S4 Ep. 4: AI and Counseling

Season 4: Current Issues: Gender in Parenting, Trauma, AI in Counseling, and Social Media In this episode, hosts Caleb Martin and Cathy Chang are joined by Josh King, former Director of Communications at Perimeter Church and current Marketing Director at an AI software company, for a thoughtful conversation about technology, faith, and discernment. Together, they explore the growing presence of AI in everyday life and counseling spaces, considering both the opportunities and concerns that come with it.  Throughout the discussion, Josh helps listeners better understand what AI is, how it can be used helpfully, and where discernment is needed. They reflect on how Scripture guides the way we approach new technology, the tension between using AI as a tool versus being shaped or controlled by it, and how fear can sometimes influence the way we respond to change. The conversation also touches on the significance of being embodied image bearers of God and how some longings beneath our use of AI may ultimately point to deeper desires that Christ wants to fulfill.   We pray this episode encourages you to thoughtfully engage technology with wisdom, discernment, and dependence on the Lord. We invite you to explore the resources section for further reflection, and if you find yourself longing for deeper connection, guidance, or support, prayerfully consider reaching out to a counselor here.   Resources:   Why AI Will Not Suffice for Mental Health Counseling: A Christian and Biblical Perspective – Dan Brown (Blog)   Chapters (00:00:05) - Everyday Redemption(00:00:57) - A message about Perimeter Church's new communications director(00:01:53) - Post-Perimeter: The Future of Manufacturing(00:03:25) - Counseling Podcast: Artificial Intelligence(00:06:23) - What Exactly is AI?(00:12:49) - Fear of AI in the Church(00:16:37) - Is AI the Future of Journalism?(00:22:46) - What Principles Should We Apply to AI?(00:27:31) - The Human Question(00:29:46) - A New Paradigm for Human Relations with Technology(00:33:35) - Guardrails for Our Kids' Digital Life(00:40:14) - A Christian Counselor on AI

S3 Ep. 2: Guilt and Shame

Season 3: Common Issues In Counseling In this episode, hosts Caleb and Cathy are joined by Jimmy Kim, Executive Leader of Family Transformation at Perimeter, for a thoughtful discussion on guilt and shame. Jimmy speaks from his own background as a Korean American to shed light on how shame and grace can feel so difficult to walk through. Together, they explore how scripture and our union with Christ speaks so directly to our shame. They address the difference between guilt and shame, the ways shame can grow when we hide the difficult parts of our stories, and how our culture or upbringing can impact our experience. They also discuss the feeling that God’s favor must be earned and why grace feels so difficult for some to embrace. Jimmy reminds us that there is no part of our story unknown to God and that nothing can separate us from His love. We pray this episode offers encouragement and freedom, reminding you that Jesus is our perfect advocate who willingly took on and defeated our shame at the cross. If shame feels overwhelming or persistent in your life, we invite you to consider connecting with a counselor here. Season 3: Common Issues In Counseling In this episode, hosts Caleb and Cathy are joined by fellow Perimeter counselor Ashley Cable for a conversation about chronic illness. Drawing from Ashley’s own lived experience of walking through multiple ongoing illnesses, the three discuss what it looks like to cling to truth and trust God in circumstances that feel long, painful, and uncertain. Throughout the conversation, they touch on applying the truths of Scripture through experiencing chronic pain, learning to lament with God in what Ashley calls her “bathroom floor days”. Walking through themes from Romans 8, they reflect on what it means to sit honestly with the Lord and redefine flourishing—not by our standards, but by God’s. They also offer practical reflections for those who suffer, as well as for helpers and loved ones who want to walk alongside them with wisdom and compassion.  We pray this episode brings comfort, hope, and a reminder that God is near in the waiting.
