Nehemiah 1: The Prayer That Stops One Verse Short

🎧 Day 292 | Nehemiah 1 | The Prayer That Stops One Verse Short A man prays one of the great prayers of the Bible, quoting Scripture as he goes. Listen to where he stops. The very next verse of his source is the promise this whole book is waiting for. He never says it. Neither does anyone else in this book. Yesterday, radical repentance, and the high priest's family first on the list. Thirteen years later, Susa. Nehemiah, cupbearer to the king, hears that the wall is broken down and the gates burned. He sits and weeps — Ezra's posture. Today's tool: read where the quote stops. When someone prays Scripture, find the source and read one verse past the stop. The scattering in his prayer is Deuteronomy 4:27. The gathering, from the farthest horizon, is Deuteronomy 30:4, running into verse 5. Warning and answer, twenty-six chapters apart, in one breath. Now read Deuteronomy 30:6: the LORD will circumcise your hearts, so that you may love him. Heart surgery. The next sentence in his source. He stops one verse short. The prayer asks God to gather his people. It does not ask God to change them. And start a second count. Verse 8: "Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses." Number one — and he asks God to remember his own word. Eight times in this book someone says "remember." Where it points is going to change. If you know Isaiah 58:12, Nehemiah is about to grow into "Repairer of Broken Walls." Isaiah also wanted hearts that tremble. Nehemiah can build walls. Watch whether he can build hearts. Tomorrow he stands in front of the king — and he will take the escort Ezra refused. #Nehemiah #Bible #BibleReading #Deuteronomy #DailyBibleReading Daily Bible Reading is a chapter-by-chapter Bible reading podcast from Christ Church Hemel, helping you read through the Bible one chapter at a time. Ezra 10: The Name at the Top of the List

🎧 Day 291 | Ezra 10 | The Name at the Top of the List A list of guilty names closes this chapter. The family at the top is the last one you would expect — a name this book has taught us to trust since the altar went up. And it will make you wait thirteen chapters to find out why it matters. Yesterday Ezra sat appalled, and the tremblers gathered. Today the proposal is a covenant to send the women and their children away. The counsel it claims is "those who fear the commands of our God" — the same Hebrew as "trembled" in 9:4. The text never tells you what God makes of it. The assembly sits in the square in the rain, greatly distressed. A commission takes three months. Case by case. Nobody can say they were not serious. Then verse 18. Among the descendants of the priests: the descendants of Joshua son of Jozadak. Joshua built the altar. Joshua laid the foundations. The high priest. His family heads the list. Lists are theology, and this one does not skip the top. Store that name. At the far end of the book we meet another high priest's family, and another marriage. The heart will not stay true. The most radical reform in the book so far, and the question it plants stays open: can reform change the heart? Nobody answers it here. Tomorrow the book falls silent for thirteen years. When it speaks, it is a new voice, in a palace a thousand miles away, weeping over news from home. #Ezra #Bible #BibleReading #Repentance #DailyBibleReading Daily Bible Reading is a chapter-by-chapter Bible reading podcast from Christ Church Hemel, helping you read through the Bible one chapter at a time. Ezra 9: The First People Who Trembled

🎧 Day 290 | Ezra 9 | The First People Who Trembled Isaiah wrote down what God is looking for, centuries before this chapter: people who tremble at his word. Today, for the first time in this book, that word appears on the page — on the worst day the community has had since coming home. Yesterday the hand of God carried them past bandits. Six times, and counting. Today the temple stands, the teacher has landed, and the leaders bring the news: the people, including the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate. The word is "like" the practices of nations that no longer exist. This is apostasy, not ethnicity — the same worship-not-bloodline line as the refusal in chapter 4 and the welcome in chapter 6. And the leaders and officials have led the way. Ezra tears his own clothes, pulls hair from his own head, and sits appalled until the evening sacrifice. Verse 4: everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered round him. Put your finger on Isaiah 66:2. Same word. In your English Bible, "trembled" appears here and nowhere else in Ezra-Nehemiah. A handful. And the prayer says "our sins" — Ezra has not done this, and he stands inside it. Store verse 10: "But now, our God, what can we say after this?" A real question. Nobody answers it. Not in the rest of the prayer. Not in chapter 10. Not at the end of the book. The first of four great prayers, and it asks for nothing. It ends inside the guilt. Tomorrow the community takes drastic action — and the first name on the list is the last one you would expect. #Ezra #Bible #BibleReading #Isaiah66 #DailyBibleReading Daily Bible Reading is a chapter-by-chapter Bible reading podcast from Christ Church Hemel, helping you read through the Bible one chapter at a time. Ezra 8: 900 Miles, No Escort

🎧 Day 289 | Ezra 8 | 900 Miles, No Escort A man is about to walk nine hundred miles through bandit country, carrying tonnes of silver and gold. The king would give him soldiers. He only has to ask. He cannot — because of one sentence he has already said. Yesterday the hand of God, three times, on a man set on the word. Today the count doubles, and the road tests the sentence. First a gap in the roll: no Levites. The people you would most expect to volunteer do not. Ezra sends for them by name, and verse 18 credits the gracious hand — number four — when they come. Then verse 22. He is ashamed to ask for soldiers, because they had told the king: the gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him. Number five, and this one is a claim made in advance, to a watching king. So he proclaims a fast. Seek first. Set out second. Verse 31: the hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits. Number six. All six in two chapters, clustered around one man and one journey. Store the number. And file the choice: a man who could have asked for an imperial escort, and would not, as a matter of public witness. Someone else in this book will face the same road and choose the other way. The gracious hand carried them. That is a gift, not a method for buying protection. Tomorrow he arrives in Jerusalem. What he finds is worse than anything on the road. #Ezra #Bible #BibleReading #Providence #DailyBibleReading Daily Bible Reading is a chapter-by-chapter Bible reading podcast from Christ Church Hemel, helping you read through the Bible one chapter at a time. Ezra 7: The Man Who Spotted God in His Own Paperwork

🎧 Day 288 | Ezra 7 | The Man Who Spotted God in His Own Paperwork A man starts telling his own story — "I", for the first time in this book. The first thing he says about his emperor is what this book said about a different emperor, eighty years earlier. Yesterday the temple stood, with a title that whispered the exile was not over. Between chapter 6 and chapter 7, fifty-seven years pass. Then Ezra: a priest whose line runs to Aaron, and a teacher versed in the Law of Moses. Count the hand of God. Verse 6. Verse 9. Verse 28. Three today. Today's tool: track the repeated phrase. Count where it clusters — and watch just as carefully for where it stops. A phrase falling silent can say more than the phrase ever did. Verse 10: Ezra had set his heart to study, to observe, and to teach. In that order. The text reports it. It does not hand you a course. Artaxerxes funds judges and Torah-teaching — the shape of Moses' work, paid for by a pagan king. The chapter does not say "a second Moses." That is a pattern we are noticing. Then verse 27, and the voice changes: praise be to the LORD, who has put it into the king's heart. Ezra 1:1, eighty years on. Different Hebrew. Same move. He has spotted God's fingerprints on his own paperwork. God's hand is on those set on his word. A set heart is not yet a heart that stays true. Watch whether the hand is enough. Tomorrow that hand gets tested on the open road — nine hundred miles, and he cannot ask for soldiers. #Ezra #Bible #BibleReading #HandOfGod #DailyBibleReading Daily Bible Reading is a chapter-by-chapter Bible reading podcast from Christ Church Hemel, helping you read through the Bible one chapter at a time. Ezra 6:13–22: The King Who Didn't Exist

🎧 Day 287 | Ezra 6:13-22 | The King Who Didn't Exist A king gets a strange title in the last verse of today's reading — the verse that credits God with changing his attitude. The narrator has just named him. King Darius. The title belongs to an empire that had been gone for nearly a century. Yesterday God restarted the work through preaching and a filing cabinet. Today, 515 BC, the temple is finished — twenty-three years after the first return. Verse 14 is the hinge: they finished it according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes. In the Aramaic, one word for "decree" governs all three names, and it is the same word as God's command. Three emperors. One decree. Then Passover, and verse 21: the returned exiles eat it with all who had separated themselves from the unclean practices of their neighbours in order to seek the LORD. Chapter 4 refused diluted help. Chapter 6 welcomes people who leave those practices and seek him. Worship decides, both times. Then verse 22: the LORD filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king of Assyria. There is no king of Assyria. Assyria fell before Babylon. The likeliest reason for the title: Assyria is where the exile began, and the throne has changed hands twice, and God's people still live under the power that took them. The temple is finished. The captivity, in the ways that matter most, is not. Exile in the land. Remember the empty space at Ezra 3? Still empty. Real, though not yet whole. Tomorrow the book skips fifty-seven years in a single verse. Esther's whole story sits inside that gap. A teacher arrives. #Ezra #Bible #BibleReading #Passover #DailyBibleReading Daily Bible Reading is a chapter-by-chapter Bible reading podcast from Christ Church Hemel, helping you read through the Bible one chapter at a time. Ezra 5:1–6:12: The Miracle in the Filing Cabinet

🎧 Day 286 | Ezra 5:1-6:12 | The Miracle in the Filing Cabinet A stalled building project for God gets rescued by a piece of paperwork. A document nobody has seen for years, buried in a foreign archive, hundreds of miles from Jerusalem. Anyone waiting for a miracle got one. It came out of a filing cabinet. Yesterday the enemies' playbook won, for now. About fifteen years of foundations and weeds. Then Haggai and Zechariah prophesy, and people who had stopped for fifteen years pick up their tools. Not a new strategy. Preaching. Tattenai asks twice: who authorised you to rebuild this temple and finish it? Their answer does not begin with Cyrus. "We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth." Then they volunteer the fact a defendant would hide: our ancestors angered God, and he gave them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar. Asked for paperwork, they hand over a confession. Darius orders a search. In the citadel of Ecbatana they find Cyrus's decree. Go back to Ezra 4:19. There a search stopped the work. Here the same machinery saves it. What changed is already in 5:5: the eye of their God was watching. For every one of those silent years, the decree was already in the archive. And who pays? Darius funds the temple from the taxes of the province of the governor who came asking questions. What has God already finished that you are treating as too ordinary to count? Tomorrow the temple is finished — and a king gets a title that belongs to an empire a century dead. #Ezra #Bible #BibleReading #Haggai #DailyBibleReading Daily Bible Reading is a chapter-by-chapter Bible reading podcast from Christ Church Hemel, helping you read through the Bible one chapter at a time. Ezra 4: The Enemies Who Offered to Help

🎧 Day 285 | Ezra 4 | The Enemies Who Offered to Help The most dangerous sentence in this chapter is not a threat. It is four friendly words, and they arrive sounding like an answer to prayer. The narrator has already told you who is speaking. Yesterday, joy and weeping, heard far away. Unfortunately, the wrong people heard it. Verse 1 calls them the enemies of Judah and Benjamin before they open their mouths. Verse 2: "Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God." 2 Kings 17 is their story — the LORD, plus a shelf of other gods. Zerubbabel and Joshua refuse. The refusal is about worship, not bloodline. Then the mask comes off. Count the tactics: false friendship, discouragement, fear, bribery, legal accusation. Five, and not one of them a sword — until verse 23, when the paperwork turns into force. Verses 6 to 23 jump decades ahead, to the walls, under Xerxes and Artaxerxes, then verse 24 rewinds. The hostility is not a one-off. It stretches across kings and building projects. And it works. The work on the house of God comes to a standstill until the second year of Darius — about fifteen years. The chapter is bracketed on that date, and it closes on the stop. No comfort. A lawful halt does not mean the work was never God's. Which tactic is working on you? Tomorrow God restarts what the enemies shut down — and the rescue comes out of a filing cabinet. #Ezra #Bible #BibleReading #Opposition #DailyBibleReading Daily Bible Reading is a chapter-by-chapter Bible reading podcast from Christ Church Hemel, helping you read through the Bible one chapter at a time.
