Cheaper Isn't Always Better: Price, Value, and a LinkedIn Comment That Didn't Land | Episode Thirty Seven

Cheaper Isn't Always Better: Price, Value, and a LinkedIn Comment That Didn't Land | Episode Thirty Seven Rob is back from a two-week cruise (no wifi, no signal, bliss) and straight back into it. Someone has publicly called out Fresh Networking as too expensive on LinkedIn. Rob has a lot to say about that — including a punchline the commenter almost certainly didn't see coming. What We Cover The Incident At a recent Fresh Networking event, one of Rob's guests accidentally ended up in an East Midlands Chamber event running at the same hotel. No harm done — they had a great time. What followed was a LinkedIn comment from a regular networking face suggesting the East Midlands Chamber is "much cheaper" than Fresh Networking. Rob responded to the individual privately. Then he recorded this episode. Price Is Not the Same as Value The examples stack up: Aldi vs M&S meal deals, a McDonald's burger vs one from John's House (Michelin-starred, Leicester), Premier Inn vs a proper hotel. In every case, cheaper exists. In every case, cheaper is not better. You get what you pay for — and in some contexts, paying more compounds your return. This isn't a defence of paying more for its own sake. Rob acknowledges bargains exist and luck plays a part. But if you want something to last, something of quality, something that actually moves your business forward — cheap rarely gets you there. What Fresh Networking Actually Costs For £35 + VAT per month (£42 if you're not VAT registered), members get: a two-course lunch for themselves and a guest, drinks included, at a city centre hotel. Plus access to other events at a discount or free, and a bespoke members' chat group. Rob's rough maths: £17.50 per head for a two-course meal with drinks. Bring a client, a supplier, a guest — whoever you want. The Twist Turns out, Fresh Networking and the East Midlands Chamber event cost exactly the same. The individual who made the comparison works for an accountancy firm. Rob leaves that one there. The Second Lesson Don't publicly slag off another business in a networking space. It reflects worse on you than on them. Rob's point: if you think something is too expensive, keep it to yourself. He's not going to go onto LinkedIn and tell people not to use this person's firm — but if the rule of public criticism applies, it applies both ways. Why There'll Never Be a Free Fresh Networking Event Paid events attract people who are genuinely invested. Free events, in Rob's experience, attract people who want a free pastry, a free drink, and to tick a box. Those aren't the people who build real business relationships. Key Takeaway Know the difference between price and value. Know your worth, price accordingly, and don't apologise for it. And if you're going to publicly call out another business's pricing — at least make sure your maths is right first. Interested in Fresh Networking? Rob would love to hear from you. About That Weekly Episode Thing… | Plus, Everything You Need to Know About The Sales Circle | Episode Thirty Six

About That Weekly Episode Thing… | Plus, Everything You Need to Know About The Sales Circle | Episode Thirty Six Last week Rob announced he wouldn't be doing weekly episodes anymore. This week he's back. He finds this funny. More importantly, he's here to tell you everything about The Sales Circle — where it's been, where it's going, and why you should be listening. What We Cover Yes, He's Already Back One week after announcing the end of the weekly schedule, Rob is back with another episode. He clocks the irony immediately and enjoys it. The point stands — episodes will be sporadic from here — but apparently he had something to say. Such is the nature of this podcast. The Focus: The Sales Circle Rob's main creative output is shifting to The Sales Circle podcast. Two reasons: his book The Sales Circle: Part One is either already out or imminent (check his socials for the definitive answer), and the show itself deserves more attention than it's been getting. A Brief History of The Sales Circle The show started around 2021 and relaunched in 2024. Here's how it breaks down by season: Season One — Rob sat down with great business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders to talk about sales, revenue, and growth. Those interviews became the foundation of The Sales Circle: Part One book. Season Two — A shift in format. Rob delivers free sales training in monologue episodes covering objection handling, questioning techniques, follow-up methodology, AI in sales, script writing, telephone sales, and more. If sales is your weak point, this is the season to start with. Season Three (coming soon) — Back to interviews, but with a new angle. Rob wants guests to share the good, the bad, and the ugly of sales. The best thing they've ever sold or been sold. The worst pitch they've ever witnessed or delivered. Real stories, real lessons, no polish. All episodes are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Podcasts, and YouTube — in both audio and video. Key Takeaway Whether you're new to sales or have been doing it for years, The Sales Circle has something for you — interviews from people who've built real revenue, and free training you'd normally pay for. Go find it. Find The Sales Circle on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Podcasts, and YouTube. Look out for The Sales Circle: Part One — the book — on Amazon. Not Goodbye — Just See You When I See You | Episode Thirty Five

Not Goodbye — Just See You When I See You | Episode Thirty Five  A short one — Rob promised it would be, and he means it. Nearly 40 episodes in, nearly a year of weekly episodes, and now a change in how this podcast works. It's not bad news. It's just honest news. What We Cover The Announcement From Bedroom to Boardroom is not ending. Rob is not going anywhere. But the weekly cadence is. He won't be dropping an episode every single Wednesday anymore — at least not as a guaranteed commitment. The reason is simple: his focus is shifting back to The Sales Circle podcast, and recording two shows at full pace isn't realistic. Something has to give, and it's the weekly schedule here, not the podcast itself. What This Actually Means Sometimes episodes might still come out every week — if Rob has something to say, he'll say it. Other times there might be a gap of two weeks, four weeks, or longer. The episodes will arrive when there's something worth recording, not just because it's Wednesday. This podcast was always meant to be an outlet — a place to offload, speak openly, and share what's going on in business life. That doesn't change. The format, the honesty, the unplanned nature of it — all of that stays exactly as it is. The only thing that's different is when you'll hear it. There's one more episode coming next week. After that, the new cadence begins. What To Do Now Don't unsubscribe. More episodes are coming — just not on a fixed schedule. Stay connected with Rob on LinkedIn and across his social platforms so you don't miss announcements. And if you haven't already, follow The Sales Circle podcast — that's where Rob's main creative energy is heading next. Key Takeaway Nearly a year, nearly 40 episodes, and not a single one phoned in. If this podcast has given you something — a lesson, a laugh, a moment of solidarity — then it's done its job. There's more to come. Just on Rob's terms. Animal Media Update: Orders Every Day and Loving Every Minute | Episode Thirty Four

Animal Media Update: Orders Every Day and Loving Every Minute | Episode Thirty Four A few episodes back, Rob introduced Animal Media — his physical media side hustle. He's been getting messages asking how it's going. Here's the honest update. What We Cover A Quick Recap Animal Media is Rob's side project selling DVDs, Blu-rays, mystery boxes, and movie night hampers through animalmedia.co.uk. The idea came from spotting a genuine gap in the market: people are increasingly fed up with streaming platforms — tired of content disappearing without warning, tired of price hikes, tired of having nothing to show for years of subscription fees. Physical media is back, and it's not just nostalgia-driven older buyers fuelling it. Younger people are increasingly ditching their phones and streaming accounts to own their media again. How's It Going? Honestly? Really well. Orders are coming in every day — new customers and returning ones. The website is running, built on Shopify (self-taught from scratch), and Rob is constantly thinking up new products to add. He's expanded the social presence too — TikTok has been there from the start, but Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube are now up and running as well. Is It Profitable? This is where Rob gets honest with himself mid-sentence. Technically, the accountant would say no — not yet. There was significant upfront investment in stock (he's sitting on thousands of units), and those initial costs haven't been fully absorbed yet. But revenue is flowing and the cash position is solid. His framing: not making a loss, generating good cash flow, and the stock will sell. Whether you call that profitable depends on who you ask. Why He's Still Doing It Not because it's his biggest earner — it isn't, and it won't be. Because he genuinely loves it. The marketing, the product development, the Shopify build, the TikTok content — all of it. It feeds back into his main businesses by keeping his skills sharp and his energy up. A hobby that makes money and teaches you things is hard to argue with. Key Takeaway Not every side hustle needs to be a rocket ship. If it generates cash flow, teaches you new skills, and you wake up excited to work on it — that's already more than most people get from their main job. The Sales Circle Book Is Coming — And It's Been Worth the Wait | Episode Thirty Three

The Sales Circle Book Is Coming — And It's Been Worth the Wait | Episode Thirty Three Rob's been sitting on a secret. A new book is nearly ready — the fourth of his career — and this one is different from anything he's put out before. He's finally ready to talk about it. What We Cover The Sales Circle — Part One Rob's long-running podcast The Sales Circle is the foundation for this book. When he launched the show, he sat down with 15 entrepreneurs, business owners, and salespeople — former football club CEOs, founders, business development leaders, and more — to find out exactly how they grew their sales. Those conversations are now being turned into a book. This isn't Rob's thesis on sales (that's Part Two). This is other people's stories, firsthand — what they did, how they did it, what they learned. Rob believes salespeople learn best from great people, and he's been lucky enough to sit down with some of them. At the time of recording, he's a couple of weeks away from finishing the first draft. Revisions to follow, then publication — with a firm target of by his birthday in November 2026. It will be available on Amazon and pre-orders will make a real difference. A Three-Book Series The Sales Circle is planned as a trilogy: Part One (current) — the 15 interviews, in print, with Rob's reflections woven through. Part Two — Rob's own sales training, ideas, and lessons drawn from Series Two of the podcast. His take on what the modern salesperson should be doing. Part Three — more interviews. Not started yet, but the plan is there. Ten Years of Relationship Selling Rob's first book, Relationship Selling, was published in 2017. Next year is its tenth anniversary — and he's planning a full Version 2 to mark it. He's honest: he thinks the original has weak spots, elements that need updating. The anniversary rewrite will fix that. Alongside it sit The Paragon Mindset and A Month to Improve Your Sales, making this new release his fourth published book. What's Next Watch Rob's socials — LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook — for launch announcements. There may be a launch party. And in a throwaway line at the end, he floats the idea that this very podcast might become a book one day too. Key Takeaway Writing a book changed Rob's career when he published Relationship Selling in 2017. A decade on, he's still doing it — still learning, still sharing, still finding new angles. The best thing you can do with what you've learned is get it out of your head and into someone else's hands. The Sales Circle podcast is available on all major platforms and YouTube. Look out for The Sales Circle: Part One on Amazon — pre-orders help enormously. The League Two Striker: Why Letting Good People Go Is Sometimes the Best Move | Episode Thirty Two

The League Two Striker: Why Letting Good People Go Is Sometimes the Best Move | Episode Thirty Two A team member of two and a half years has just left Paragon — on good terms, with a handshake and a thank you. Rob uses it as a chance to talk about one of the harder, quieter parts of running a business: what it actually means to let good people go, and why it doesn't have to be a bad thing. What We Cover People Are Everything Sales is the most important thing in a business. Rob's said it before and he'll say it again. But right behind it are the people. Get hiring wrong and you'll feel it in morale, momentum, and money. Get it right and the business compounds. Recruitment is hard — and so is knowing when it's time to part ways. The League Two Striker Rob's go-to analogy: you're a League Two club, you sign a striker who bangs in 20 or 30 goals a season and drags you up to League One. Brilliant. But in League One they drop off a bit — maybe 10 or 15 goals. You get promoted again, this time to the Championship. Now they're caught out completely. Defenders know how to play against them. They haven't adapted. They're still playing like it's League Two. That's not a failure. That striker did something incredible. They just helped you get somewhere they couldn't follow. The Jamie Vardy Counter-Argument The antidote to the League Two striker problem is Jamie Vardy under Brendan Rodgers. Vardy arrived raw, rapid, running in behind. Rodgers changed him — added technical intelligence, adjusted his movement, made him smarter. That evolution kept Vardy playing at the highest level for years beyond what his natural style alone would have managed. The lesson for team members: adapt, be coached, keep developing. Those who do stay relevant far longer. The Open Door Policy Rob has never stood in the way of anyone wanting to leave. Life changes. People evolve. What someone needs from a job at 24 is not what they need at 28. He's always been honest with people about opportunities — pointing out red flags if he sees them, giving genuine guidance — but if someone wants to go, the door is open. One exception: he won't negotiate against a salary offer. If someone's leaving purely because another company has offered them slightly more money, his answer is effectively: good luck, off you go. The reason? Lifestyle inflation. Earn more, spend more, the gap stays the same, and six months later they want more again. He's seen it happen, been that person himself. It's a cycle he won't be party to. Two and a Half Years For a business of Paragon's size, that's a good run. The team learned from the individual. The individual learned from the team. There's nothing left to give each other. They part ways on good terms — handshake, hug, gratitude — and both move forward. A client asked if they should be worried. Rob's answer: not even slightly. Key Takeaway Good people leave. Sometimes it's your fault, sometimes it's their growth, sometimes it's just time. What matters is how you handle it — and whether you've built something strong enough that one departure isn't the end of the world. Sometimes Settling Is Winning: Why I Took £2,500 Instead of £12,000 | Episode Thirty One

Sometimes Settling Is Winning: Why I Took £2,500 Instead of £12,000 | Episode Thirty One Rob has just settled a debt dispute. He's accepted £2,500 from someone who owed him closer to £12,000. He knows he had the case. He knows he probably would have won. He settled anyway — and he's going to tell you exactly why, and why he'd do it again. What We Cover The Numbers By the time court fees, legal fees, late payment charges, and breach of contract penalties were factored in, the amount owed was approaching £12,000. Rob's solicitors were confident. The evidence bundle had already been prepared and sent to the court. The only thing outstanding was the court fee itself — and Rob kept holding off, hoping the other side would see sense. They didn't. He settled for £2,500. The Evidence Was Overwhelming The debtor had accepted the quote in writing. Agreed to the terms and conditions. Paid the first month's invoice — which, per those same T&Cs, constitutes acceptance of the full agreement. Not a single complaint was raised during the campaign. Complaints only materialised the moment Rob started chasing payment. One allegation — that Rob had changed his T&Cs live on the website while the debtor was reading them — collapsed the moment Rob provided a timestamped record showing no changes had been made since January 2026. The response? Accusations of harassment and threatening behaviour. Why He Settled Anyway Three reasons: The mental load. The dispute was bleeding into everything — his outlook on business, his mood at home, his ability to focus on clients who deserved his energy. That's not a price worth paying for any sum of money. The enforcement risk. Winning in court doesn't guarantee getting paid. These are people with a history of closing limited companies and opening new ones. A court order against a dissolved company is worth nothing. Even a win could have led to months more fighting, bailiff costs, and potentially nothing at the end of it. The opportunity cost. Rob has a full book of clients who love working with him and a spreadsheet of prospects who want to. Six to twelve more months fixated on the wrong people is six to twelve months not spent on the right ones. Closing the Chapter The money landed in the bank the day this episode was recorded. Rob wishes them well — genuinely, he says — and means it in the sense that he hopes never to encounter them again. The chapter is closed. He's moving forward. Key Takeaway Winning isn't always the point. Sometimes the most powerful business decision you can make is to cut the toxic weight loose, take what you can, and redirect your energy somewhere it actually compounds. Your Results Don't Define You: A Letter to My Younger Self | Episode Thirty

Your Results Don't Define You: A Letter to My Younger Self | Episode Thirty GCSE and A-level results season. Rob has a message for anyone who opened an envelope this week and felt their stomach drop — and for anyone who's ever let a set of grades convince them their best days were already decided. Spoiler: they weren't. What We Cover The SATs Test Cast your mind back to Year 6. Remember how enormous SATs felt? The revision, the panic, the weight of it all? Do you actually remember what you got? Rob's point: those results determined which set you went into at secondary school, and that's about it. He argues the same logic applies to GCSEs, A-levels, and — more controversially — degrees. Rob's Own Story He did well at GCSEs. Nine of them, four A's, three B's, two C's (the D in Design Technology was the teacher's fault, he maintains). When it came to A-levels, things unravelled. He missed his first week with tonsillitis — looking back, probably nerves — fell behind immediately, struggled to catch up, and then the real pressures kicked in. No money at home. His father was unemployed and dealing with significant depression. The family was genuinely struggling. When a full-time job came up, it made more sense than studying for qualifications he wasn't sure he even wanted. He walked away. No A-levels, no university. For years he felt like a failure — watching friends go off to study while he swept up at a garden centre, embarrassed and quietly devastated. The University Question Rob has never wanted to go to university, and he's blunt about why. Three years, much of which is wasted. Enormous debt. A degree in a subject the market may not want. He knows people with first-class degrees in business who have a shocking grasp of how business actually works. That's not an argument against higher education — it's an argument for being honest about what it delivers versus what it costs. What He's Built Without It Multiple businesses. A strong reputation in his industry. Skills built through experience, self-study, books, and doing the work. His qualifications don't appear on his sales deck, and no one has ever asked. What got him here was graft, curiosity, and showing up. The Actual Message If you got the results you wanted — brilliant. Keep going. If you didn't — please don't panic. You have forty to fifty years of working life ahead of you. Careers change, people reinvent themselves, and the internet has made self-education more accessible than it has ever been. YouTube, books, the Open University, podcasts — the tools are there. What matters is finding your passion and being willing to put in the work when you do. Key Takeaway Your GCSEs, your A-levels, your degree — they are one small chapter in a very long book. Don't let a set of results at seventeen tell you what the rest of it looks like.
