Game On | This Week in Video Game History Ep 40

In 1972, about twenty programmers at Stanford played Spacewar for a title, and the winner took home a year of Rolling Stone. In 2016, the voices behind our favorite characters went on strike for the first time. This week: when playing games stopped being a party of one. This week we're covering October 19th through October 25th, and the theme is game on: the moment video games became something we share, compete in, and watch together. Plus the people who make those worlds feel alive.Metal Gear Solid hides us under a cardboard box, with a voice cast credited under made-up names. Grand Theft Auto III** turns 25 and drops us into a whole city in 3D. **Grabbed by the Ghoulies** is Rare's first game for Microsoft, with the Grim Reaper on our heels. **Civilization IV gets narrated by Leonard Nimoy and makes Grammy history. Borderlands pitches "Halo meets Diablo." Fallout: New Vegas, one of my all-time favorites, misses its Metacritic bonus by one point. Batman: Arkham Origins gives us a brand-new voice under the cowl. And Lethal Company sends four friends to haul scrap on abandoned moons. Then three deep dives: the Intergalactic Spacewar Olympics, the first video game tournament on record; the 2016 video game voice actor strike; and Club Penguin the snowy online world three friends built for their kids.Games have always been about the people. The ones we play with, the ones we play against, and the ones who bring the whole thing to life. Save your game, nerds.Chapter Markers00:00 -- Cold Open — "When did playing video games stop being a party of one?"02:00 -- Theme by Shane Madani02:17 -- Intro — welcome + this week's lineup04:37 -- Timeline Intro04:47 -- Timeline: Metal Gear Solid (1998)06:27 -- Timeline: Grand Theft Auto III (2001)07:57 -- Timeline: Grabbed by the Ghoulies (2003)09:16 -- Timeline: Civilization IV (2005)10:34 -- Timeline: Borderlands (2009)11:49 -- Timeline: Fallout: New Vegas (2010)13:58 -- Timeline: Batman: Arkham Origins (2013)15:12 -- Timeline: Lethal Company (2023)16:56 -- Timeline Outro17:27 -- Deep Dive 1 — The First Champion (Spacewar Olympics)21:31 -- Deep Dive 2 — The Voices Walk Out (Voice Actor Strike)26:57 -- Deep Dive 3 — Waddle On (Club Penguin)30:23 -- Outro + credits + next-week teaserVideo Credits**Timeline**- Metal Gear Solid ... First Contact | This Week in Video Game History Ep 39 Oct 12 – 18

In 1958, a physicist built a tennis game for a lab open house, and people lined up to play. In 1985, Nintendo shipped 100,000 NES consoles to one city and made stores an offer they couldn't refuse. This week: how games first find their way to you. This week we're covering October 12th through October 18th, and every story is about first contact: the moment a game finally meets the people it was made for.The way games find us keeps changing. The feeling when they do never has. Worth the Wait | TWIVGH Ep 38 (Oct 5 - 11)

Nintendo dreamed up Metroid Dread around 2005, then shelved it. Fans waited sixteen years to play it. This week, we're asking whether the wait makes a game better, starting with the Mario sequel that wasn't really a Mario game. This week we're covering October 5th through October 11th, and almost every game on the list comes with a wait attached.**Super Mario Bros. 2** finally reaches America, and it's hiding a secret. **Mortal Kombat** hits arcades and helps give us the ESRB. **Doom II** takes id Software's shareware sensation to store shelves, and **Final Fantasy III** (yes, it's really VI) gives the West a villain for the ages. **Jedi Knight** puts a lightsaber in your hand, **Viewtiful Joe** slows down time, **The Orange Box** packs five games into one, **Dishonored** lets you play it your way, and **Alien: Isolation** gives fans the terrifying Alien game they'd been waiting for. And we close on the longest wait of all: **Metroid Dread**, sixteen years from the drawing board to your Switch. Then three deep dives: how **Doom stopped being free**, how Nokia's **N-Gage** became "the taco phone," and how a **student project** became **Portal** and stole the spotlight from Half-Life 2.Some things are worth the wait. Some things really aren't. Founders & Farewells | This Week in Video Game History Ep 37 (Sept 28-Oct 4)

We're covering September 28th – October 4th — and this week, the games take a back seat to the people who made them. It's the week four programmers walked out of Atari and founded Activision, inventing the third-party studio; the birthday (and the just-announced retirement) of immersive-sim godfather Warren Spector; the Bandai–Namco merger; and the anniversary of the loss of Gunpei Yokoi, the quiet genius behind the Game Boy and the D-pad. Around them: Super Mario 64's leap into 3D, Pokémon Red & Blue's American debut, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Cuphead, Astro Bot, and Cut the Rope — plus an October Round-Up back to the Atari 2600. Founders, and farewells. Beginnings, and goodbyes. Save your game, nerds.— Artwork by MizTink. Music by Shane Madani (Twitch & Spotify). The Week Games Grew Up | TWIVGH Ep 36 (Sept 21-27)

We're covering September 21st–27th — the week games grew up. It runs from Myst (1993), the no-enemies puzzle island that became the best-selling PC game of the decade, through Baldur's Gate II, Katamari Damacy, and Halo 3's Finish-the-Fight blockbuster launch, to Fortnite's free battle royale that ate the industry, a real lightsaber in VR with Vader Immortal, and Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty completing modern gaming's greatest comeback. Plus two deep dives: how Myst, Silent Hill 2, and Ico proved games can be art, and how battle royale swallowed the whole business. Also featuring Wing Commander (1990).
