    Episode 54 — I Love Boosters (2026): What the F#$k Did I Just Watch? | Fork Rating

Keke Palmer. Demi Moore. Fabulous clothes. Bright colours. A group of women stealing high-end fashion from people who can afford to lose it. I Love Boosters looks like it has all the ingredients for a wildly entertaining heist movie. And then Boots Riley takes a very hard left turn. In this episode of Movies I Give a Fork About, AJ looks at Riley’s colourful, ambitious and increasingly surreal blend of heist comedy, science fiction, political satire and outright absurdism. What begins as a seemingly straightforward story about the Velvet Gang soon becomes something much stranger — and raises an interesting question about how much expectations shape the way audiences experience a movie. AJ digs into the film’s ideas about capitalism, exploitation, ownership and who actually profits from the things people create, while celebrating its extraordinary costumes, saturated visual style and a Keke Palmer performance that provides a much-needed human centre as everything around her becomes increasingly bizarre. But ambition and originality don’t automatically create cohesion. With tonal shifts, conceptual leaps and enough ideas for several different movies, I Love Boosters becomes a fascinating example of what can happen when a filmmaker swings for the fences — and perhaps tries to hit every ball at once. Is it a heist movie? A political satire? Science fiction? Absurdist comedy? Yes. And somehow that still doesn’t fully explain what the f#$k AJ just watched. 🍴 Movies I Give a Fork About   Movies don’t get stars — they get forks. Episode 53 — The Dog Stars (2026): When a Beautiful Movie Leaves You Cold | Fork Rating

Ridley Scott knows how to make a movie. The Dog Stars is visually stunning, beautifully shot and filled with talented performers including Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce and Allison Janney. But is exceptional filmmaking enough when the story never quite makes you care? In this episode of Movies I Give a Fork About, AJ looks at Scott’s post-apocalyptic adaptation of Peter Heller’s novel and the frustrating gap between appreciating a movie’s craftsmanship and actually connecting with it. There are compelling ideas here about grief, isolation, survival and the human need for connection after almost everything meaningful has disappeared. There are also spectacular landscapes, visceral violence and moments of genuine tension. But AJ questions whether the film spends enough time exploring its most interesting idea: when the world as you knew it is gone, is simply staying alive enough? She also looks at Jacob Elordi’s performance, wonders about the very different film Paul Mescal might have made in the role, and takes issue with one filmmaking choice involving Margaret Qualley that feels disappointingly dated. A beautifully made movie from one of cinema’s legendary directors — but does The Dog Stars give audiences enough reason to give a fork? 🍴 Movies I Give a Fork About   Movies don’t get stars — they get forks. Episode 52 — Practical Magic 2 (2026): The Hardest Spell to Break Is the One We Inherit | Fork Rating

Almost thirty years after Practical Magic, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as Sally and Gillian Owens — older, wiser, and carrying the weight of everything their family has passed down. In this episode of Movies I Give a Fork About, AJ looks at why Practical Magic 2 works as more than a nostalgic return to the Owens women. Beneath the witches, curses, spells and fabulous coats is a story about grief, motherhood, female power, and the emotional inheritance passed from one generation to the next. AJ explores the film’s distinctly female lens, the enduring chemistry between Bullock and Kidman, and the idea of magic as a metaphor for the parts of ourselves we are taught to fear or suppress. She also considers where the screenplay loses some of its subtlety — and why the emotional story of the Owens women ultimately proves far more compelling than the film’s more conventional supernatural conflict. Because sometimes the hardest spell to break is the one a family has been casting for generations without even knowing it. 🍴 Movies I Give a Fork About   Movies don’t get stars — they get forks.
