, and expression • Trust and support are the foundation of every close friendship, regardless of approach • Intentionality is what turns a casual connection into a real one — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. The Courage to Choose a Different Path | Wesley Grammer

The plan you started with isn't a contract. Sometimes the smartest move is admitting the path changed — and following it. In this clip Wesley makes the case. Guest Wesley Grammer talks through how his passion for electronics slowly came into focus and led him somewhere different than he'd expected. He gets into the harder, quieter decision underneath it: choosing a different path than the one you planned, staying open to new opportunities as they appear, and trusting the process even when you can't see the whole staircase. If you're second-guessing a pivot, this is the encouragement to take the step. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Discovering Passion for Electronics 01:34 — Choosing a Different Path 02:32 — Exploring New Opportunities 03:03 — Trusting the Process 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • A passion for electronics can pull you toward a path you didn't originally plan • Choosing a different direction takes courage — and it's often the right call • Staying open to new opportunities and trusting the process gets you further than a rigid plan — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map. Friendships in Your 20s Don't Survive on Autopilot

Nobody warns you that your friend group quietly shrinks in your 20s — and that the ones who stay are the ones you both choose to keep. In this clip we get honest about it. Malcolm and Thomas talk through the real dynamics of friendship in your 20s: how social circles naturally thin out as everyone scatters chasing their own career and life, and why that's normal — not a failure. The part that matters is intentionality. The close relationships that make it are the ones with mutual investment, where both people actually show up. If your inner circle matters to you, this is the reminder to put real effort into it before life does the choosing for you. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — Navigating Friendship Dynamics in Your 20s 02:53 — The Importance of Intentionality in Friendships 📊 Key takeaways from this segment: • Social circles naturally shrink in your 20s — that's normal, not a failure • The friendships that last take intentionality and mutual investment • If your inner circle matters, put the effort in before life decides for you — 📦 Black Box Theory decodes tech, wealth, power, and culture for everyone who got in the room without a map.
