    Life's Gonna Be Alright

Send us Fan Mail Sometimes nothing around you has completely changed yet. But somehow, you know the sun is coming up. In this episode of UNLOADED, Michael shares a memory from his Army days during a field training exercise. After being assigned the 2 a.m. security watch on an unexpectedly freezing night without the proper cold-weather gear, there was only one thing he wanted to see: The sun. Hours later, before the temperature had meaningfully changed, the first light appeared on the horizon—and something inside him changed immediately. He knew warmth was coming. That memory becomes a metaphor for the difficult seasons of life Michael and Shannon have spent the last several episodes discussing. Sometimes the storm hasn't ended. The weight hasn't disappeared. The problem isn't completely resolved. But you finally see movement. The first light. The first step downhill after carrying a heavy ruck uphill. And sometimes that small psychological shift is enough to remind you that where you are right now isn't where you'll remain.  Michael shares why these are the moments he doubles down on journaling—not just documenting the painful days, but recording when things start to get better. Those pages become evidence he can return to during the next difficult season: I've been here before. I got through it. Things changed. The conversation then turns toward one of the simplest ways Michael and Shannon reconnect with the present moment: gratitude. Not for something enormous. For another morning. Working eyes and ears. Food in the refrigerator. A safe place to sit. Coffee outside while the world wakes up. Family. Relationships. And sometimes a 135-pound dog who's pretty damn excited that Dad came home.   Life will get heavy again. The tide will change again. That's part of it. But sometimes it's worth stopping long enough to recognize: The sun is coming up. You're home. You're safe. And life's gonna be alright.

You Are Not Just a Number

Send us Fan Mail Sometimes the weight doesn't disappear gradually. Sometimes something moves. After several weeks of difficult conversations on UNLOADED, Michael finally finds himself able to say something different: “I'm in a pretty good place.” In this episode, Michael and Shannon explore what happens on the other side of the difficult seasons they've spent so much time discussing. What happens when the tide finally turns? When something that felt stuck starts moving? When you wake up one morning and realize that somehow—you feel lighter? Michael shares how making a decisive move on something he'd been contemplating created momentum in his own life. Then, just days later, an opportunity he believed was gone unexpectedly resurfaced. The outcome is still unknown. But something changed. There was movement.   That experience leads the conversation somewhere deeper: value. What does it feel like when another person immediately recognizes something in you that others may have taken for granted? And perhaps more importantly—how often do we do that for the people around us? Michael shares the answer he once gave when asked what he hoped people would say about him as a leader. It wasn't about results, accomplishments, revenue, or authority. He wanted the people he'd been entrusted to lead to know they were important to him.  From there, Michael and Shannon discuss leadership, workplace culture, profit, people, and the damage that can occur when employees begin believing they're nothing more than a number collecting a paycheck. Because companies have to make money. Results matter. Performance matters. But people matter too. And sometimes people don't leave a company they care about. They leave leadership they can no longer endure.

    When the Mind Goes Quiet

Send us Fan Mail What happens when the voice in your head finally stops talking? Most of us know that voice. It analyzes. Questions. Replays conversations. Predicts what might happen next. Gets angry. Defends us. Scares us. And sometimes it simply refuses to shut the hell up. In this episode of UNLOADED, Michael and Shannon pick up a question left hanging from their previous conversation: Is it actually possible to be without thought? Michael shares how his understanding of that question changed after his experience in Colorado and the journey that followed. He discusses The Untethered Soul, the question of who we really are beneath our names, accomplishments and roles, and the conscious decision he made nearly six years ago to begin creating the human being he wanted to become.  Pasted markdown The conversation moves deeper into meditation and Michael's experience of reaching moments where the internal chatter disappears completely—no argument with himself, no replaying yesterday, no worrying about tomorrow. Just breath. Just awareness. Just presence. Shannon explores the other side: thought isn't the enemy. We need it to communicate, solve problems, make decisions, and navigate life. The challenge may not be eliminating thought, but recognizing when useful thinking crosses the line into being overcome by thought and emotion.  Pasted markdown Michael also shares one of the simplest practices he uses when that happens: Stop. Breathe. Come back. Sometimes one intentional breath is enough to interrupt the noise and return our attention to what is happening right now.  Pasted markdown From there, Michael and Shannon explore meditation, transcendence, enlightenment, and why none of it needs to be a destination. For Michael, it's an ongoing practice—a way to return to “ground zero” before stepping back into everything life demands.  Pasted markdown And next episode, the conversation finally goes back to where much of this journey began: Colorado.

    The Power of Acceptance

Send us Fan Mail What happens when you've carried something long enough that fighting it becomes heavier than the thing itself? In this episode of UNLOADED, Michael reflects on several difficult weeks and the process of finally reaching a place of genuine acceptance. Not pretending everything is okay. Not excusing what happened. Not avoiding the anger, frustration, fear, sadness, or sense of being wronged. Accepting that this is where things are—and deciding what comes next. Michael and Shannon explore why trusted people in our inner circle matter, especially those willing to tell us something we may not want to hear. Sometimes the greatest support isn't advice or agreement. It's having someone who knows us well enough to listen, offer another perspective, and let us work through the rest on our own. The conversation then turns to a seemingly simple phrase that hit Michael much harder than expected: “I'm really trying to give you some grace.” That statement forces Michael to examine something deeper: the amount of himself he pours into relationships, what happens when he no longer has the bandwidth to keep doing it, and whether every relationship deserves the same amount of his time and energy. Rather than reacting in the moment, he sits with it. And eventually something changes. The emotional charge begins to disappear. The situation hasn't changed—but his relationship with it has. Because acceptance doesn't take away our ability to act. It gives us back the ability to choose. Pour in. Pull back. Adjust the relationship. Change direction. Or simply allow things to be what they are. We're human beings. We get to choose. And before signing off, Michael and Shannon mark another milestone in the UNLOADED journey: more than 500 cumulative downloads.

    The Weight We Create

Send us Fan Mail Life can feel heavy. Stress. Pressure. Responsibilities. Fear. The constant noise inside our own heads. But how much of that weight comes from what's actually happening—and how much comes from the way our minds interpret it? In this episode of UNLOADED, Michael and Shannon step back from the idea of “the weight we carry” and ask a more uncomfortable question: Are we sometimes creating some of that weight ourselves? Drawing from philosophy, psychotherapy, mindfulness, and personal experience, they explore the stories we tell ourselves, our tendency to imagine worst-case scenarios, and the enormous power our thoughts and emotions can have over how we experience everyday life. Michael shares how the Stoic idea that “we suffer more in imagination than in reality” became especially relevant during his own recent difficult experience—and why returning to the present moment helped keep his thoughts from turning an already difficult situation into something even larger. The conversation also explores what being present actually means. Michael shares a simple breathing practice and reflects on seven days at a Buddhist monastery without a phone, watch, clock, or other modern distractions. Shannon offers another perspective: perhaps the goal isn't to eliminate our thoughts and emotions at all, but to recognize them, accept that we're human, and learn when to bring our attention back to what's actually happening around us. And then the two discover something they don't completely agree on. Can we truly learn to live predominantly in the present moment—or will the natural noise of the human mind always pull us away? That conversation continues next episode.  Buzzsprout Summary Is life really as heavy as it feels—or do our minds sometimes add weight that isn't actually there? Michael and Shannon explore stress, perception, overthinking, mindfulness, and what it actually means to live in the present moment. Michael shares lessons from Stoic philosophy and his Buddhist practice, while Shannon challenges whether being “ever present” is even realistic for the human brain. By the end, they discover they may not entirely agree. And that's where the next conversation begins.
