Lessons With Dad is a no-filter podcast about parenting screw-ups, small wins, and the absolute circus of raising kids in real life. Hosted by a 4th-grade teacher, youth sports coach, and dad of three who’s seen it all—classroom chaos, sideline meltdowns, and adults who somehow act worse than the kids. Expect hilarious stories, hard-earned lessons, interviews with family and students, and side conversations about fishing, camping, sports, and sports card collecting. It’s honest, funny, a little unhinged, and guaranteed to make you feel better about your own life choices.

I Gamified My 4th Grade Math Classroom… HERE’S HOW IT ALL COMES TOGETHER!

What if your 4th grade math classroom could give students more choice, more independence, and more opportunities to work at their own pace? 🎮📚In the FINAL episode of my Gamifying 4th Grade Math series, I'm bringing all the pieces together and showing you how I use the County Store, MagicSchool AI, Seesaw, and Khan Academy to give my students more ownership over their learning. Here's how it all fits together:🏪 COUNTY STORE — Students use the Gold they've earned to purchase Item Cards and rewards they actually want.🤖 MAGICSCHOOL AI — I use AI as a tool to help provide additional support, challenges, and opportunities for students who are ready to move ahead.📱 SEESAW — Students can demonstrate their learning and show what they know in different ways.🧠 KHAN ACADEMY — Students have another opportunity to practice skills, build understanding, and continue progressing. The goal isn't to let technology teach my class. The goal is to use these tools to give students more VOICE, more CHOICE, and more CONTROL over how they move through their learning. Some students are ready to move ahead. Some need more practice. Some want an extra challenge. And some need a little help along the way.Instead of forcing every student to move through math at exactly the same pace, I'm trying to create a classroom where every student has somewhere meaningful to go next. And after this entire series, that's probably the biggest lesson I've learned:The teacher provides the map. The student chooses the path. 🗺️🎮This is the final episode of the series, but hopefully it's just the beginning of the conversation about what student-centered, gamified learning can look like in a 4th grade classroom.🎙️ Welcome to the Math Trek! I Built a Website for My 4th Grade Math Class… and It Changed EVERYTHING!

What if your students could see their own progress, track their XP, explore rewards, and choose how they move through your math curriculum—all in one place? 🎮📚That's exactly why I created The Resource Wagon! In this episode of Lessons With Dad, I'm giving you a look inside the website I built specifically to support my gamified 4th grade math classroom. The Resource Wagon brings the different pieces of my classroom game together:🚂 The Resource Wagon — the hub for everything🏆 Leaderboard — students can see their progress⭐ XP & Levels — track their growth and progression🪙 Gold Pieces — earn currency as they level up🎴 Item Cards — choose how to spend their Gold🎯 Student Choice — students have more control over their learning🚀 Work Ahead — students who are ready can move forward at their own paceBut the website isn't really the most important part. The goal is student ownership.I want my students to know where they are, know where they're going, and have opportunities to make meaningful choices along the way.I'm still the teacher. I'm still teaching the standards. I'm still providing the structure. But instead of every student feeling like they're simply waiting for the teacher to tell them what to do next, The Resource Wagon gives them a roadmap. And that's what I'm hoping to create with gamification:The teacher provides the map. The student chooses the path. 🎮🗺️Welcome back to the Math Trek! I Turned Math Assignments Into a Video Game! 🎮 Treks, XP & Gold: Episode 2

What if your students didn't just complete math assignments… but went on TREKS, earned XP, leveled up, collected GOLD, and then used that Gold to buy their own rewards? 🎮🪙That's exactly what happens in my 4th grade math classroom! In Episode 2 of my Gamifying Math Classroom series, I'm breaking down HOW my system actually works from start to finish. Here's the progression:🗺️ TREKS → Students complete their math assignments⭐ XP → They earn Experience Points when they turn in their work⬆️ LEVEL UP → After earning enough XP, they reach the next level🪙 GOLD → Leveling up earns them Gold Pieces🏪 COUNTY STORE → Every Friday after class, I open the store🎴 ITEM CARDS → Students use their Gold to purchase rewards and special itemsBut there's a bigger purpose behind all of this.I'm not trying to bribe kids to do math. I'm trying to give them ownership of their progress.Students can set goals, track their progress, decide when to spend their Gold, and choose which Item Cards are worth buying. And honestly, watching 4th graders debate whether they should spend their Gold now or save it for something better is pretty awesome. 😂In this episode, I'll walk you through the entire system and explain how Treks → XP → Levels → Gold → Item Cards all work together to create more engagement, motivation, and voice and choice in my math classroom.🎮 Welcome to the Math Trek—where we're not just doing math…we're leveling up!Follow: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@lessonswithdadFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61587598196757Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lessonswithdad3/#LessonsWithDad #GamifyMath #GamifiedLearning #4thGradeMath #MathTeacher #ClassroomGamification #StudentEngagement #StudentChoice #TeachingMath #TeacherLife

How I Got My 4th Graders Excited About Math!

What if your students stopped asking, “Do we have to do this?” and started asking, “How do I level up?” 🎮In this episode of Lessons With Dad, I'm kicking off a new series about something I've been building in my 4th grade math classroom: a gamified learning experience.Instead of simply completing assignments, my students go on Treks, earn XP, level up, collect Gold Pieces, and eventually use that Gold to purchase Item Cards and other rewards. But the real reason I created this system isn't because I wanted to turn my classroom into a video game.I wanted my students to take more ownership of their learning.I wanted to give them more voice, choice, motivation, and opportunities to see their own progress while still doing the hard work of learning 4th grade math.In this first episode, I'm explaining WHY I decided to gamify my classroom, what I was hoping to accomplish, and the problem I was trying to solve. And this is just the beginning.🎮 In the episodes that follow, I'll break down the entire system—including Treks, XP, Levels, Gold, Item Cards, challenges, student choice, and what I've learned along the way.I'm not trying to make math easier. I'm trying to make kids WANT to play the game.Welcome to the Math Trek. 🚀➕📚Follow: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@lessonswithdadFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61587598196757Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lessonswithdad3/#LessonsWithDad #Gamification #Teaching #4thGrade #MathTeacher #Education #StudentEngagement #GamifyYourClassroom #TeacherLife
