Time Under Tension

TUT Radio is a podcast about weight loss, behavior change, and building a healthier life without pretending you’re someone you’re not. Hosted by father-and-son coaches Brian and Vincent of Time Under Tension, TUT Radio challenges many of the beliefs that have made weight loss unnecessarily difficult: that you need more discipline, that your favorite foods are the problem, or that success requires following a restrictive diet for the rest of your life. Instead, we explore the psychology behind the way people eat—the habits, cravings, environments, memories, and experiences that shape our relationship with food—and how understanding those forces can help us create meaningful, lasting change. We’ll talk nutrition, training, obesity, metabolism, food behavior, and the science of weight loss. But more importantly, we’ll talk about how to apply that science to a real human life.  The goal isn't merely getting someone to lose weight; it's designing the path so they don't have to abandon it once they get there.

A Simple PSA Blood Test Changed Everything For A Healthy 54-Year-Old

Thanks for listening to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Text your questions or comments here! He felt perfectly healthy, stayed active, and still found out he had stage four metastatic prostate cancer. That’s the gut-punch reality our friend Jeff shares, and it’s why we wanted a straightforward, non-medical-advice conversation that helps real people take action. A PSA test is just a blood draw, but Jeff’s PSA trend and follow-up imaging changed the trajectory of his life, and it raises a hard question: how many men are waiting for symptoms that may never show up early?  We talk through the moment he discovered the results through an online portal, the late-night Googling that followed, and the complicated task of telling a spouse and two daughters without letting cancer become the only thing the family thinks about. Jeff also explains androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in plain English: how testosterone suppression can “pause” prostate cancer, and what it feels like to live with side effects like hot flashes, fatigue, brain fog, mood shifts, and fast changes in strength.  From there, we get practical about prostate cancer fitness and nutrition during treatment. Jeff shares what went wrong when he tried to train like nothing had changed, how injuries forced a smarter approach, and why he now prioritizes mobility, lighter weights, tempo, and long-term function. We also dig into macro tracking, protein for muscle retention, carbs for energy, and monitoring cholesterol, heart disease risk, and bone health nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and K2.  If you’re a man over 40, or you love one, this is your reminder to take screening seriously and advocate for your health. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with one takeaway you’re acting on this week. One Doctor's Belief That Would Undoubtably Improve Our Healthcare System

Thanks for listening to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Text your questions or comments here! We sit down with Dr. Richard Harris to talk about what patient-first medicine looks like when you blend traditional care with lifestyle strategy and still respect real life. We dig into how to personalize plans beyond population averages, improve follow-through, and help people build habits that match who they want to become.  • Dr Harris’s path from pharmacy to internal medicine and why prevention matters  • Evidence-informed medicine and why averages do not equal answers  • A real-world intolerance case and what it teaches about personalization  • Medication versus lifestyle and how we decide based on readiness and risk  • Using meds as a bridge and aiming for the minimum effective dose  • Panic attacks boundaries and the habit audit that changed everything  • Adherence data and why people stick with pills more than practices  • Linking behavior to long-term goals to make change stickier  • Identity-based habits and a diabetes mindset shift that drives action  • A team-based model with pharmacists coaches trainers and dietitians  • What medical school needs most: continuous learning and self-improvement  Feel free to leave your comments in the show notes. Your Brain Builds Eating Habits Without Asking Permission

Thanks for listening to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Text your questions or comments here! If you’ve ever eaten something you promised yourself you wouldn’t, you’ve probably made the same brutal conclusion: “I’m weak.” We’re calling that out for what it is, a story that keeps you stuck. Cravings don’t automatically mean you’re hungry, and they don’t automatically mean you lack discipline. A lot of the time they’re your brain predicting a reward it has learned to expect, the same way it can “feel” your phone vibrate when it didn’t.  We break down the neuroscience of cravings and the habit loop behind them: cue, behavior, reward, repeat. Friday night movie equals ice cream. Stressful commute equals a drive-through stop. Once the loop is repeated enough times, the brain stops asking permission and starts running the script. That doesn’t remove responsibility, it puts it where it belongs: you can’t stop your brain from forming habits, but you can stop reinforcing the ones that sabotage your goals.  From there, we get practical. We talk about building a new, repeatable path that still satisfies, like swapping a 1200-calorie pint for a lower-calorie, higher-protein “Creami” style option so you keep the ritual while changing the result. We also explain why our nutrition coaching starts with lifestyle discovery instead of only calories, macros, and workouts, and why long-term weight maintenance depends on understanding your patterns. We even touch on GLP-1 medications and the hard question: what happens when you stop if the habits never change?  Subscribe, share this with someone battling cravings, and leave a review if it helps. Why Potato Chips Can Beat Apples And Peanut Butter

Thanks for listening to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Text your questions or comments here! If you are “doing everything right” and still not losing weight, the real issue might be that you are solving the wrong problem. We are Brian and Vincent, and we break down a confusion we see all the time: people mix up eating for health, eating for fat loss, and eating for body recomposition as if they are the same goal. They are related, but they are not identical, and that mismatch can make progress feel impossible. We walk through a simple framework for weight loss and body fat: energy balance. Calories are like deposits and withdrawals in a bank account, and fat loss comes from a consistent calorie deficit. That is why “healthy foods” do not automatically create weight loss, and why the scale can stall even when your meals look clean. Then we add the missing layer: nutrient density. Food quality matters because it influences hunger, satiety, recovery, performance, health markers, and how long you can stick to a plan without burning out. We also connect nutrition to training with a clear comparison of walking vs resistance training. Steps can raise daily calorie burn with low recovery cost, while lifting helps preserve and build muscle for better body composition. If your real goal is to “tone up,” we explain why that usually means body recomposition and why starting at maintenance calories, building, then moving into a moderate deficit can work better than instantly cutting hard. You will never look at apples and peanut butter the same way again. If this helped you get clear on your goal, subscribe, share the episode with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more people can find Tut Radio. Thanks for listening to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Text your questions or comments here! We break down what creatine actually is, how it supports the ATP energy system, and why it helps performance without acting like a steroid or a shortcut. We also lay out simple dosing guidance, clear up common myths, and bring the focus back to training, protein, sleep, and long-term consistency. • creatine basics, including what it is and what it isn’t  • the ATP to ADP cycle and why phosphocreatine matters for hard efforts  • muscle saturation explained with simple analogies  • who benefits most, including resistance training, sprinting, and repeated high-intensity work  • creatine loading, why it’s optional, and what it actually changes  • best form to buy, why creatine monohydrate is the default choice  • daily dosing range, timing flexibility, and why consistency wins  • cycling myths and what happens when you stop taking creatine  • women and creatine, including the “bulky” fear  • over-50 considerations, sarcopenia, and preserving strength and independence  • myth busting on kidneys, steroids, dehydration, cramping, and expensive forms  Feel free to leave your comments in the show notes. If You Want To Improve Your Golf Game, Here's How The Pro's Train

Thanks for listening to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Text your questions or comments here! You can spot it a mile away: someone decides they “need to get in shape,” grabs a random workout off the internet, goes way too hard, and then disappears for three months. We wanted to cut through that cycle with someone who’s lived the athlete side of it, so we brought on our friend and former PGA professional Eric Levine to talk about what training actually looks like when performance matters and what changes when real life takes over. Eric shares how he got into golf, what it was like chasing tournaments, and the lesson he learned the hard way: lifting heavy to look strong can be the fastest path to feeling broken if it doesn’t match your sport. We get into golf fitness fundamentals like functional strength, mobility, and the stabilizer muscles that help you control your swing. If you’re a weekend golfer searching for strength training for golfers, golf workout routines, or how to protect your lower back, the big takeaway is clear: distance and consistency come from timing and control, not just “more weight.” We also zoom out to fitness and nutrition for normal schedules. Eric talks about travel, late-night workouts, and why sleep often becomes the most realistic recovery tool. On food, we dig into sustainable habits instead of perfectionism, including his approach to intermittent fasting, breaking a fast with more nutritious choices, cutting sodas and juices, and staying hydrated with water, green tea, and black coffee. We wrap with the most overlooked beginner wins: listen to your body, find an accountability partner, and make a plan you’ll actually enjoy enough to repeat. If you want a smarter way to train for your goals and your lifestyle, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a golf buddy, and leave us a review with your biggest fitness sticking point. How Many Sandwiches Until Mayo Wins

Thanks for listening to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Text your questions or comments here! One comment about weight loss medication turns into a much bigger problem: strangers throwing out quick fixes while skipping the one concept that actually decides whether weight changes energy balance. We walk through a real-world scenario with “Sally,” who’s already lost weight, trains hard five days a week, and swaps mayonnaise for avocado because it feels healthier. Then we zoom out and ask the uncomfortable question: is that swap helping, or is it just another form of restriction that makes the plan harder to stick to? We break down maintenance, surplus, and deficit in plain English, then use the mayo vs avocado debate to show how “healthy” foods can still sabotage fat loss if you don’t track the big picture. The deeper point is sustainability: removing foods you love often creates cravings and rebound eating, while learning to budget those foods into your calories keeps you consistent. We also share a practical approach to recreating comfort meals, cutting a few hundred calories without stripping the meal of what makes it satisfying. Finally, we separate three goals people constantly mash together: weight loss, healthy eating, and body composition. If you want to look lean and athletic, you’ll need a different strategy than just “do more cardio,” including resistance training, enough protein, and realistic expectations about how many calories the gym actually burns. If this hits home, subscribe, share with a friend who’s stuck in the restrict-and-rebound loop, and leave a review telling us what food you refuse to give up. The Truth Nutrition Experts Fail to Apply

Thanks for listening to the show! We’d love to hear from you. Text your questions or comments here! If your “successful” diet ends with you wondering when you can eat cheesecake again, you’re not solving the real problem. We’re digging into why most weight loss plans collapse at the exact moment they’re supposed to become maintenance and how the classic restriction model turns food into a battle you eventually lose. Sustainable weight loss isn’t just about willpower or white-knuckling grilled chicken and broccoli for 12 weeks; it’s about building a lifestyle you can actually live. We talk about the emotional attraction to food and why cravings are often about memories, comfort, and identity, not just calories. Birthday dinners, holidays, Friday nights, and family recipes are part of real life, and pretending they don’t matter is a recipe for rebound weight gain. When a plan forces you to “break up” with the foods tied to togetherness, it can feel like giving up parts of yourself, which is exactly why so many people end up losing the same 30 pounds over and over again. Our solution is simple but powerful: keep the experience and change the recipe. We walk through the mindset of flexible dieting, energy balance, and practical recipe modification so your favorite meals can fit a calorie deficit without feeling like punishment. The goal is a “forever menu” you’d be happy eating from for years, with foods that still taste amazing but are altered to be less calorie-dense and more supportive of your health. If you want weight loss that lasts, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a friend who’s stuck in the diet cycle, and leave a review.
