Ep30: Why You Struggle to Make Lasting Change: 5 Hidden Reasons

Why is it so hard to turn good intentions into lasting change? This episode of the Living Midlife Well podcast explores five hidden reasons you struggle to follow through, keep repeating old habits, and find it difficult to make the changes you really want in life. If you’re tired of starting over, losing momentum, or feeling frustrated with yourself, this episode will help you understand what might be getting in the way and how to begin finding a more sustainable way forward. In this episode, you’ll discover: Why struggling to change isn’t necessarily a lack of willpower or discipline. How underlying beliefs and fears can hold you back from doing what matters to you.Why stress and exhaustion can make it harder to follow through on your intentions. How trying to meet other people’s expectations can distract you from what you really want. Why attempting to change too much at once can leave you feeling overwhelmed. How relying on willpower alone can make lasting change more difficult. One simple way to start identifying what is getting in your way, without criticising yourself. Why is lasting change so difficult? Making a change involves more than deciding what you want to do differently. Your beliefs, energy levels, responsibilities, and everyday patterns can all influence your ability to follow through. When you understand these underlying barriers, you can stop treating every setback as a personal failure and begin working with yourself rather than constantly fighting against yourself. This is particularly relevant in midlife, when competing demands, stress, and changing priorities can leave you with less time and energy for the things that matter to you. Learning to make sustainable changes can help you rebuild self-trust, make progress towards your goals, and create a life that feels more fulfilling and enjoyable. Ready to turn your good intentions into lasting change? Join the Good Intentions to Lasting Change Masterclass inside the paid Living Midlife Well Member Community. Find out more about the Good Intentions to Lasting Change Masterclass starting 31/10/2026 Just one thing to try: Think of one change you have been wanting to make but haven't followed through on. Instead of immediately asking yourself what you should do differently, ask: What might be getting in my way? For now, simply notice what comes up. Awareness is a useful first step towards change. Loneliness in Midlife: Why We Feel Disconnected and How to Reconnect

Loneliness in midlife isn't always about being alone. You can have a partner, family, friends and a busy life, yet still feel disconnected or wonder where you belong now. As our relationships, responsibilities, identities and priorities change, we may find ourselves questioning where we fit, who we feel connected to, and what meaningful relationships look like for us today. In this episode of Living Midlife Well, discover why loneliness and social isolation can occur in midlife, what contributes to feelings of disconnection, and how to navigate life changes while creating meaningful connections, support and a renewed sense of belonging. If you're feeling disconnected or questioning where you belong now, listen in for insights and practical ways to reconnect with yourself and others. Why Do We Feel Lonely or Disconnected in Midlife? Midlife can bring significant changes that affect our relationships, social lives and sense of identity. Children leave home, relationships end, loved ones pass away, friendships drift and familiar social circles change. We may also begin to question roles, beliefs and relationships that once felt right for us. At the same time, work, family responsibilities and everyday pressures can leave us with little time or energy for connection. Sometimes we withdraw because we're overwhelmed or exhausted. At other times, we realise that our needs, interests and priorities have changed, and we're looking for a different kind of connection. This episode explores the physical, psychological and social factors that can contribute to loneliness and disconnection in midlife, including: Life transitions and social isolation: How divorce, bereavement, an empty nest, changing friendships and moving to a new place can affect our sense of connection and belonging.Hormonal changes and social connection: How perimenopause, menopause and age-related hormonal changes may influence mood, sleep, energy and our capacity to socialise. The hidden impact of independence: How beliefs such as “I have to do this on my own” or “Nobody understands me” can make it difficult to ask for and receive support.Changes in identity and belonging: How changing roles, responsibilities and priorities can leave us questioning where we fit and who we want to be in this next stage of life.Loneliness, stress and wellbeing: Why feeling isolated can affect our emotional and physical health, and how supportive relationships can help us navigate life's challenges. How to Build Meaningful Connections and a Sense of Belonging Feeling connected isn't about having the biggest social circle or saying yes to every invitation. It's about having relationships in which you feel supported, accepted and valued. Midlife can be an opportunity to reconsider what connection means to you now. You may want to deepen existing relationships, build new friendships, let go of connections that no longer serve you, or find people who share your interests and values. Discover three practical ways to begin reducing loneliness and creating a greater sense of belonging in midlife: Learn to ask for and receive support. Recognise the beliefs and habits that may be keeping you from accepting help and allowing others to get closer.Build meaningful connections that suit your life now. Focus on relationships that support your wellbeing, and find ways to connect that fit your current needs, time, energy and interests.Use time alone to restore your energy, not avoid your feelings. Give yourself space to reflect on what you need, what has changed and the relationships you want in your life. You'll also discover a simple Just One Thing action to help you take a small step towards greater connection this week. Ep28: What's Really Draining You? Why You're Exhausted Even When You're Not That Busy

Why are you feeling so tired, stressed and overwhelmed, even when you’re not doing that much? Discover the hidden causes of midlife stress and exhaustion, and how understanding what drains your energy can help you create a life you actually enjoy. Subscribe to Living Midlife Well for practical ways to reduce stress, restore your energy and enjoy everyday life more. Have you ever wondered why life feels so exhausting, even when everything looks fine on the outside? The answer may not be that you’re doing too much, but that too much of your time and energy is going into things that leave you feeling depleted. This episode explores what’s really draining your energy in midlife, why being busy isn’t necessarily the problem, and how the way you’re living can affect your stress levels, emotional capacity and enjoyment of life. You’ll discover: Why you can feel exhausted even when you’re not that busy — and why the amount you do isn’t the whole story. The hidden causes of stress and energy depletion, from expectations and obligations to constantly reacting to what needs doing. The cost of living in a draining way, including having less patience, less mental space and less energy for the people and activities that matter to you.The difference between a full life and an overloaded life, and why what you spend your energy on matters. Why doing less isn’t always the answer — and how living in a way that reflects what matters to you can make a difference. Why your capacity matters, particularly in midlife, when your energy, circumstances and priorities may be changing. You don’t necessarily need to overhaul your life or eliminate everything that takes effort. A useful starting point is to become more aware of what is consuming your energy, what genuinely matters to you, and whether you have the capacity to keep living the way you are. JUST ONE THING TO CONSIDER Ask yourself: What in my life is taking more from me than it gives back? You don’t need to solve everything today. Start by noticing what drains you. That awareness can be the first step towards reducing unnecessary stress and creating more ease and enjoyment in your everyday life. Ep27: “No Fks Left to Give” in Midlife: Freedom or Burnout?

Have you reached the point in midlife where you feel like you have “no fks left to give”? Is this newfound freedom and confidence—or could it actually be burnout, emotional exhaustion or having nothing left in the tank? If this sounds like you, listen to the episode and subscribe to Living Midlife Well for practical ways to rebuild your capacity, reconnect with yourself and enjoy life more. The “no fks left to give” trend has become a powerful expression of midlife freedom, particularly for women. It can represent finally setting boundaries, stopping people-pleasing and refusing to spend your energy on things that no longer matter. There can be something genuinely healthy and liberating about that. But what if sometimes “I just don’t care anymore” isn't freedom at all? What if you're simply exhausted? In this episode, I explore the difference between midlife empowerment and midlife burnout, and ask a more personal question: What is really going on for you? We explore: • Why having “no fks left to give” can sometimes be a healthy part of setting boundaries in midlife • How to tell the difference between conscious choice and emotional exhaustion • Why midlife anger isn't necessarily a bad thing—and what it might be telling you • What could be sitting underneath anger, including hurt, pain and grief • Why menopause and midlife transitions can involve both freedom and loss • The signs of stress-related burnout, including feeling like you have nothing left to give • How chronic stress can contribute to emotional overwhelm, disconnection and nervous system dysregulation • Why simply withdrawing from everything may not address the underlying problem • The question I think matters most: What do you actually want to create for your life? • A simple 4-7-8 breathing and humming practice you can use to help wind down and create a little more calm and recovery You can view the video about this practice here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9Br4XL3KXI This isn't about telling you whether having “no fks left to give” is right or wrong. It's about becoming curious about what your version of it means. Are you finally choosing where your time and energy go? Or are you so depleted that you genuinely have nothing left to give? Sometimes what looks like indifference is actually exhaustion. Sometimes anger is pointing towards hurt, grief or a need for change, and sometimes saying “enough” really is the beginning of creating a healthier, more authentic life. The ultimate goal is to have enough capacity to choose what—and who—you want to give yourself to. If you're in your 40s or 50s and feeling overwhelmed, depleted, disconnected, burnt out, angry or simply done with everything, I hope this conversation gives you a different way to think about what's happening and one small practical step you can take from here. What do you think? Is “no fks left to give” freedom, burnout—or a bit of both? Leave a comment and let's have a conversation. Ep 22: When Someone You Love Is Hurting: How to Comfort and Support Them

When someone you love is hurting, what do you actually say? When a friend, partner, sibling or someone else you care about is going through a difficult time, it can be surprisingly hard to know how to comfort them. You want to help. You want to say the right thing. But you may worry about saying something that sounds superficial, giving unwanted advice, trying to fix the problem—or simply making things worse. The good news is that you don't need to have all the answers to support someone who is hurting. In this episode of Living Midlife Well, we explore how to comfort and support someone you love when they're struggling, including: • Why we find it so difficult to sit with someone else's pain • What to avoid saying when someone is hurting • Why trying to fix someone's problem may not be helpful • How listening can be one of the most powerful forms of support • How to validate someone's feelings without trying to change them • What to say when you don't know what to say • How to ask someone what they actually need • How to create a safe, calm space for difficult conversations • Why you don't have to fix someone's pain to help them The seven simple tools in this episode are designed to help you feel more confident when someone you love is going through a difficult time—while still respecting their experience, their emotions and their choices. And there's one idea I'd particularly like you to take away: You don't have to fix someone's pain to help them. Sometimes, simply being willing to listen, understand and sit beside someone while life is difficult is the most comforting thing you can do. 💬 Let's have a conversation Have you learned anything from your own experience about how to respond when someone you love is hurting? Ep 26: How to Stop the Same Arguments and Build More Connection in Your Midlife Relationship

Building better relationships in midlife isn't just about learning to communicate better — it starts with understanding yourself, your needs, your patterns and what you bring to a relationship. In this podcast, I share 5 lessons I've learned about building better relationships after two marriages, two divorces and a lot of personal growth. If you're ready to stop having the same arguments, reduce relationship stress and create more understanding and connection, this episode will give you five practical things to think about and try. In this episode, you'll learn: 1. Know yourself before you try to change the relationship Understand your triggers, what brings you joy and what you need — and why self-awareness is such an important part of healthy relationships. 2. Listen to understand Learn how to move away from defending, blaming or trying to fix the other person, and instead listen with curiosity to understand what they are really experiencing. 3. Ask and clarify rather than assume Your partner can't read your mind. Learn why asking what someone needs can prevent misunderstandings and reduce unnecessary emotional stress, plus how using “I” statements can help you communicate your thoughts, feelings and needs more clearly. 4. Get comfortable with disagreement Disagreement doesn't have to mean conflict. Explore how you can understand someone's point of view without having to agree with them — and why becoming comfortable with different perspectives can create more connection. 5. Share the relationship load Are you carrying too much, contributing too little, or trying to control how everything gets done? We'll look at people-pleasing, overgiving, sharing the mental and practical load, and allowing both people to contribute. And at the end, I'll give you a simple “Just One Thing” exercise to help you get to know yourself better — including three questions about your triggers, your sources of joy and what you need right now. This episode is for you if... You're in your 40s or 50s and your relationship has changed. Maybe you're in a long-term relationship that's going through a new stage. Maybe you're dating again after divorce. Maybe you're simply ready to stop repeating old relationship patterns and want your relationships to feel less stressful and more supportive. Because better relationships in midlife aren't about finding the perfect partner or avoiding disagreement. They're about becoming clearer about yourself, learning to listen and communicate differently, and creating relationships where both people can contribute, be heard and feel supported. Ep25: 10 Simple Ways to Get Time Back: How to Save Time in Midlife

No time for yourself? If you’re wondering where all your time goes in midlife, the answer may not be that you need to become more productive. You may simply need to rethink what gets your time and capacity. In this episode, I’m sharing 10 simple ways to save time in midlife and get time back — not so you can squeeze even more into your day, but so you can create more space for the things that matter to you, including yourself. Because saving time in midlife isn’t about doing everything faster. It’s about using your time and energy more intentionally, reducing unnecessary effort, and deciding what is actually worth your time. We’ll look at practical ways to: • Stop wasting time on things that don't deserve it • Reduce unnecessary housework • Use multitasking more effectively • Combine activities to save time • Prepare ahead • Create systems that prevent unnecessary tasks • Make better use of waiting time • Make tasks easier to complete • Decide what matters most • Give your most important priorities your time first I’ll also explain why time management in midlife can be different, and why the question isn’t always “How much time do I have?” but “How much capacity do I have?” If you want more time for yourself, more breathing room, and a life that feels easier to live, this episode will give you some simple places to start. The bigger idea? You don't need to work out how to fit everything into your day. You can start by asking: What deserves my time? Ep 24: How to Reclaim Your Time in Midlife: What is Your North Star?

Are you busy all the time, but still wondering if you’re spending your time on the things that actually matter to you? If midlife has left you juggling work, family, responsibilities and everyone else’s needs, this episode will help you step back and ask a more important question: What is my time actually for? Instead of trying to squeeze more into an already-full life, I’ll show you how to work out what deserves your time in the first place. You’ll use three simple questions to uncover what matters most to you, what brings you alive, and how you want your life to feel—and bring those answers together into your own personal North Star. This is a different approach to time management in midlife. Because you can’t meaningfully reclaim your time until you know what you want to use it for. In this episode, you’ll discover: • Why traditional time management may not be what you need in midlife  • How to recognise the difference between the life you’ve inherited and the life that is actually yours • How your values can help you decide what deserves your time • How what you love can reveal what brings you alive and give you clues about your purpose • Why thinking about how you want your life to feel can open up possibilities beyond specific goals • How to create a personal North Star that brings your values, purpose and desired feelings together • Why clarity makes it easier to set boundaries and decide what to say yes and no to • A simple daily practice for choosing how you want to feel each day LINKS MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST Article version of How to Reclaim Your Time in Midlife Reinvent Your Life 21 Day Programme - closed What Is My Life Purpose?
