FILP Podcast

Friends In Low Places (FILP) is an Irish midlife podcast about that stage of life where your back goes out more than you do. Hosted by four friends navigating life after 40, it’s a funny, honest and slightly cynical look at relationships, marriage, dating then and now, parenting, ageing, health, money, friendship, nostalgia and modern Irish life. Not self-help and not stand-up comedy — just real conversations, Irish humour, shared experience, and laughing at midlife realities once the dust finally settles. Website: www.filppodcast.com

Episode 27: The Things Nobody Warned Us About Getting Older

Nobody warned us that getting older would involve having strong opinions about parking, mattresses, restaurant noise levels and what time we should be home. This week, Sean and Niall are joined once again by Carmel Ryan Leahy to discuss the things nobody warned us about getting older and the strange little changes that somehow creep into everyday life.Reading glasses in every room. Taking three days to recover from a night out. Getting excited about a quiet weekend. Choosing restaurants based on how easy they are to park at. And suddenly understanding the appeal of a good garden centre. But when did all these things become important to us?We ask whether our increasingly questionable habits are simply part of getting older or a sign that we've completely given up. We also look at the things that are genuinely better about being around 50, including caring less about what other people think and being perfectly happy to say no to things we don't fancy doing. Then comes The Great Midlife Trade-Off. Would you rather have a brilliant concert with nowhere to sit or an average one with a comfortable seat? A fantastic restaurant with terrible parking or an average one where you can park outside? And would you take your 25-year-old body back if it meant having your 25-year-old brain as well? Finally, we agree on the FILP Top 5 Signs You're Getting Older:Not caring what people thinkNeeding reading glassesGoing to bed earlyHaving a routineTaking longer to recover after a night outSo are we actually getting older and wiser, or just becoming increasingly comfortable with being boring? And more importantly, what's the one thing you do now that your 25-year-old self would be absolutely horrified by?Let us know in the comments. Episode 26: The Older We Get…Wiser or Weirder

Are we actually getting wiser as we get older… or are we just getting more comfortable with being a bit weird? This week we’re joined by Carmel Ryan Leahy, our first female guest and someone we’ve known since our secondary school days so she arrives with more than 30 years of potentially damaging information about some of us. With all five of us now around the 50 mark, we get into the habits, petty annoyances, questionable opinions and everyday behaviours we’ve somehow convinced ourselves are completely normal. Do you care less about what other people think as you get older? Are there things you really should know how to do by now? What would your family say is weird about you? And does getting older actually make you wiser or just more certain that everyone else is wrong? Along the way there are confessions, uncomfortable revelations and the discovery that some of the things we thought everybody did are apparently very much not normal. Carmel also brings a different perspective to FILP for the first time, although any hope that our first female guest might bring a bit of maturity to proceedings disappears fairly quickly. Mostly, it’s five old friends having the sort of conversation you can have once you reach an age where pretending to be normal feels like far too much effort. So, the older you get… wiser or weirder? Episode 25: FILP Top 10 Greatest Irish Sportspeople

Ireland has produced some unbelievable sportspeople. The problem is, we now have to agree on the greatest ten of all time. And this debate got so heated that Aaron somehow managed to pull his hamstring mid-episode 😂 We attempt to create the definitive FILP Top 10 Greatest Irish Sportspeople across boxing, football, rugby, golf, horse racing, athletics, cycling, GAA, snooker and more. But what actually makes someone the greatest? Is it medals and trophies? Dominance? Longevity? International recognition? Their importance to Irish sport? Or those moments when seemingly the whole country was watching? We start with our contenders before trying to cut the list down, with each of us getting a lock, a cut and a wildcard save. Then comes the difficult bit: putting the final ten in order. The question then becomes: where do they rank and who takes the No.1 spot? There are some fairly strong disagreements, some big names don't make it, and at least one sporting injury occurs without anybody actually playing sport. Tell us who we got criminally wrong and give us your own No.1 in the comments. Definitive according to four lads sitting around arguing. Other opinions are apparently available. Episode 24: Return of the TEDI 2: They'd Never Get Away With That Now

Six months after our first Return of the TEDI episode, we're heading back to the TV, films and adverts of the 80s and 90s, including quite a few we somehow left out the first time. Friends, Father Ted, Glenroe, The A-Team, Knight Rider, Baywatch, ALF, Bosco, Wanderly Wagon and the Milk Tray Man all come under review as we decide what still works, what has aged surprisingly well and what hasn't a hope of being made today. We also remember when television was genuinely a shared experience: Italia '90, The Late Late Show and those moments when seemingly everyone in Ireland had watched the same thing the day or night before. We build the ultimate night in of television from our youth in the FILP TV & Film Draft. One comedy. One drama. One film. One game show. One advert. The Return of the TEDI Quiz is back, testing what we remember about theme tunes, adverts, films, characters and TV shows from the era. So was television genuinely better when we were growing up or are four middle-aged men just looking back through very heavily rose-tinted glasses? What TV show, film or advert from your childhood deserves one more comeback? Let us know in the comments.
