Interview with Edgar Bello Gonzalez and Eduardo Bello Gonzalez

How can artificial intelligence help farmers conserve water and protect their crops during droughts? In this interview, Leland McFarland of Small Business Trends sits down with Edgar Bello Gonzalez and Eduardo Bello Gonzalez, twin brothers from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and winners of Zoho's first-ever "From the Ground Up" AI Hackathon. Their winning project, Dos Ojos, combines AI, satellite imagery, drone technology, and simple text messaging to help farmers identify crop stress and make smarter irrigation decisions. Inspired by their experiences growing up in Mexico, where water shortages affected families, farmers, and entire communities, the brothers developed a solution designed to make advanced agricultural technology accessible to small farmers. During the interview, we discuss: How their experiences with water shortages inspired Dos OjosHow AI analyzes satellite and drone imagery to detect struggling cropsWhy they chose bilingual SMS messaging instead of complicated softwareHow farmers can use the technology without owning a droneWhat it was like competing in and winning Zoho's AI HackathonTheir plans to bring Dos Ojos to more farmersThe brothers also share the surprising story of how they entered the competition and what comes next as they work to turn their prototype into a practical solution for agriculture. Amazon’s AI Seller Assistant Gets Smarter With Memory, Agents and 24/7 Automation

Amazon is pushing deeper into AI-powered selling tools, and this episode of Small Business Spotlight breaks down what the latest changes could mean for entrepreneurs and small businesses selling on the platform. One of the biggest updates is persistent memory for Amazon Seller Assistant. The AI can now remember details such as pricing patterns, inventory cycles, business goals, and previous conversations, allowing it to provide more personalized recommendations over time. Instead of starting from scratch with every interaction, Seller Assistant can maintain context as sellers move between Seller Central, Amazon Quick, and tools such as Anthropic’s Claude. Amazon is also introducing 24/7 AI workflows that can monitor a seller’s business even when they are not logged in. Sellers can create automations using natural language to track inventory, pricing, product ratings, account health, and competitors. These workflows can provide recommendations, prepare actions for approval, and maintain an audit trail of what the AI is doing. We also look at Amazon’s new Selling Partner plugin, which brings Seller Assistant data and capabilities into Amazon Quick and Claude. Sellers can access listings, inventory, sales analytics, and performance information directly inside these AI tools, with Amazon saying Claude can be connected in about 60 seconds without coding. Another major development is the ability to build specialized AI agents in Amazon Quick. Businesses could create separate agents for pricing, restocking, product listings, marketing, finance, and other operational tasks. Amazon is also offering eligible primary selling account holders a free 12-month Quick Plus subscription, along with free access for two additional coworkers. Learn more about the Amazon Quick offer: https://quick.aws.com/sn?offer_type=sp-quick-promo&trk=accelerate_kn Later in the episode, we head to Reddit to discuss some of the challenges small business owners are facing, including entrepreneurs questioning whether business ownership is right for them, companies generating huge revenue without feeling profitable, websites attracting visitors who still do not buy, and the curious number of pickleball businesses appearing for sale. It’s a packed episode covering AI automation, Amazon selling tools, profitability, conversion problems, and the realities of running a small business. AI Shopping Takes Off as SBA Reworks 8(a) and the Couch Economy Grows

AI shopping, changing consumer habits, government contracting, and real-time business data are all reshaping how small businesses compete—and this episode of Small Business Spotlight breaks down what owners need to know. We start with Meta and Stripe’s new integration that brings Stripe Link into Meta’s AI shopping assistant, Muse. With hundreds of millions of consumers already using Link, the technology could make it easier for AI agents to complete purchases on behalf of shoppers. For small businesses, that opens the door to faster checkout experiences and potentially new customers, while also raising questions about payment technology, security, and how businesses prepare for agent-driven commerce. Next, we look at major changes to the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program. The agency is placing greater emphasis on defense-critical industries and updating how businesses qualify for the program. Small manufacturers, shipbuilders, ammunition suppliers, and other defense-related companies could see new opportunities, but businesses will also need to understand the updated application and documentation requirements. Visa is also tracking a major shift in consumer behavior it calls the “couch economy.” More shopping, entertainment, dining, and subscription spending is moving online as consumers prioritize convenience and at-home experiences. We explore what that trend could mean for small businesses looking to strengthen their digital sales, delivery, subscription, and marketing strategies. We also cover Salesforce’s new Slackforce Surfaces, which brings live Salesforce data directly into Slack. The goal is to let teams create dashboards, reports, and other business insights without constantly switching between apps. Finally, Visa’s latest research reveals a major challenge facing AI commerce: trust. While consumers are increasingly comfortable using AI assistants, far fewer are ready to let those assistants handle financial transactions. We examine why trusted payment brands, security, and transparency could become critical as AI-powered shopping expands. Plus, we highlight startup and small business deals from FreshBooks, Zendesk, Typeform, and Notion, and dive into real-world discussions from the small business community on Reddit—including demanding clients, business-owner burnout, protecting company knowledge, and deciding where to invest limited resources.
