Beyond The Game More Stories | Episode 35 | Featuring India Chiles (Head Coach Emory University)

On this episode of Beyond The Game: More Stories, we sit down with India Chiles, Head Softball Coach at Emory University, for a conversation about much more than softball. A Louisville, Kentucky native, India grew up in a highly athletic family before building an incredible career of her own. At the University of Tennessee, she developed into one of the best slap hitters in college softball, becoming an All-American and SEC Player of the Year while helping the Lady Vols reach three consecutive Women’s College World Series appearances. Her journey eventually included an invitation to the USA Softball National Team selection camp and being drafted professionally. But the accomplishments only tell part of her story. We talk about growing up surrounded by successful athletes and finding her own identity, the influence of family and siblings, handling expectations, and what it took to compete at the highest level. India also opens up about toughness, including competing through significant injuries during her senior season and refusing to allow adversity to become an excuse. We discuss the transition from athlete to life after sports, her professional career away from the field, finding her way into coaching, and eventually becoming the head coach at Emory University. Throughout the conversation, we dive into the lessons that extend far Beyond The Game—responding to hard coaching, accepting change without interpreting it as failure, overcoming fear, developing confidence, pushing through moments when quitting feels easier, and understanding that adversity can reveal things about you that success never could. India also shares her perspective as a coach now responsible for developing young women not simply into better softball players, but into people prepared for whatever comes after their playing careers. As a player at Butler, Ronald was part of one of the most memorable stretches in college basketball history, helping lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA National Championship games in 2010 and 2011. Known for his leadership, toughness, defense, and willingness to embrace his role, Ronald became part of a Butler program that showed the country what couldhappen when belief, preparation, and unselfishness came together. His journey after playing took him into coaching, eventually leading to opportunities at both the collegiate and professionallevels, including years working in the NBA. Now, his journey has come full circle as he returns to Butler with the opportunity to lead the program he once represented as a player. But this conversation goes far beyond wins, losses, Final Fours, and basketball. We talk about:• The person Ronald was when he first arrived at Butler versus the person he became• Learning to embrace a role and understanding that your value isn't always measured by scoring• The belief inside the Butler locker room during the historic 2010 and 2011 NCAA Tournament runs• Going from being an underdog to dealing with expectations after reaching the National Championship game• What those back-to-back championship runs taught him about preparation, confidence, leadership, and believing before everyone else does• The Butler culture and what made those teams special beyond talent• Making the transition from player to coach• Learning how to lead different personalities and generations of athletes• His journey through professional basketball and what coaching in the NBA taught him about the game and success• Handling pressure, expectations, setbacks, and uncertainty• Returning to Butler and what it means to come back to a place that played such an important role in his own development• The difference between 18-year-old Ronald Nored walking onto Butler's campus and Coach Nored now leading the program• How sports can prepare us for opportunities and responsibilities we never imagined when the journey began Ronald's story is a reminder that sometimes successisn't about where the journey takes you—it's about who you become along the way and what you're prepared to give back when the journey brings you home.
