Why Every Request Feels Urgent to a People Pleaser

Your mom has called five times. Your best friend is in labor. Both of them matter to you, and you can't be in two places at once. So how do you decide which one gets you? Most advice for people pleasers says to stop worrying about what everyone thinks and just say no. But if you're a harmonizer, helping people feels good, and you'd honestly rather have more time and energy so you could help everybody. In this last episode of the Harmonizer Series, Kim and Coach Suzette talk about discernment: seeing clearly, then deciding wisely. They get into why every request can feel urgent, why the loudest signal tends to win, and how to tell what's actually yours to carry. IN THIS EPISODE: • What discernment is, and why it comes after honesty and self-awareness • Why someone else's disappointment can feel like an emergency • The relief loop: why fixing their discomfort feels like fixing yours • Feelings are information, and information isn't the instruction • Why swinging from "yes to everything" to "no to everything" doesn't help either • How to tell whether something is actually yours to carry • Questions that widen the frame before you decide • What deserves the most weight: responsibilities, values and the people closest to you • The practice: get clear on your values, time block, and talk it through with someone YOUR PRACTICE: Give yourself some time to think about what matters most to you: the people you want to feel loved and important, the responsibilities that are truly yours, and maybe a hobby that keeps landing on the back burner. Journal about it if that's how you think, or talk it through with a friend who asks good questions. Then try time blocking. When the things that matter have a place on your calendar, it gets much easier to see when something new won't fit, and much easier to say so. READY TO GO DEEPER? Why You Notice Everyone's Mood But Your Own (The Brain Science of Self-Awareness)

You can tell someone's upset before they've said a word. You notice who's bored in he meeting, who didn't like that comment, and when your husband answers you with two words instead of ten. So you might think of yourself as pretty self-aware. But are you aware of yourself, or mostly of everybody else? In this episode, Kim and Coach Suzette talk about self-awareness for harmonizers and people pleasers: what it actually is, why the automatic yes gets there before you've checked in with yourself, and what to do when you pause and come up blank. IN THIS EPISODE: • Why noticing the room and noticing yourself are two different skills • The small space between the ask and your answer, and why it's so short for harmonizers • Why your brain loves patterns, and how the automatic yes gets faster with practice • What to do when you pause and have no idea what you feel • Affect labeling: why putting a name on a feeling helps • Self-awareness versus rumination, and why curiosity beats criticism • Noticing a feeling doesn't obligate you to act on it • Why people can't know you if you don't know yourself • The practice: a short end-of-day journal, plus one line of gratitude EPISODE CHAPTERS: 00:00 — Aware of everyone, or aware of yourself? 00:54 — Kim retakes the quiz 01:36 — The fourth episode in the Harmonizer series 01:51 — Awareness pointed outward 02:30 — "Do you have a headache?" 03:16 — Ignoring a feeling vs. not noticing it 04:01 — What self-awareness actually is 04:21 — The automatic yes, and the flicker before it 06:21 — The space between the ask and your answer 07:57 — Knowing everyone's opinion but your own 09:55 — Your brain loves patterns 12:03 — Bringing the thought into your conscious mind 14:14 — When the pause goes blank 15:27 — Noticing doesn't mean you have to say no 17:21 — "You two have no idea what you feel" 19:11 — Guilt, and taking on what isn't yours 21:49 — You're already feeling it 22:28 — Notice it, name it, then decide 22:48 — Self-awareness vs. rumination 24:50 — Curiosity instead of self-criticism 27:13 — Information without judgment 28:40 — Getting included in the equation 29:50 — Rediscovering what you enjoy 31:58 — Why self-awareness is bigger than people pleasing 34:37 — Getting in tune with yourself 35:10 — The practice 38:30 — Add a gratitude piece 39:08 — The series so far, and what's next YOUR PRACTICE: At the end of the day, pick one moment that didn't feel quite right — a time you said yes too fast, said "I don't care" when you did, or wished you'd spoken up. Write down what happened (bullet points are fine), what you noticed in yourself, and one other way you could have responded. Then finish with one line of gratitude. It doesn't have to be every day. You're exploring, and there's no reason to be harsh with yourself about it. READY TO GO DEEPER? Why It's Hard to Be Honest With Yourself (The Brain Science Behind "It's Fine")

Somebody asks where you want to eat and you say it doesn't matter. Then you're halfway through the meal wishing you'd said what you actually wanted. You weren't lying to them. You just handed over information that wasn't quite true, and now you're the one paying for it. In this episode, Kim and Coach Suzette get into self-honesty: what it actually takes to know what you feel, want and need, and why people pleasers are so quick to edit that before anyone else hears it. IN THIS EPISODE: • Why self-honesty is bigger than not telling lies • The five things you have to discover: feelings, wants, motives, limits and values • What "it's fine" and "I don't care" are usually standing in for • Why your brain got so good at editing — repetition, discomfort, and the relief that follows • Why making someone else feel better makes you feel better, and why that's worth admitting • Information isn't instruction — knowing what you want doesn't mean you have to have it • Your truth gets a seat at the table. It gets one vote. • The pendulum swing, and why you'll be bad at this before you're good at it • Why the prefrontal cortex is what lets you hold everyone's needs at once, including yours • The practice: catch yourself saying it's fine, and ask whether it actually is EPISODE CHAPTERS: 00:00 — What a people pleaser has the hardest time saying 00:38 — Do you know your fear pattern? 01:15 — The third one in the Harmonizer series 01:49 — Turning the question around: what's true for me? 02:48 — Why we edit ourselves in the first place 03:29 — Am I pretending this doesn't bother me? 05:31 — They learned who you are from what you taught them 06:13 — It's fine. I don't care. It didn't hurt my feelings. 06:59 — You can't make an honest choice with information you won't let yourself have 07:22 — How do I know what I want if I've never asked? 09:03 — Feelings, wants, motives, limits, values 09:34 — The word that makes harmonizers flinch 10:40 — Information isn't instruction 11:24 — A seat at the table, and one vote 11:48 — The pendulum, and why you'll be bad at this first 15:38 — How does the brain get so good at editing? 16:35 — What harmonizers are actually after 18:25 — Your brain also learns from discomfort 19:28 — "Maybe" instead of no, silence instead of disagreement 22:46 — How long does this take? 25:13 — Making them feel better makes you feel better 26:34 — Short-term relief versus long-term cost 26:47 — Holding everyone's needs at once 28:03 — Will I start seeming selfish? 28:51 — Kindness informed by truth 29:48 — The questions to start asking 31:17 — We don't owe everyone every truth 32:30 — The practice 32:56 — Coming next: discernment YOUR PRACTICE: Don't try to be more outspoken. Don't try to say no more often. Just listen for the places where you automatically say "it's fine," "I don't care," "it doesn't matter," or "I had no choice" and when you catch one, stop and ask yourself whether that's actually true. Then ask two more: what am I feeling right now, and what do I want? You don't have to do anything with the answers yet. Start by letting yourself have them. Why You Assume Someone Is Upset With You (The Brain Science of Mind Reading)

You had the whole conversation before they said a word. You knew the tone, you knew the face they'd make, and by the time you actually talked to them you'd already softened what you were going to say — because of a reaction that never happened. In this episode, Kim and Coach Suzette get into mind reading: what your brain is actually doing when it decides what someone else thinks, and how to tell what you know from what you filled in. IN THIS EPISODE: • What mind reading is, and the moment reading the room turns into reading minds • Why your brain fills gaps with predictions — and why that's the efficient thing for it to do • Why a story you made up can feel so completely certain • Negativity bias, and why the gap gets filled with the worst version by default • Why harmonizers mind read more than most people, and what it costs them • The loop: notice a cue, interpret it, take responsibility for it, adjust yourself • How mind reading quietly confuses the person on the other end • Asking for clarity — and why believing the answer is the part most people skip • The three-negatives, three-positives exercise Suzette used in relationship coaching • This week's practice: what do I actually know, and where did my brain fill in? EPISODE CHAPTERS: 00:00 — A whole conversation they were never in 00:47 — Do you know your fear pattern? 01:15 — The second one in the Harmonizer series 02:34 — Brains don't like gaps 03:41 — Certain doesn't always mean correct 04:22 — Where gathering information turns into mind reading 05:18 — "She's quiet, so she must be upset with me" 05:46 — Not every pattern repeats itself 06:04 — Keep reading the room. Stop reading the minds in it. 06:25 — Why something you made up feels so convincing 07:38 — The snap decision, and the pause that's available after it 08:58 — Prediction is efficient. Confusing it with fact is the problem. 09:22 — What changes when you predict the positive 10:24 — Attention turned outward, and how much there is to process 11:54 — When someone's mood becomes your problem to solve 12:40 — The loop: notice, interpret, take responsibility, adjust 13:34 — How mind reading confuses the other person 14:09 — Ask for clarity, then believe the answer 14:57 — Separating what you know from what your brain added 16:27 — The party, the deep conversation, and the story you told 17:12 — Three negative readings, then three positive ones 18:46 — We're making up a story anyway — make up a better one 19:26 — Benefit of the doubt without toxic positive thinking 20:13 — Are you a worrier, or a mind reader? 20:29 — Pause, wait, and get okay with not knowing 21:20 — What thinking the worst costs your body 22:03 — This week's practice 22:48 — Coming next: honesty for harmonizers YOUR PRACTICE: The next time you catch yourself deciding what someone thinks, feels, or means, stop and ask yourself two things: What do I actually know? And where has my brain filled in the gaps? Then ask for clarity when you can — and when the person answers you, take them at their word and keep going. If you're stuck waiting on facts you don't have yet, come up with three positive explanations alongside the negative one your brain handed you first. READY TO GO DEEPER? What Is a People Pleaser? (The Pattern Behind the Auto-Yes)

She's the one who remembers your birthday, smooths over the awkward moment, and never makes anything harder than it has to be. And underneath all of that, she's worn out. In this episode, Kim and Coach Suzette open a brand-new series on the Harmonizer — the people-pleaser pattern from the Fear Profile Quiz — and unpack what separates real kindness from kindness that costs you. IN THIS EPISODE: • What a people pleaser actually is, and why "nice" is only half the story • The one thing that decides whether kindness is a gift or a fear pattern: your motivation • The harmonizer checklist — the auto-yes, the room scan, the edited sentence, the over-explaining • Why harmonizers so often end up worn out, disappointed, and quietly resentful • How your brain builds this pattern through repetition and prediction • Where harmonizing comes from — natural wiring, family roles, and what epigenetics says about both • The real gifts of a harmonizer, and the moment each gift tips into something unhealthy • Why "should" is the word to listen for in your own head • This week's practice: get curious about the harmonizer in you EPISODE CHAPTERS: 00:00 — Meet the woman everyone loves having around 00:49 — Do you know your fear pattern? 01:12 — A new series for the Harmonizer 02:30 — Why we called it a fear profile quiz 03:17 — What is a people pleaser, really? 04:37 — We all have a little harmonizer in us 05:22 — The motivation is what makes it people pleasing 06:42 — Values vs. approval 08:09 — Growth is uncomfortable, and that's normal 10:01 — The harmonizer checklist: do you recognize yourself? 14:06 — Worn out, disappointed, resentful 15:00 — When kindness starts losing its effectiveness 18:07 — Good on the outside, disappointed on the inside 20:31 — Where this comes from: wiring, family roles, epigenetics 22:39 — Your brain is pattern-based 25:03 — Prediction: walking in already knowing your job 26:38 — Repetition, pathways, and neuroplasticity 29:03 — The real gifts of a harmonizer 30:04 — When the gifts overextend 34:05 — Kindness as a choice instead of a compulsion 35:25 — This week's practice: get curious 36:16 — Coming next: mind reading THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE: Get curious about the harmonizer in you. This week, notice the moments when someone else's feelings, needs, opinions, expectations, or reactions start carrying more weight than your own. You don't have to do anything differently. Just ask yourself two questions in the moment: What do they want, and what do I actually want? Both matter. READY TO GO DEEPER? The 9 Thought Patterns Behind Negative Self-Talk

If a friend called and told you she'd blown it, you'd be gentle with her. Then you do the same thing yourself and think, what is wrong with me? There's one person most of us are never that kind to. In this episode, Kim and Coach Suzette break down negative self-talk — what it actually is, where the patterns came from, and the nine automatic negative thoughts (Dr. Daniel Amen calls them ANTs) that do most of the damage. IN THIS EPISODE: • What counts as negative self-talk — and why it's broader than being hard on yourself • Where these patterns come from: what you heard, and what you decided about yourself • Why your thoughts are not always true, even when they feel like facts • How a single thought changes your body chemistry — heart rate, stress hormones, all of it • The nine ANTs: All or Nothing, Less Than, Just the Bad, Fortune Telling, Mind Reading, Guilt Beatings, Blaming, If Only, and Labeling • Why "every should is a little hammer" — and what guilt beatings cost you • Why accurate thinking works better than positive thinking • The lens shift: reading your life through your biggest cheerleader instead of your worst day • Why everyone thinks they either have all nine or none of them EPISODE CHAPTERS: 00:00 — The one person you're never kind to 01:11 — What counts as negative self-talk 02:00 — Where these patterns come from 03:54 — Your thoughts are not always true 05:22 — Every thought is chemistry 06:36 — Meet the ANTs 08:07 — All or Nothing 09:18 — Less Than: the comparison trap 10:38 — Just the Bad 11:03 — Fortune Telling 12:29 — Mind Reading 13:28 — Guilt Beatings: the shoulds 14:20 — Blaming 15:00 — If Only / I'll Be Happy When 15:30 — Labeling 15:49 — This week's practice 17:01 — Accurate thinking over positive thinking 18:46 — Why we all deny having them 20:14 — The five fear profiles 21:20 — What's coming for Harmonizers 22:22 — Just notice, and keep going THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE: Notice which ANTs speak the loudest to you. That's the whole assignment. You don't have to fix them, argue with them, or squash them this week — just meet the ant where it is, notice it, and keep going. Why You Feel Worse When You're Actually Getting Better

You finally started doing the right things — and instead of feeling lighter, you feel like you're coming apart. Nobody warns you about that part. In this episode, Kim and Coach Suzette walk through the messy middle of change: why growth can feel like failing, what an extinction burst is (your brain's one last fit before a new pattern takes hold), and four tools to keep going until the new pattern becomes your new normal. IN THIS EPISODE: • Why the middle of real change feels like going backwards — and what's actually happening in your brain • Seeing your own patterns clearly is progress, even when it feels terrible • Why the people who love you sometimes push back when you start to grow • Suzette's setback story: mold, Lyme, and grieving the work she thought was wasted • Ruts in a muddy field: how your brain deepens its patterns, good or bad • The extinction burst — the surge of cravings, doubt, and "let's just quit" that shows up right before a new pattern sticks • Why "I'll NEVER do that again" language makes the burst stronger • Boundary guilt: what that feeling is signaling, and why boundaries can stay flexible • Four tools for the messy middle: name it, expect the surge, move your body, find support that shares your values EPISODE CHAPTERS: 00:00 — Opening: Doing the right things and feeling worse 00:47 — Welcome to Unafraid Living 00:59 — Do you know your fear pattern? 01:22 — Everyone's talking about the brain right now 02:11 — When the middle of change feels like failing 03:17 — Why people push back when you start to grow 05:09 — Suzette's story: mold, Lyme, and grieving a setback 08:12 — Crying in the parking lot? There's hope 08:57 — Ruts in the field: how your brain deepens its patterns 09:54 — Crying in the grocery store and snapping at your kids 10:32 — Change a little at a time, over and over 11:03 — The mess IS the middle of the rewiring 12:17 — Driving in snow: why new patterns take deliberate thinking 13:23 — "It won't work for me" and other couch-potato beliefs 14:32 — Your brain optimizes for predictability 15:01 — Growing pains, self-sabotage, and the shame that makes people quit 16:55 — Giving in to the ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) 17:43 — Boundary guilt: the 10:30 rule and staying flexible 21:21 — The extinction burst: your brain's one last fit 23:31 — Sugar cravings, speaking up, and other bursts in the wild 26:37 — Caution: absolute language makes the burst stronger 28:24 — How to keep on keeping on 29:23 — Tool: name it to engage your thinking brain 30:13 — Tool: expect the surge (bring an umbrella) 31:05 — Tool: regulate the body and match the mood 32:29 — Tool: support that shares your core values 33:36 — The burst peaks, drops, and the new normal arrives 34:00 — This week's practice: just notice 34:36 — Closing thoughts THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE: Just notice the discomfort of growth when it shows up this week. You don't have to fix it. Name what you're feeling — the messy middle, the extinction burst, whatever term you'll remember — breathe through it, match your body to the emotion, and keep going. And if you've set a boundary, remember it's your boundary. It's okay to be flexible with it. READY TO GO DEEPER? Why "Self-Care" Isn't Enough (Relief vs. Regulation, Explained by a Brain Coach)

You take the bath. You open the book. You go for the walk. And somehow, by Monday afternoon, you feel just as depleted as you did on Friday. Sound familiar? In this episode, Kim and Coach Suzette explain the missing layer underneath self-care: the difference between relief (which is real and good) and regulation (which is what your nervous system is actually asking for). Learn three tools that make the relief last — breath, movement, and co-regulation — and one small practice you can add to what you already love this week. IN THIS EPISODE: • Why "all the self-care" can leave you still running on empty • Relief vs. regulation — the distinction most people never get taught • Heart-focused breathing and how it changed Suzette's blood pressure (and her whole emotional life) • Movement that matches your emotion — a run for anger, a rock for sadness, a dance for amped-up joy • Co-regulation: why your nervous system settles fastest in the presence of someone calm • The reason you default to scrolling or snacking when you're stressed (it's not willpower) • How to layer regulation onto the self-care you already love — no giving anything up • Watering the leaves vs. watering the roots: the metaphor that reframes the whole thing • This week's practice: keep the bath, add the breath, and let your body feel gratitude EPISODE CHAPTERS: 00:00 — Opening: The layer underneath the relief 00:52 — Welcome to Unafraid Living 01:04 — Do you know your fear pattern? 01:27 — Introducing today's topic: relief vs. regulation 01:51 — Why self-care alone leaves you still running on empty 03:19 — What Suzette learned about emotional regulation from HeartMath 04:05 — Your nervous system is always scanning for safety 04:42 — Tool #1: Heart-focused breathing and coherence 05:31 — How the heart and brain work in tandem 06:20 — Why physical regulation makes emotional regulation easier 07:33 — Tool #2: Movement that matches the emotion 08:20 — Rocking, swaying, and what a crying baby teaches us 09:06 — Tool #3: Co-regulation and the calm of someone you trust 10:32 — Recap: breath, movement, co-regulation 10:55 — Why isolation makes stress heavier 11:41 — We're not hacking your brain, we're training it 12:17 — Layering regulation onto relief you already love 13:35 — Why a bath helps — and what makes it help more 14:35 — Why you default to scrolling when you're stressed 15:25 — The dopamine hit before the scroll even starts 16:09 — This week's practice: add breath, movement, and gratitude 17:20 — The wife/husband example: switching the focus 18:12 — Wrap-up practice 18:26 — Relief is real. Regulation goes deeper. 18:39 — Closing thoughts THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE: Keep doing the self-care you already love — the bath, the walk, the book, the music. Just add three small things underneath it: a little movement that matches how you feel, a few slow breaths (exhale longer than the inhale), and one thought of something you're genuinely grateful for. That's the regulation layer. Do it inside your normal wind-down this week and see what shifts by Sunday. READY TO GO DEEPER?
