We share the class nobody wants to take, the evening text that cost a dancer her next competitions, and why we are careful with the sentence "I believe you". Teen Stress and Why Dancers Quit | Handle Teenage Burnout

Between 14 and 16, many teenagers suddenly quit the hobby they have loved for years. We call it the minefield moment: teen stress from school, friends, and phones piles up just as teenagers want more independence. We share the story of a 15-year-old dancer we have taught for ten years. She loved dance, but felt guilty about homework every time she was in class. We talk about teen stress, why dancers quit at 14–16, how AI and phones affect learning, and what parents can do when their teenager wants to stop. Why science backs up what we see in class: The OECD's PISA 2025 study tested fifteen-year-olds around the world. It found that "hasty readers", students who rush and give quick but wrong answers, almost doubled since 2018, and that students feel less family support than in 2022. Pew Research found that 68% of teens feel pressure to get good grades. 0:05 Minefield Moment 1:12 Lily’s Dilemma 5:59 School Pressure Builds 10:42 Teen Stress Data 13:24 PISA and AI 17:32 Learning by Doing 19:33 A Wider Perspective 22:25 Rethinking Priorities 25:12 Hard Decisions Ahead 26:23 When Stress Is Too Much 26:41 Lily Decides to Stop PISA 2025 Results (Volume I): https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/pisa-2025-results-volume-i_73451bc5-en.html PISA 2025 Executive Summary: https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/pisa-2025-results-volume-i_73451bc5-en/full-report/executive-summary_3701b0ef.html Pew Research, Pressures teens are facing: https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2025/03/13/pressures-teens-are-facing Pew Research, Teens, Social Media and Mental Health: https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2025/04/22/teens-social-media-and-mental-health/ Have you had this conversation with your teenager?
