Episode 34- We Watched The Plastic Detox… Here’s What Stuck With Us

Plastic is probably showing up in more of your life than you realize. In your water bottle, your food containers, your clothes, your beauty products, and even in things you probably never thought twice about. After watching The Plastic Detox, we found ourselves looking at everyday life a little differently. And honestly, some of what we learned was a lot to take in. In this episode, we’re breaking down the documentary, talking through the research that surprised us most, and sharing the simple changes we’re actually making in our own homes. We get into microplastics, endocrine disruption, metabolism, fertility, “obesogens,” synthetic fabrics, food packaging, and all the places plastic can sneak into our everyday routines. But this is not a conversation about throwing everything in your house away and starting over. We’re very much in the “let’s take a breath and figure out what actually matters” camp. We talk about what we think is worth changing first, what we’re not stressing about, and how to make better choices without becoming overwhelmed or feeling like every purchase is somehow ruining your health. We share some of the swaps we’ve already made, from plant-based sponges and bamboo toothbrushes to stainless steel coffee gear, along with the things we’re still figuring out. Because cleaner living is rarely all-or-nothing. Sometimes the better option costs more, works differently, or means giving up something you really like. We also get into overconsumption, why so many products seem to fall apart faster than they used to, the importance of brand transparency and shopping locally, and a few tools that can make figuring all of this out a little easier. In this episode, we talk about: The everyday plastic exposures that surprised us mostWhy water bottles, microwaving plastic and canned foods deserve a closer lookWhich synthetic fabrics we’re paying more attention to, including polyester, nylon, acrylic and spandexThe connection between plastic, hormones, metabolism and fertility that sparked some serious conversationWhat “Obesogens” are and why they’re getting so much attentionHow overconsumption affects both our health and the quality of the things we buyThe swaps we’ve actually made, and which ones we’re still working onWhy we’re not planning to throw away every piece of workout clothing we ownHow brand transparency, local shopping and resources like the EWG app can helpWhere to start if you want to reduce your exposure without completely overhauling your lifeMost importantly, this episode is about finding the middle ground. Because once you learn how widespread plastic is, it’s easy to think, Well, now what? Do I need to replace everything I own? Our answer: no. Start with one thing. Make the next purchase a little better. Then the one after that. You don’t need a perfect pantry, a plastic-free house or a complete eco-makeover to make meaningful changes. We’re figuring this out right alongside you. Start where you are, do what you can, and keep going.

Episode 33- Your Gut Is Trying to Tell You Something with Dr. Sophie Kuizenga-Wessel

What if the bloating, constipation, eczema, or anxiety you’ve been trying to “fix” isn’t actually the whole problem? What if it’s a clue? Crissy and Marie sit down with Dr. Sophie Kuizenga-Wessel for a fascinating conversation about the gut, the brain, the microbiome, and what happens when we start looking beyond the symptom. Dr. Sophie brings a root-cause approach to gut health that goes far beyond “just take a supplement.” Together, they talk about orthomolecular medicine, functional and integrative care, and why understanding the timeline of your symptoms can completely change the way you think about your health. They get into the everyday stuff, too: picky eaters, fiber, beans and lentils, SIBO, bloating, dysbiosis, stress, anxiety, food fear, and what it really means to build a healthier gut without turning your life into one giant wellness checklist. In this episode, you’ll hear: • What orthomolecular medicine actually means • Why Dr. Sophie uses a “movie timeline” to uncover root causes • Common gut issues she sees in babies, kids, teens, and adults • How to support picky eaters without turning every meal into a battle • Why “start low and go slow” matters when adding fiber-rich foods • How SIBO, bloating, and dysbiosis can fit into the bigger picture • Why the 80/20 rule only works when you understand your own baseline • How stress, rushing, and eating while dysregulated can affect digestion • The gut-brain-microbiome connection • Why anxiety can be both a trigger and a symptom • Why gut health is about diversity, not chasing the next “superfood” • Simple ways to add more plants, herbs, seeds, and color to your everyday life This isn’t about eating perfectly. It isn’t about finding one magic food or supplement. It’s about learning to pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you’ve ever wondered why your stomach seems to run your life, why the same symptoms keep coming back, or why your body suddenly feels completely out of balance, this conversation offers a more compassionate and practical place to start. About Dr. Sophie Kuizenga-Wessel Dr. Sophie Kuizenga-Wessel is a physician based in Amsterdam with a background in functional and orthomolecular medicine. Episode 32- Let’s Talk Lymph: Swelling, Recovery & Nervous System Support with Babz

Lymphatic health is having a moment. But what the heck does your lymphatic system actually do? Turns out... a LOT. In this episode, Crissy and Marie sit down with Babz, an occupational therapist, certified lymphedema therapist, and founder of Balance with Babs, to talk about the body system most of us barely think about until something goes wrong. And because this is Two Girls, we’re going way beyond “detox.” Babz breaks down how the lymphatic system supports fluid movement, immunity, digestion, recovery, and so much more. She also shares the very personal story that led her into lymphatic care: watching her mom navigate lymphedema and eventually turning that experience into her own specialty. We get into: Why your lymphatic system might be the body’s ultimate unsung heroThe four pillars Babz uses to support lymphatic health: manual lymph drainage, breath work, movement, and self-careHer 10-step lymphatic routine, how it builds on the popular “big six,” and why she likes doing it before yoga or exerciseWhat swelling and pitting edema can actually tell youCompression garments, lymphedema therapists, and when it’s time to get some professional helpWhat breast cancer, lymph node removal, and surgery can mean for lymph flowWhy movement and massage can still be meaningful parts of recoveryHow lymphatic work connects with the nervous system, self-connection, and feeling more at home in your bodyCrissy also brings her own perspective as a breast cancer survivor and yoga teacher, talking honestly about what changed for her after diagnosis and why proactive body care became so important. And then there’s motherhood. Babz opens up about becoming a new mom, how it has changed her relationship with her own energy and body, and how she brings some of these same principles to caring for her baby, including gentle facial drainage and Reiki. Basically, we’re talking lymph, swelling, cancer recovery, motherhood, nervous system regulation, energy, and the very complicated relationship we all have with our bodies. If you’ve been confused by all the lymphatic wellness trends, wondering what’s actually worth paying attention to, dealing with swelling, navigating cancer recovery, caring for a new baby, or simply wanting to understand your body a little better, this conversation is for you. Come for the lymph. Stay for the reminder that caring for your body doesn’t have to be another thing to “fix.” Sometimes it’s about slowing down, paying attention, and learning how to support what your body is already trying to do. Episode 31- Becoming the CEO of Your Own Healing with Julie Stevens

What if you refused to hand your power over to cancer? After a stage four cancer diagnosis, Julie Stevens made a radical decision: she wasn’t going to simply become a patient. She was going to become the CEO of her own healing. With 25 years of experience in industrial psychology, Julie approached cancer with the same tools she’d use to solve any complex problem: data, strategy, experimentation, movement, and relentless attention to what she could control. And she brought something else to the table that doesn’t always get enough credit in medicine: joy. In this deeply personal and surprisingly practical conversation, Crissy and Marie talk with Julie about everything from disco strolls and infusion parties to creating a personal “job description” for being the ideal patient. Julie explains how she used mindset, movement, nutrition, self-advocacy, and measurable health markers to navigate stage four cancer while building a life centered on resilience rather than fear. And she doesn’t stop at surviving cancer. Julie challenges us to think differently about what it means to create a body that is less hospitable to disease and more supportive of long-term health. In this episode, you’ll discover:Why Julie believes fear can interfere with healing, and how joy, play, and movement became intentional parts of her recoveryHow she turned her 25-year background in industrial psychology into a data-driven framework for being an empowered patientWhat Julie means by “live long and lucky with strategy” and how to put that mindset into practiceHer expanded view of the body’s natural defense systems, including hormones, detoxification, intuition, and the mind-body connectionThe foods she considers “multi-system superstars,” from broccoli, berries, and leafy greens to green tea, pomegranates, garlic, onions, salmon, turmeric, and fermented foodsWhy she pays attention to leading indicators such as vitamin D, magnesium, fasting insulin, and blood sugar markers before disease has a chance to raise its handWhere she sees gaps in conventional medicine and why patient-led data, research, and advocacy matterWhy she created Data G Nation, a community focused on giving people more tools to understand and participate in their own healthThis isn’t just a conversation about cancer. It’s a conversation about agency. About asking better questions. Tracking what matters. Moving your body. Finding joy in the middle of uncertainty. And refusing to believe that being diagnosed means becoming powerless. Whether you’re navigating cancer, supporting someone who is, or simply want to become more proactive about your health and longevity, Julie’s message is one worth hearing: You have more power than you’ve been told. The question is what you’re going to do with it. Episode 30- From Postpartum Struggle to a Skincare Revolution with Meagan Schreiber

The “perfect” postpartum experience? We’re calling BS on that one. In this episode, Crissy and Marie sit down with Megan Schreiber, founder of Tallow and Honey, to talk about what happens when the reality of new motherhood looks nothing like the picture you had in your head. Megan’s own postpartum experience, from breastfeeding struggles and stretch marks to feeling completely overwhelmed, eventually led her to rethink what she was putting on her body and what she actually needed during that season of life. That journey became the foundation for Tallow and Honey, a skincare brand built around simple ingredients she could trust. But this conversation goes way beyond skincare. Megan gets real about the pressure new moms feel to bounce back, the emotional toll of breastfeeding struggles, changing bodies, nervous system overload, and why postpartum support needs to include the partner, too. And of course, we talk tallow. 🐝 You’ll hear: Why Megan turned to tallow after coconut oil didn’t work for herHow Manuka honey and locally sourced animal fats became part of her approachWhy simple ingredients became so important to herWhat happens when we expect new moms to “get back to normal” way too quicklyWhy postpartum care needs to include the whole family, not just the babyHow breastfeeding struggles and body changes can affect a new mom emotionallySimple ways to help regulate when your nervous system is maxed out, from walking and bathing to breathwork and simply turning down the stimulationCrissy and Marie also get into a bigger conversation about how we support women during one of the most physically and emotionally demanding transitions of their lives. Because postpartum isn’t just about feeding the baby, tracking milestones, and figuring out the next nap. It’s about the mom, too. Megan shares how stepping away from the traditional influencer and blogging path allowed her to build a business rooted in something much more personal: her own experience, her own healing, and a genuine connection with the women and families she serves. This is an honest conversation about motherhood, body image, wellness, business, and the pressure to do it all perfectly. If you’re a new mom, love a new mom, or remember what those early days felt like, this one will probably hit a little differently. Because maybe the goal was never to “bounce back.” Maybe it was to have the support, space, and permission to figure out who you are now. Episode 29- The Emotional Weight We Carry with Crissy and Marie

Stress isn't always the enemy. Some stress can actually help you stay focused, motivated, and perform at your best. But when stress becomes constant, unresolved, and woven into everyday life, it can quietly impact your body, your energy, your relationships, and your overall well-being. In this episode of Two Girls and a Cup of Wellness, Crissy and Marie explore the difference between healthy stress (known as eustress) and the chronic stress that keeps your nervous system stuck in survival mode. The conversation also gets personal. Crissy shares how navigating difficult family circumstances, followed by her breast cancer diagnosis, changed the way she understands the powerful connection between unresolved emotions, nervous system regulation, and physical health. Marie opens up about a frightening health scare involving her mom and how months of fear, uncertainty, and chronic stress took a toll on her gut health and microbiome. In this episode, you'll learn: • What eustress is and why it can actually improve focus and performance • How chronic stress affects your hormones, blood pressure, inflammation, metabolism, and immune system • Why rumination, emotional suppression, and numbing behaviors can keep stress stored in the body • A simple daily check-in practice to reconnect with yourself: one hand on your heart, one on your belly, asking, "What do I need today?" • How movement, yoga, strength training, sunlight, quality sleep, and healthy boundaries can help regulate your nervous system Together, Crissy and Marie also talk honestly about grief, anger, overwhelm, and the pressure so many of us feel to keep pushing forward even when our bodies are asking us to slow down. If you've been feeling exhausted, emotionally drained, or stuck in a constant state of "go," this episode is an invitation to understand your stress differently and discover practical ways to support your mind, body, and overall wellness with greater awareness, compassion, and intention. Episode 28- Can Faith and Holistic Wellness Support Healing? A Survivor's Story with Joya Robertson

What happens when a breast cancer diagnosis changes everything... not just your treatment, but the way you see your body, your health, your faith, and your purpose? In this powerful episode of Two Girls and a Cup of Wellness, we sit down with Joya Robertson, a two-time breast cancer survivor, integrative health practitioner, and faith-led wellness advocate, to explore her remarkable healing journey and the profound lessons she learned along the way. The first time Joya faced breast cancer, her focus was on surviving. Like so many women, she did what she believed she needed to do to get through treatment and keep moving forward. But when cancer returned, everything shifted. She realized healing had to become so much more than a physical process. This time, she chose to face it head-on, recognizing that true healing meant caring for her whole self, body, mind, and spirit. It required her to confront emotions she had buried, strengthen her faith, and actively show up for herself in ways she never had before. That awakening led Joya to explore nutrition, detoxification, emotional healing, functional medicine, and a deeper relationship with God. Rather than simply asking, "How do I fight cancer?" she began asking, "How do I create an environment where my body can heal?" Today, she's passionate about helping other women become active participants in their own health journeys. Together, we have an honest conversation about what it means to advocate for yourself, ask better questions, and embrace healing as a lifelong journey that extends far beyond a diagnosis. In this episode, we discuss: Joya's experience as a two-time breast cancer survivor and what transformed her perspective. Why her second diagnosis became a turning point for healing her body, mind, and spirit. The role nutrition, detoxification, and lifestyle changes played in her wellness journey. How unresolved emotions, stress, and nervous system health may influence overall well-being.Why faith, hope, and community can become powerful anchors during life's hardest seasons.Practical ways to begin reducing everyday toxic exposures at home. How to feel more empowered and informed when making decisions about your health. No matter where you are on your wellness journey, this conversation is filled with encouragement, curiosity, and hope. Our goal isn't to tell you what path to choose, but to remind you that you have a voice, you have options worth exploring with your healthcare team, and you deserve to feel informed and empowered every step of the way. Whether you're navigating cancer, supporting someone you love, or simply looking to live a healthier, more intentional life, we hope this episode inspires you to listen to your body, lean into your faith, trust your intuition, and continue learning.
