    The Ghost of the Mountains

The Ghost of the Mountains: Unraveling the Secrets of the Snow Leopard What does it take to understand and protect one of the world’s most elusive predators? In this episode, I speak with Dr. Kulbhushansingh Suryawanshi, an ecologist, conservation scientist, and author who has spent almost two decades studying snow leopards in the wild. He is Director of the India Program at the Snow Leopard Trust and a scientist with the Nature Conservation Foundation. He is also a Fellow of the British Ecological Society, a CIFAR Fellow, and a National Geographic Explorer. Our conversation examines the science behind the snow leopard’s IUCN Vulnerable status, population estimates, and the definition of “mature" individuals. We also take a broader look at this mysterious and aesthetically remarkable feline species—what science has revealed about snow leopards, the challenges they face in the wild, the progress made in their conservation, and what the future may hold for them. Dr. Suryawanshi holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and Conservation from the Nature Conservation Foundation and Manipal University, an M.Sc. in Wildlife Biology and Conservation from the National Centre for Biological Sciences and WCS-India, and a B.Sc. in Zoology from Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. His professional distinctions include the British Ecological Society’s Southwood Prize (2013), National Geographic Young Explorer recognition (2011), a fellowship at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (2022), and a CIFAR Fellowship (2023–2028). He became a Fellow of the British Ecological Society in 2025. From the Himalayas of India to the Mongolian Plateau, Dr. Suryawanshi’s work offers a rare perspective on what long-term field science can teach us about wildlife, people, and coexistence. https://www.kulbhushansingh.com Paws Mongolia Podcast https://www.pawsmongolia.org Theme music: “Selenge” by Céline Dessberg.
