Fabiana Lian On the Real Business Behind Live Music

Meet Fabiana Lian, who has spent her career behind the scenes of live music and knows what it really takes to put on a show. In this episode, Fabiana shares what she calls the "first chord syndrome." Backstage work can mean technical problems, arguments, rushing around, little sleep and sometimes barely having time to eat. But when the first chord of the show plays, you suddenly remember why you do it, and she believes many backstage professionals and roadies feel the same. We also talk about why there is no glamour backstage. People imagine hanging around artists and drinking champagne. In reality, it's about responsibility, security, riders, hotels, travel, lack of sleep and constantly solving problems. Fabiana explains how promoters decide whether an artist can support a major show. They look at Spotify numbers, social engagement and ticket sales in other markets, but huge Spotify or Instagram numbers don't guarantee ticket sales. You still need to know whether the artist has a real live audience and whether the performance can hold people's attention. Finally, Fabiana asks who the next Metallica will be. She argues that some major festival lineups have become lazy, relying again and again on established names that are already proven to sell tickets. Future headliners are built years earlier through small venues, independent festivals and local scenes. Metallica isn't eternal, and Iron Maiden won't live forever. If the industry doesn't support smaller artists and venues today, there may not be enough headliners tomorrow. John Taylor On Why Great Podcasts Still Struggle to Grow

Meet John Taylor of Act Three Agency, who works with podcasters on one of the hardest parts of the job: getting a good show found. In this episode, John explains why a great podcast can still fail to grow. Most of the podcasters he works with are already making good content. Their problem isn't quality, it's discoverability. He walks through how to position a podcast correctly across YouTube, Spotify, Apple, LinkedIn, websites and other platforms so the content can actually be found. We also talk about how much work really goes into a show. Your podcast is basically a full-time job: creating the episodes alone can take around 15 to 20 hours a week between planning, recording, editing, guests and production. Then marketing and promoting it can become another part-time or full-time job on top of that. John makes the case that YouTube is too big for podcasters to ignore, even if the show is audio-only. Creators can connect their RSS feed, appear on YouTube Music, organize episodes into playlists and make their podcast searchable by people actively looking for answers. Finally, John explains why, if the goal is conversions, he would take 500 interested viewers over 50,000 random ones. Some podcasts only get around 150 views per episode but still generate major revenue, because a small percentage of those listeners turn into high-value deals. Derek Wyn On Why Qualified Views Matter More Than Going Viral

Meet Derek Wyn, founder of Outlier, who thinks about content as a business asset first and a view count second. In this episode, Derek explains why qualified views matter more than total views. Traffic matters, but the right traffic matters more. A video watched by around 300 founders who could realistically buy from you can be a more valuable business asset than a video with a million random viewers. That challenges how most creators measure success. We also talk about how AI is changing what audiences value. AI made information cheap: how-to content is becoming commoditized because AI can generate it so easily. Relationships and access are much harder to fake. Derek explains why podcasts build authority through association, because genuinely talking with credible people says something about your own network and positioning. Derek also shares his take on the YouTube algorithm. Creators obsess over thumbnails, titles, packaging, editing and watch time, but he believes the real breakthrough happens when a new viewer comes back and watches again. If someone keeps spending their time with you, some of those people will eventually spend money with you too. Finally, we give Derek a choice: 5,000 people in the industry or 500 potential customers? He picks 500 potential customers without hesitating, because at the end of the day he's running a business, and traffic eventually needs to turn into customers. Felipe Calegari On Why Translation Isn't Localization (and Why AI Dubbing Isn't Enough)

Meet Felipe Calegari of C Sharp Recording Studios, who helps creators take their videos to new audiences through professional dubbing and localization. In this episode, Felipe explains why translation is not localization. Translation is basically the first draft. Localization goes further by changing references, context, presentation and sometimes even visual elements so the content fits another culture. His Gordon Ramsay example shows how a reference that makes immediate sense in one country may not carry the same meaning in Brazil. We also talk about why language is one of the biggest barriers holding creators back. Felipe says roughly 66% of YouTube's audience doesn't speak English, and points to India and Brazil as massive, highly engaged audiences that most English-speaking creators never reach. Felipe makes the business case too: professional localization can cost much less than producing an entirely new video, while letting creators get more value out of content they've already spent heavily to produce. One production, multiple markets. Finally, Felipe is open about the fact that AI dubbing has already cost him opportunities. AI can transcribe, translate and generate a voice, but it often skips the real localization layer. It can miss cultural references, context and brand-sensitive language, and it can even hallucinate. His preferred model: AI for speed, humans for judgment and adaptation. Nahom From Tech2Cop On Why Useful Videos Beat Expensive Production

Meet Nahom, the creator behind Tech2Cop, a tech channel focused on practical gear, honest reviews and deals that actually save people money. In this episode, Nahom shares one of the most surprising lessons from his channel: a video that took him about 15 minutes to make got roughly 15,000 views in a few days, while some of his earlier videos took two or three months to produce. The difference was not production quality. The quick video gave viewers something immediately useful: a good tech deal that saved them money. We also talk about why being critical makes brands trust you more. Nahom criticized a microphone a company sent him because the mute button was too easy to hit by accident. Instead of damaging the relationship, the brand came back with a newer model and asked him to compare the two. His takeaway: if every product you review is amazing, nobody believes you. Finally, Nahom admits he overspent on his own camera, even though some of his earlier videos shot on an iPhone were already excellent. His advice for a new creator with a $500 budget: use the phone you already own, buy inexpensive lights, get a decent microphone, and start creating. Realistically, you could get started for around $150. Cristi Cotovan On Why Video Editors Should Learn Principles, Not Clicks

Meet Cristi Cotovan of Media Makers Club, a video educator who teaches creators how to edit, record and produce content with tools like Descript, Riverside, Camtasia and Premiere. Instead of teaching people where to click, Cristi teaches why each tool exists and what it is supposed to do. In this episode, Cristi explains why editors should learn principles, not clicks. If you memorize "click here, then click there," you are lost the moment the software changes its interface. If you understand what you are trying to accomplish, that knowledge carries over to any editor, including whatever comes next. We also talk about where AI actually fits into editing. AI can remove filler words and silences and speed up repetitive work, but it still cuts into words, leaves awkward gaps and makes poor B-roll choices. Cristi sums up the human part of the job in one word: discernment. His workflow is simple: let AI do the first pass, then have a human review everything. Cristi also shares the story of the 12-hour Descript course he spent about two months building, only to watch the interface get redesigned shortly afterward. It changed how he teaches. Now he works modularly: answer one problem, create one video, and update it as the software changes. Finally, Cristi explains why tutorial videos don't need views on day one. His videos often start slow, then build traction over time through YouTube search, Google, suggested videos and even AI chatbot recommendations. It's a strong case for search-based evergreen content over chasing instant virality. Renee Bowlin On The Truth About Growing a Small YouTube Channel

Meet Renee J. Bowlin, the creator behind Imperfect on Purpose, a channel documenting what it actually looks like to build as a small creator in real time. Instead of presenting a polished success story after the fact, Renee shares the testing, uncertainty, numbers, confidence struggles, and behind-the-scenes decisions while she is still figuring YouTube out herself. Renee came to YouTube after turning 50, following a career that included 18 years at UPS, upper management, and building a real estate business. She describes the transition as a midlife awakening and a decision to use the next chapter of her life to build something new instead of staying with what was already predictable. In this episode, Renee explains why she believes there are no universal rules to YouTube. Creators are given a finish line, like subscribers and watch-hour requirements, but much of the advice they follow comes from people who grew in completely different versions of the platform. Her approach is to test, collect enough data, and build a strategy around what her own channel is actually showing her. We also talk about one of the hardest realities for small creators: you can control your business model, how consistently you show up, what you work on, and the goals you set, but you cannot control who YouTube decides to show your video to. Renee shares why that distinction changed the way she thinks about growth, metrics, and what creators should actually focus their energy on. Renee is also building the Crow’s Nest Creators Association, a community designed for creators who want to share real metrics, real problems, and practical solutions with people who are actively going through the process themselves. Jorge Moss On Why Honest Reviews Matter More Than Brand Deals

Meet Jorge Moss, the creator behind Watch Yourself Jorge, a watch reviewer and content creator who has steadily expanded from YouTube into writing, brand work, and industry events. His channel is built around honest watch reviews, personality-driven presentation, and a growing role inside the wider watch community. Jorge creates the channel with his best friend Terry, an award-winning filmmaker who handles shooting and editing, while Jorge presents everything on camera without scripts. Their process is intentionally streamlined, and they can sometimes record, edit, and upload a video in the same day. We talk about why personality keeps viewers coming back even when the original topic brought them in, how vulnerability can strengthen a community, what actually matters in a useful watch review, and how brands started sending products to the channel within the first several months. Jorge also explains why transparency is critical when brands are involved, how networking at industry events helped him build credibility, and why creators are often better off making what they genuinely want to make instead of copying what everyone else is already doing.
