    Episode 6 – What We Leave Behind

    Every journey changes us. Sometimes we notice it immediately. Sometimes it takes years. In Episode 6 of SALLA – Stories from the Middle of Nowhere, the journey turns toward a simple question: What do we leave behind? The stories in this series began with very different people — a craftsman, musicians, a writer, families shaped by history. Matti Luukinen devoted much of his life to building and restoring accordions. Unto Ek preserved the North through words. Kimmo Blom carried his voice into music. Stalingrad Cowgirls took their music far beyond Finland. And Jaco Pastorius changed the language of the electric bass. Different lives.Different dreams.Different generations. Yet their stories all led, in one way or another, back to the same place. Salla. For me, this journey also became personal. Years ago, I studied accordion building in Ikaalinen. What first seemed like learning a craft eventually became part of a much longer tradition — knowledge passing from one pair of hands to another. That journey later led to the Kauri Accordion Project, an international collaboration between Finland and New Zealand. Three unique wooden accordions were created from New Zealand kauri timber. K1 – Birth travelled to the Dargaville Museum in New Zealand.K2 – Growth remained in Ikaalinen, Finland.K3 – Departure travelled to New York with accordionist Kevin Friedrich. Three instruments. Three destinations. Three stories. But all of them began in the same workshop. Perhaps that is what craftsmanship really leaves behind. Not something that lasts forever... but something capable of carrying a story into the future. And perhaps places do the same thing. We may leave them. But they do not always leave us.     SALLA – Stories from the Middle of Nowhere - Episode 5 – When Borders Changed

    Some places change because time passes. Others change almost overnight. Episode 5 of SALLA – Stories from the Middle of Nowhere explores the moment when war changed not only the lives of people in Salla, but the map itself. Before the Second World War, the municipality extended much farther east. Under the Moscow Peace Treaty of 1940, large areas of eastern Salla were ceded to the Soviet Union. Approximately 49 percent of the former municipality's territory was lost, including the old municipal centre and the original Sallatunturi. For the families who lived there, the changing border meant evacuation, separation from their homes and eventually the realization that many would never return permanently. But memories crossed the new border. Village names survived. Stories were passed to children who had never seen the places their parents and grandparents remembered. After the wars came reconstruction. Salla rebuilt, and life continued in a landscape carrying far more history than its quiet forests reveal today.     Episode 4 – Unto Ek Some people belong to a place so completely that, after a while, it becomes difficult to separate the person from the landscape. In Episode 4 of SALLA – Stories from the Middle of Nowhere, the journey moves away from music and deeper into the forests of northern Finland. This episode tells the story of Unto Ek — writer, border guard, hunter, outdoorsman and a man who seemed to live partly in a world of his own. I met Unto many times when I was younger. To me, he always remained a mysterious figure. He knew the forests, the animals and the old ways of the North. He wrote about a world that was already beginning to disappear, preserving parts of northern Finland through words. Unto was also connected to my own family in a very personal way. He brought my mother her first Karelian Bear Dog, Vili. Vili lived for around fifteen years. He was gentle, loyal and deeply attached to my mother — but like many Karelian Bear Dogs, he could also be fiercely protective when necessary. After Vili died, Unto later brought her another bear dog. Small memories like these are part of why Unto never became just a name in a book to me. He was a real person from my childhood. A man of the forest. A storyteller. And somehow, still a mystery.     Music doesn't belong to places. People do. But sometimes a place quietly shapes the people who later shape the music. Episode 3 of SALLA – Stories from the Middle of Nowhere follows musical journeys that connect a small community in northern Finland to a much wider world. Kimmo Blom.Nova Scotia.Stalingrad Cowgirls.Jaco Pastorius. Different musicians. Different generations. Different journeys. Nova Scotia emerged from Salla in the late 1980s, with Kimmo Blom among its members. Years later, another band from the same small northern community, Stalingrad Cowgirls, would take its music far beyond Finland — touring internationally and sharing stages with major international rock acts. And behind this journey remains the discovery that started the entire SALLA project: an unexpected connection found while researching Jaco Pastorius. Standing in Salla today, it is easy to hear only the wind. To watch reindeer crossing a quiet road. To see cranes returning every spring. Or the first snow settling across the forest.     Episode 2 – Matti Luukinen: The Master Builder Some stories are carried through words. Others are carried through what we leave behind. In Episode 2 of SALLA – Stories from the Middle of Nowhere, the journey turns to my father, Matti Luukinen — accordion builder, tuner and craftsman. His workshop was a world of its own. Accordions were built, repaired and tuned. Musicians came and went. Coffee was shared, stories were told, and as a child, I watched this world from close by. Matti's craftsmanship became known far beyond Salla. Instruments arrived at his workshop from across Finland and the Nordic countries, and his work earned respect among fellow accordion builders and musicians. He had learned the demanding craft of accordion tuning from master tuner Aki Lievonen — knowledge passed from one craftsman to another. Matti died in 2007 before he could fulfil a promise to pass that knowledge on once more. But craftsmanship has a way of continuing. Years later, I would find myself at a workbench of my own, building accordions and becoming part of another extraordinary journey. This is the story of a craftsman, a workshop, and a legacy that did not disappear when the tools fell silent.
