    Shakedown (1988)

    This week on Jake and Pete’s Movie Talk, we’re heading into the sleazy streets of 1980s New York City for Shakedown (1988), starring Peter Weller and Sam Elliott! What starts as a gritty courtroom drama about a drug dealer accused of killing an undercover cop quickly spirals into a glorious mess of crooked police officers, shady drug kingpins, exploding cars, roller coasters, and some of the most questionable action sequences ever committed to film. Jake is absolutely in love with this forgotten slice of 80s cinema, while Pete is left wondering how half of these scenes made it past the writers' room. Along the way, we discuss Peter Weller's questionable romantic decisions, Sam Elliott's magnificent mustache, the dangers of fishing at Coney Island, and why the NYPD apparently kept hand grenades rolling around in the trunks of their cars.     Resident Evil (2026)

    This week on Jake and Pete’s Movie Talk, we’re heading into Raccoon City for Resident Evil (2026), a brand-new take on the classic video game franchise. A medical courier called Brian is having a bad enough night before he gets sent on an emergency delivery through a snowstorm. Then the zombies turn up. Then the dogs start sprouting tentacles. Then things get considerably worse. We get into Zach Cregger’s mix of horror, action and comedy, Austin Abrams’ wonderfully panicked performance, the fantastic ominous score, some properly horrible creature design, and whether Brian represents the modern evolution of the action hero—or whether he’s just a bit of a soyboy. There are exploding heads, dubious padlocks, questionable gun skills, a remarkable amount of swearing, and possibly the worst medical delivery shift in human history.     Halloween III: Season of the Witch

    This week on Movie Talk Roundtable, Jake, Pete, and Brandon take on Halloween III: Season of the Witch — the bizarre franchise detour where Michael Myers disappears and is replaced by a distant acoholic dad. We get into John Carpenter’s abandoned anthology idea, Tom Atkins’ unlikely leading-man energy and Silver Shamrock’s questionable business practices.     This week on Movie Talk Roundtable, Pete and Jake are joined by Brandon to talk about one of his all-time favorites in the horror genre: Candyman (1992). We get into Tony Todd’s surprisingly limited screen time, Virginia Madsen’s standout performance, Philip Glass’s killer score, the real-world history of Cabrini-Green, and whether Candyman actually works as a horror villain once you start asking too many questions about the rules.     Children of the Corn (1984)

    Jake, Pete, and Brandon kick a month of horror classics with Children of the Corn from 1984! For Jake and Brandon, this one comes with a lot of history. Back in college, they spent an entire day marathoning seven Children of the Corn movies instead of doing anything remotely normal with their lives. Twenty years later, they return to Gatlin to find out whether the original still holds up. Along the way, the boys ask the important questions: how are these children maintaining thousands of acres of corn? Why does Burt keep leaving Vicky alone? And what happens if one of these kids was born on February 29th? There’s plenty of nostalgia, some genuine appreciation for Isaac and Malachai and the gradual realization that maybe some movies are better left in your rose colored memories.     Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

    This week on Movie Talk Roundtable, Jake, Pete, and Brandon take on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Pete brings the Trek background, Brandon comes in as the outsider asking why half of this stuff makes any sense, and Jake tries to figure out whether the movie is actually about Khan, Kirk getting old, or Ricardo Montalbán’s completely real chest. We get into the Kobayashi Maru, Kirk’s refusal to button his shirt, the movie’s obsession with Moby-Dick, and whether Khan is actually the super-intelligent villain the movie keeps telling us he is.     The Bees (1978)

    Jake and Pete are back with one of the strangest disaster movies of the 1970s: The Bees. What starts as a story about killer bees quickly turns into government corruption, corporate greed, secret hitmen, military intervention, bizarre science, questionable pheromones, John Saxon being John Saxon, and a swarm of bees that may actually be smarter than everyone in the movie. Pete accidentally discovered this one while trying to watch The Swarm, and somehow that mistake turned into one of the most entertaining bad movies we’ve covered. Grab a drink, stay away from the hive, and join us as we try to make sense of The Bees from 1978.

    Top 5 Disaster Movies

    This week on Movie Talk Roundtable, Jake and Pete are counting down their Top 5 Disaster Movies. From alien invasions and killer bees to pandemics, tornadoes, pilots with a tummy ache and the literal end of the world, the boys cast a pretty wide net on what qualifies as a disaster. Pete accidentally watches the wrong killer-bee movie and decides it belongs on his list anyway, Jake defends Reign of Fire as a legitimate disaster movie, Airplane somehow sneaks into the conversation, and we finally answer the most important question of all: which movie kills the most people? Strap in. Things are about to get messy.
