Recognising Abuse, Finding Your Voice & Healing Through Art | Carine Van Hee

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! How do you make sense of a relationship you left years ago, when you didn’t recognise it as abuse at the time? In this episode of Brave Everyday, I’m joined by artist, author and speaker Carine Van Hee for an honest conversation about domestic abuse, finding your voice and rebuilding your sense of self. Carine shares how losing her mum in 2023 led her to recognise painful patterns within her family and finally understand the emotional and physical abuse she had experienced in a past relationship. We talk about leaving with her ten-month-old son, people pleasing, learning to set boundaries, and the courage it takes to share your story. Carine also opens up about how art became a safe space to express everything she once felt unable to show, and how her paintings help others feel less alone. Together, we explore the power of being understood by someone who has lived through similar experiences, and why being brave can mean allowing yourself to be fully seen. An honest, heartfelt conversation about connection, self-discovery and finding hope beyond abuse. Content note: This episode includes discussions of domestic abuse, emotional manipulation, bereavement and workplace bullying. The Courage to Speak Up: Mental Health, Hope & Breaking Generational Silence | Nick, Frontline Collective

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Who looks after the people who spend their lives looking after everyone else? In this powerful and inspiring episode of Brave Everyday, I am joined by Nick, founder of Frontline Collective, who joins me from Australia. Nick has dedicated much of his adult life to some of the toughest and most emotionally demanding jobs imaginable. From serving as a police officer and weapons and tactics instructor to working in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, supporting vulnerable children living with complex trauma, working in prisons and responding to emergencies as a firefighter. Today, he continues his incredible work as a Health and Wellbeing Officer within an industrial emergency response team. These roles demand courage, resilience and compassion, but behind every uniform is a human being, often carrying experiences and challenges the rest of us never see. Nick opens up about his own mental health journey, overcoming adversity, workplace bullying, career changes and the importance of knowing when to put your own wellbeing first. After losing two people close to him to suicide, Nick recognised a gap in mental health support for frontline workers. Rather than waiting for someone else to act, he created a peer support programme to help emergency responders feel supported, understood and able to ask for help. Through Frontline Collective, Nick is now building a community, breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging conversations that could make a life-changing difference. In this episode, we explore: The realities and emotional impact of frontline careers.Mental health, trauma, resilience and overcoming adversity.Workplace bullying and finding the courage to change direction.Suicide prevention, peer support and looking after those who protect us.Self-care, boundaries and rediscovering yourself beyond your career.Breaking generational patterns and finding the courage to express love. The importance of human connection, vulnerability and hope. One of the most moving moments comes when Nick shares how he found the courage to tell his grandfather and father that he loved them, changing the way love is expressed across generations of his family. It's a beautiful reminder that bravery isn't always about running towards danger. Sometimes it's about saying "I love you", "I'm struggling" or "I need help". And when I ask Nick what being brave means to him, his answer is incredibly powerful. Sometimes you don't need to see the whole road ahead. You just need enough hope to take the next step. This is a conversation about the extraordinary people behind the uniforms, the importance of supporting those who support us, and the difference one person can make. I hope it leaves you feeling inspired, understood and reminded that even the strongest people need support. Your story matters. Your voice matters. You matter. The Silent Struggles Behind Success: Marnie’s Story of Resilience, Business & Starting Again

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! What happens when you've built a successful business, only to lose almost everything you've worked for? In this inspiring episode of Brave Everyday, I sit down with entrepreneur Marnie to talk about the reality of success, the struggles people rarely see, and the courage it takes to rebuild your life when everything feels like it's falling apart. Marnie shares her journey of becoming a business owner in her twenties, growing successful businesses, navigating a difficult divorce as a single mum, and facing a devastating legal battle that left her in significant debt and cost her her home. Just when she thought she'd reached rock bottom, she experienced the heartbreaking loss of her dad, who had been her rock and mentor. But Marnie's story doesn't end there. With two young daughters depending on her, she found the strength to keep going, working tirelessly to repay hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt and rebuild her career. Rather than allowing failure to define her, Marnie used her experiences as lessons, eventually building successful businesses again and earning industry recognition. Together, we explore the hidden pressures behind being a business owner, the emotional toll of always appearing strong, the challenges of balancing motherhood and ambition, and the importance of self-belief when life knocks you down. Marnie also discusses her book, Unread Pages: The Silent Struggles Behind Every Success, which shines a light on the personal battles that often remain hidden behind professional achievements. This is a powerful conversation about resilience, entrepreneurship, grief, determination, personal growth and learning to turn setbacks into stepping stones. Because success isn't always about how well things go. Sometimes, it's about finding the courage to start again when you've lost everything. At Brave Everyday, we believe that no matter what you've been through, your story is not over. Follow Marnie here

From Surviving to Speaking Out: Nicola’s Story of Abuse, Recovery & Finding Her Voice

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! In this powerful and deeply honest episode of Brave Every Day, I sit down with Nicola, a former Metropolitan Police officer and passionate advocate for women and survivors of domestic abuse. Nicola shares her journey from working in the sexual offences unit and experiencing the effects of vicarious trauma, to leaving the police, rebuilding her life and later finding herself in an abusive relationship. Together, we talk openly about domestic abuse, coercive control, gaslighting, love bombing, financial and emotional abuse, manipulation, victim blaming and the cycle of abuse. They explore why leaving isn't always straightforward, why survivors can still love their abusers, and how perpetrators use isolation, fear and control to distort someone's reality. Nicola also opens up about the defining moment that finally gave her the strength to leave, while I reflect on my own experience of domestic violence and the importance of breaking the silence and allowing others to support you. The conversation also explores Clare's Law, trusting your instincts, speaking to someone you trust, survivor empowerment and the importance of changing the question from "Why didn't she leave?" to "Why did he choose to behave that way?" This is a conversation about trauma, resilience, friendship, finding your voice and becoming stronger through what you've survived. Most importantly, the message is clear: you are not responsible for someone else's abusive behaviour, and you don't have to suffer in silence. ⚠️ This episode contains discussions of domestic abuse, sexual violence, coercive control, mental health and pregnancy termination. From Survivor to Voice for Change: Cerys’ Story of Courage, Consent & Speaking Out

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! ⚠️ Content warning: This episode discusses rape, sexual violence and domestic abuse. What happens when one of the most traumatic experiences of your life becomes the reason you find your voice? In this powerful episode of Brave Everyday, I sit down with Cerys, a mum, survivor and advocate who is turning an unimaginable experience into a mission to create change. After being raped following a date, Cerys found herself navigating not only the trauma itself, but a justice system that she says left her facing delays, uncertainty and a lack of support. But she refused to stay silent. Cerys shares openly about telling her teenage daughters, the reality of living with triggers, why our conversations around consent and sexual violence need to change, and how speaking publicly about her experience led other women to tell her, “It happened to me too.” This is a conversation about survival, motherhood, courage and what can happen when we use our voices to help someone else feel seen, heard and less alone. Because sometimes bravery isn't about having no fear. It's having the difficult conversation. It's speaking when staying silent would be easier. And it's using what happened to you to help create something better for those who come after you. Follow and support Cerys here & here.

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! What happens when you stop asking, “What do I want?” and start asking, “Who am I becoming?” In this episode of Brave Everyday, I’m joined by Luke John Harrison, coach, speaker and two-time author, for a brilliant conversation about fitness, mental health, identity and rebuilding your life from the inside out. Luke openly shares his journey from drinking, drugs and struggling with his mental health to creating a life built around strength, structure and discipline. We talk about the danger of the all-or-nothing mindset, why consistency beats intensity, using comparison as motivation rather than letting it steal your joy, and why sometimes doing less can actually move you further forward. We also explore social media, parenting, happiness, feeling constantly busy, learning to adapt when life gets in the way and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who inspire you to grow. And Luke leaves us with one powerful question: Who are you becoming? Because lasting change isn't only about what you achieve. It's about the person you become along the way.
