Principle 9 - Equity in the use of data and design of algorithms

Welcome to this week’s episode of the podcast, where we examine not just the pitfalls but also the potential of data in the realm of health equity. Our experts this week are Maxine Mackintosh - data guru and Co-Director of  One HealthTech and leading light  Rony Arafin,  Director of Insights at the British Heart Foundation, Deputy Chair of the NHS Chief Data & Analytics Officers Network and former CEO of the Association of Professional Healthcare Analysts. In this thought-provoking conversation we discuss the real-world impact of inequity in the data world, why disaggregating data by ethnicity isn’t necessarily all it’s cracked up to be, and also how AI can help us uncover inequity, rather than exacerbating it. As you would expect, we have a whole host of resources below mentioned by our data-driven experts to supplement the discussion: Health Equity Assessment Toolkit  The Data Observatory  Data Science for Health Equity  Inequity in cardiovascular health  Hidden in Plain Sight — Reconsidering the Use of Race Correction in Clinical Algorithms  Research funding bias Racial bias in genomics  NHS Chief Data and Analytical Officer Network  Don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe, and let us know what you think of the show! Episode 0 - What is the Equity Charter?

Welcome to the introductory episode of the Equity Charter podcast. The Equity Charter is a social movement to promote equity within the digital health sector in order to narrow the health inequality gap. Our Charter consists of 10 principles and some accompanying actions,  for any individuals or organisations working in this space to make tangible change. In this series we will be doing a deep dive into each principle in turn with a selection of subject matter experts sharing their expertise and perspectives. In this episode, you’ll meet all three co-founders: Ayesha Rahim, NHS psychiatrist and CCIO, Victoria Betton, Director for Digital, Data and AI, and Hassan Chaudhury, Digital Propositions Lead for Medica, who will tell you why they started the movement and how it all came about. You’ll also hear from our special guest Jon Hoeksma, CEO of Future Health Intelligence who was instrumental in the launch of the Charter in 2024. And here are some links to some books which we’ve found helpful: Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race White Fragility So You Want to Talk About Race Invisible Women Don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe, and let us know what you think of the show!
