When Life Goes Sideways: What Nervous System Regulation Actually Looks Like in Real Life | Episode 24

This is not the clean version. This is not the Instagram version where someone has a hard week and comes out the other side with a beautiful lesson and a five-step framework wrapped up in a bow. This is Sandy recording in the middle of it. Still tired. Still not fully back. Still going. On Monday night, Sandy and her husband spent the night at the doggy emergency room with their dog Rudy. They didn't get home until five in the morning. Sleep since then has been interrupted. And she still had a full week to show up for. This episode is for anyone who needs to hear what it actually looks like when someone who teaches nervous system regulation gets her nervous system tested by real life. What This Episode Holds Why Sandy's first response to the emergency was numbness — not panic — and why that was exactly the right nervous system response for the situationThe specific decisions she made on Tuesday morning with no sleep, and why the version of her who used to see 30 clients a week would have handled it completely differentlyThe difference between asking yourself what you're supposed to be able to do versus what you can actually do — and why that distinction changes everythingWhy eating well and hydrating under stress is not wellness culture, it is basic biology — and why your brain and nervous system burn through both faster when you are under pressureA five-step framework Sandy actually used this week, distilled into something you can reach for the next time life goes sidewaysWhy showing up at 60% and calling it a day is not failure — it is protecting your 60% so it can be 80% tomorrowExplicit permission to cancel things, skip non-essential meetings, go numb when the situation calls for it, eat dinner, and go to bedWho This Episode Is For Anyone in the middle of a hard week who needed to hear what this actually looks like from someone who teaches itThe therapist or healer who still pushes through everything on adrenaline and pays for it later in ways that aren't visible in the momentAnyone who has interpreted their own numbing response as evidence that something is wrong with themThe person who has been trained — professionally and personally — to believe pushing through is character and resting is weaknessAnyone who needs explicit permission to not be fully okay and still keep goingThe Five-Step Framework Sandy Actually Used Assess what is actually happening in your body right now. Not what you think you should be feeling. Are you numb, activated, flooded, flat? The answer tells you what you need next. You cannot skip this step.Triage ruthlessly. What actually has to happen today — not what is on the calendar, but what if left undone will cause actual harm? Everything else is negotiable.Meet your basic needs first, not last. Eat something real. Drink water. Sleep if you can. A dysregulated body on no food and no water cannot regulate itself out of stress. It is a resource problem, not a mindset problem.Do what is necessary and call it a day. Not what is impressive or what proves you are okay. What is absolutely necessary — and then stop.Reassess tomorrow. Not at two in the morning. Tomorrow, when you have had some sleep and some food and can see more clearly what the next day needs. "Nervous system regulation is not something you do when things are calm. It is something you practice so that when things go sideways, you have a reservoir to draw from. You have responses available that aren't just push through or collapse." Rudy is still not a hundred percent. Neither is Sandy this week. And she recorded this anyway — because there is more value in hearing what an off-kilter week actually looks like for someone who teaches this than in hearing another polished episode from a place of having it all figured out. What she has is not perfection. It is a set of skills built over a long time that help her navigate the weeks when she doesn't have it together. And that is what she wants for you too. Not immunity from hard weeks. A nervous system with enough resources and enough trust in itself to get you through them without destroying everything you have built in the process. Always have extra bleach. Always have a vet you trust. And always, always be willing to call it a day. What to Actually Do When Your Nervous System Is Dysregulated — A Practical Guide from a Licensed Therapist | Episode 23

Get your HTMA testing done with Sandy: https://sandyboone.thrivecart.com/htma-testing/ Sandy has spent a lot of episodes telling you why. Why you're burned out. Why insight isn't enough. Why you can't think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system. This episode is the how. No theory for the sake of theory. No 14-step protocol you'll abandon by Thursday. Just the tools Sandy actually uses, the ones she actually hands her clients, and the honest truth about how to use them so they actually work. Save this one. Come back to it. This is the episode to have open on your phone the next time your system is running hot. What This Episode Holds The single most important question to ask before you reach for any tool — and why grabbing the wrong one for the state you're in can make things worseThe two directions dysregulation actually moves in — too activated and too shut down — and why they require completely opposite responsesThe physiological sigh: what it is, why it works, and why your body already knows how to do itThe dive reflex and how cold water on your face can interrupt escalation when breathing alone isn't cutting itOrienting to the room — a somatic experiencing tool that sends your brain the quiet signal that you are not currently in dangerHow to discharge stuck survival energy the way every other mammal on earth does instinctivelyWhat a shut-down nervous system actually needs — and why telling it to go for a run is one more impossible demandSensory input, small movement, and the power of reaching for a person — tools for collapse that most people never talk aboutCo-regulation: why borrowing a calmer nervous system is not weakness, it is the original designThe tools that work in both directions — humming, pressure, temperature, feet on the floor, naming what you feelWhy you have to practice these tools when you're calm — and why reaching for them at a nine out of ten is asking your brain to learn to swim in a stormSandy's honest account of finding herself wired and fried at nine at night, jaw clenched, reading the same paragraph four times — and what she actually didThe Core Framework Before any tool, ask one question: Am I revved up — or am I shut down? Gas or brake. Name that first. Then pick accordingly. If you're revved up: Lengthen your exhale — breathe in for four, out for six or eightThe physiological sigh — two inhales through the nose, one long exhale outCold water on the face — triggers the dive reflex to slow heart rateOrient to the room — slowly look around, name what you seeDischarge the energy — push against a wall, shake out your hands, do ten fast squatsIf you're shut down: Move, but small — stand up, roll your shoulders, walk to the end of the hallIf standing feels like too much, start smaller: wiggle your toes, squeeze your hands, press your tongue to the roof of your mouthTurn sensory input up gently — cool water on your hands, a strong scent, something crunchy or sourReach for a person — not to process, just contactTools that work either way: Humming, singing, gargling — stimulates the vagus nerveFeet flat on the floor, press down, feel the ground hold your weightName what you're feeling out loud or on paperWarmth — wrap both hands around a warm mugPressure — weighted blanket, firm self-hug, back flat against a wallWho This Episode Is For The high-capacity person who knows all the theory and still finds herself at nine at night, jaw clenched, unable to landThe therapist or healer who teaches nervous system regulation to everyone else and forgets to use it herselfAnyone who has tried breathing exercises in a moment of crisis and decided they don't work — without realizing the tool wasn't wrong, the timing wasThe person who is reaching for regulation tools all day every day just to stay functional — and is starting to wonder if that means something bigger needs to shiftAnyone who wants something practical, honest, and immediately usable "The goal was never to become a person who never gets dysregulated. That person does not exist. The goal is to become someone who knows the way back." One tool you actually practice is worth more than fifty you read about and never once touched. Pick one. Practice it this week when nothing is even wrong. Make it so small it's almost embarrassing. Messy counts. Ten seconds counts. You are not broken. You have a nervous system doing exactly what it was built to do. And now you have a few ways to speak its language. The Grift vs. The Science: A Trained Clinician's Response to the Wellness Industry Critique | Episode 22

Sandy has been reading. Specifically, she has been reading Matt Hussey at The Brink — two pieces called Sick for Profit: How Wellness Podcasting Sells the Cure It Can't Afford to Give You and Griftonomics: How Wellness Became the Perfect Con and Then Got Elected. Her honest reaction after reading both? He's not wrong. And he's painting with too broad a brush. And when that brush sweeps across functional medicine and everyone practicing it, we have a problem. This episode is Sandy's response — credentialed, transparent, and willing to follow her own money. What This Episode Holds What the wellness grift actually is, why it's real, and why Sandy is not here to defend itThe specific harm of the diagnose-and-sell loop — and what it looks like when clients arrive in her office having spent months and significant money getting steadily more frightened of their own foodWhy Sandy struggles in the coaching space and the business model she is deliberately not building — one that requires clients to stay broken to stay profitableThe critical distinction between the wellness grift and functional medicine practiced by trained, credentialed, ethically transparent clinicians — and why collapsing those two categories is its own kind of intellectual lazinessWhy the gut-brain connection, mineral status, and root-cause medicine are not podcast talking points — they are documented, peer-reviewed scienceWhy conventional medicine is not a neutral alternative, and what symptom management layered on top of symptom management actually costs patients over decadesSandy's honest position on the federal conversation happening right now about food, medication, and health — including what she agrees with and where the logic breaks downGreen labeling, GMOs in organic cereals, and what it means that Sandy — with all of her training and intentionality — still gets fooledWhy "just eat better" runs directly into a wall of access, cost, time, and a food industry that spent decades making the unhealthy option the convenient onePractical, real-world suggestions for eating better in an environment not designed to help you do itWho This Episode Is For The therapist or healer who practices or is curious about functional medicine and has felt the sting of being lumped in with the wellness griftAnyone who has spent money in the wellness space and come away more frightened and more depleted than when they startedThe clinician who believes in root-cause medicine and wants language to defend that position clearly and confidentlyAnyone trying to navigate cleaner eating on a real budget without a farm delivery service or two hours to read ingredient listsThe person who is skeptical of wellness culture and wants a nuanced, honest take from someone willing to follow her own money "There is a difference between being compensated well for genuine expertise and building a business model that requires your clients to stay broken to stay profitable. One of those is a business. The other one is the grift. I am not the grift." Follow the money. Check the credentials. Ask whether the person selling you the protocol has a financial interest in your continued need for it. Sandy is asking you to ask those questions of her too. And she is telling you exactly where she stands. Root cause medicine is real. It is science. It is not perfect and neither are the people practicing it. But it is worth defending from a brush that is painting everything the same color. I Left Corporate America and Rebuilt It With My Own Hands: What I Wish I'd Known Before Building My Practice | Ep. 21

Sandy left corporate America to build something different. Something meaningful. Something that reflected who she actually was. Something that felt like freedom after years of bureaucracy and grind. And then, without ever deciding to, she rebuilt corporate America inside her own practice — with her own hands. This episode is the honest retrospective she wishes someone had given her before she started. The decisions that cost her years she didn't need to lose. The ones she got right. And the moment she finally saw clearly what she had actually built. What This Episode Holds Why the logistics of building a practice are rarely what breaks you — and what actually doesThe hedgehog experiment: what animal-assisted therapy taught Sandy about trusting her instincts over novelty, and why she walked away without looking backHow starting on insurance panels from a place of scarcity — not strategy — set the entire trajectory of her early practice, and what that cost herThe internal logic of scarcity thinking: why it doesn't stop once you have clients, it just shifts its targetThe real cost of doing your own taxes, skipping a business coach, and white-knuckling every decision alone — and why none of that was actually freeWhat hiring four virtual assistants before finding the right one taught Sandy about delegation as a skill, not a single decisionThe Facebook group exchange that happened the morning of recording — an anonymous commenter behind a cartoon tiger avatar, Sandy's credentials, and what it looks like to handle that as a regulated, grounded practice ownerWhat COVID's quiet finally made visible that years of noise had kept hiddenWhy the clarity practice owners are searching for rarely comes from another consultation group — and where it actually comes fromWho This Episode Is For The therapist who left a system that wasn't working and is quietly recreating it inside her own practice without realizing itThe practice owner who is seeing too many clients, doing her own taxes, and calling it responsibilityAnyone who has been saying yes to populations or services they don't actually enjoy because they thought a real therapist should be able to work with anyoneThe healer who is absorbing everyone else's opinions about how a practice should run and has lost track of what she actually thinksThe therapist who is ready to stop performing confidence and start building something honest "You did not leave corporate America to rebuild it with your own hands. Stop performing confidence and start practicing honesty. The clarity you're looking for isn't going to come from another consultation group. It's going to come from quiet." What Sandy has now is smaller in some ways. And far more sustainable in every way that actually matters. This episode is an invitation to stop outsourcing your sense of legitimacy to people who were never going to give it to you anyway — and to finally get quiet enough to hear what you actually want to build. Watch Your Character: What Doing the Right Thing Actually Costs | Episode 20

There's a quote hanging in Sandy's therapist's office. Watch your thoughts, they become your words. Watch your words, they become your actions. Watch your actions, they become your habits. Watch your habits, they become your character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny. She has read it a hundred times. Lately, she keeps landing on the same word — not destiny, not habits. Character. The piece we talk about the least and the one that matters most. This episode is about what character actually costs, told through a story Sandy has carried for over twenty years. What This Episode Holds Why character is not a personality trait or something you're born with — it's what you do when it costs you somethingThe critical difference between staying in your lane as wisdom and staying in your lane as avoidanceWhy critical thinking — slow, nuanced, uncomfortable thinking — has become an endangered skill, and why character depends on itSandy's deeply personal story about bowing out of her closest cousin's wedding and writing him a letter that cost her over twenty years of relationship with a family she lovedThe honest, rarely discussed truth that doing the right thing is often not rewarded, not validated, and not freeA direct and practical conversation for therapists and healers about advocacy, mandatory reporting, and the difference between appropriate professional boundaries and using "staying in your lane" as an excuse to look awayWhy character is built in a thousand small, quiet choices rather than one dramatic momentWho This Episode Is For Anyone who has stayed silent about something that felt wrong and is still carrying the weight of that choiceThe therapist or helper who has made a hard call — a mandatory report, a difficult referral, an uncomfortable conversation — and wondered if it matteredAnyone who did the right thing and lost something significant because of it, and has never quite had language for that griefThe woman who has been told to mind her business, stay in her lane, or not get involved, and is starting to question whether that advice always serves her valuesAnyone trying to figure out who they want to be in the small, costly, unwitnessed moments of their life"Character is not a grand gesture. It's not a dramatic moment where you ride in on a white horse and save the day. Character is built in the small moments, the quiet ones, the ones where nobody is watching and you do the right thing anyway." Sandy doesn't regret the letter. Not because she was right — she prayed she was wrong. But because she loved her cousin enough to say the hard thing, and chose her daughter and her integrity over a bridesmaid's dress and family approval. That is the kind of person she wants to be. And the only way to become that person is to keep making that choice, especially in the moments that cost something. Watch your character. It is becoming your destiny. Why Your Nervous System Work Isn't Working: The Mineral Depletion Nobody's Testing For | Episode 19

Have you ever felt exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't fix? You're eating reasonably well. You're resting. You're managing your stress as best you can. And you still wake up tired. Still drag through your days. Still feel like your body is working against you instead of with you. If that's you, Sandy has something to share that changed the way she understands her own health — something years of traditional lab work completely missed. What This Episode Holds What HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis) actually is, and why hair tells a longer biochemical story than blood ever couldWhy Sandy decided to take this test on herself before ever offering it to a client — and what showed up in her own resultsThe concept of a "calcium shell" — what it means when calcium becomes biounavailable, and why it often shows up in people who look composed on the outside while running on empty underneathWhat Sandy's thyroid and adrenal markers revealed about chronic, bone-deep fatigue that doesn't respond to sleepWhy mineral patterns are not just physiological — they are psychological too, and how the calcium shell showed up in Sandy's behavior as well as her bloodworkWhy nervous system regulation work — breathwork, somatic practices, therapy, neurofeedback — can only go so far if your minerals are depletedWhat it actually looks like to order an HTMA, what the process involves, and how Sandy walks clients through their resultsWho This Episode Is For The healer or helping professional who has been running on reserves for years and has the labs to "prove" everything is fine, but doesn't feel fineAnyone whose exhaustion doesn't respond to rest, no matter how much they prioritize sleepThe person who has done all the nervous system work — therapy, breathwork, somatic practices — and still feels like something underneath isn't shiftingAnyone curious about functional or root-cause approaches to fatigue, thyroid sluggishness, or adrenal depletionThe therapist or coach who wants to understand their own biochemistry before they ever consider offering tools like this to clients"Minerals are the spark plugs of life. You can have a great engine — capable, intelligent, well-intentioned — and if the spark plugs aren't firing, nothing works the way it's supposed to. You don't need more discipline. You don't need more willpower. Sometimes you need to know what's actually happening in your body so you can give it what it actually needs." Somatic Experiencing & Chronic Pain: Trauma and the Body | Episode 18

Sandy was recently asked to speak on a workman's compensation panel about somatic experiencing — and she is bringing that same depth of expertise directly to this episode. If you have ever wondered what somatic experiencing actually is, how it differs from talk therapy, or why chronic pain so often has a nervous system story underneath it, this is the most comprehensive answer Sandy has given on the podcast. What This Episode Holds What somatic experiencing actually is, how Peter Levine developed it, and why it works at the physiological level rather than the cognitive oneThe concept of pendulation — and Sandy's simple, memorable way of explaining it to clientsWhy trauma is stored as unresolved survival energy, not as a memory — and what that means for healingThe animal world's natural discharge response (and why humans rarely get the chance to do what every other mammal does instinctively)How acute pain transitions into chronic pain, and why that shift is often about protection rather than ongoing tissue damageWhat healers and clinicians should actually be watching for when recognizing nervous system dysregulation in themselves or their clientsWhy chronic pain is reversible when the nervous system is addressed — and what that process actually looks likeA powerful personal story from Sandy's clinical research days about connection, placebo effect, and what genuinely helped patients' pain scores improveAn illuminating conversation with rheumatologist Dr. James Fant about fibromyalgia, trauma correlation, and why so many physicians who pursue this connection face professional pushbackWhy shifting from suspicion to safety may be the single most important change in how we approach chronic pain treatmentWho This Episode Is For The therapist or healer curious about body-based modalities and how they differ from traditional talk therapyAnyone living with chronic pain who has felt dismissed, doubted, or told it's "all in their head"The clinician working with workman's compensation, chronic pain, or fibromyalgia populationsHealthcare providers wanting to understand the nervous system science behind why connection and validation measurably improve patient outcomesAnyone curious about the deep, often under-discussed relationship between unresolved trauma and physical pain "Chronic pain often reflects a nervous system that's never received the signal that it's safe again. And that experience has to be felt. It cannot be told." The nervous system is plastic. The brain can relearn safety. And when threat perception decreases and regulation improves, people experience real, measurable reductions in pain — not because the pain was ever imaginary, but because the body has finally been given what it needed to complete the process it was always designed to complete. We were never built for the breakneck pace of the world we live in now. But we are built to heal. Sometimes all it takes is curiosity, safety, and someone willing to notice. Leaving Insurance Panels as a Therapist | Episode 17

Do you know how much control your insurance panels actually have over your practice? Not your clinical decisions. Not your treatment approach. Your business — your rates, your caseload, your credentialing data, your evenings lost to prior authorizations and claim denials. The reimbursements that haven't kept up with inflation in years. Most therapists don't know the full picture until they are already in the middle of trying to leave it. This episode is the conversation nobody had with you when you got licensed — and the one Sandy wishes someone had with her. What This Episode Holds The CAQH revelation that stopped Sandy in her tracks — what it means that the credentialing system holding your professional and banking data is now owned by 12 insurance company shareholders, and why every therapist needs to understand this before deciding whether to stay or goWhy the fear of leaving insurance panels is real, valid, and worth naming — especially in an uncertain economy where caseloads are already shiftingThe critical reframe on a decreasing insurance caseload versus a decreasing private pay caseload — and why the math looks very different depending on which side of that line you are onThe five logistics that blindside therapists most often when they try to exit panels — including the one contractual mistake that could put you in ethical violation before you even realize itWhy termination timelines vary wildly across panels — and why assuming they are all the same could cost you monthsWhat an ethical exit actually looks like, step by step — and why integrity in how you leave matters as much as the decision to leaveWhy there is no perfect time — and what the therapists who are thriving in private pay did differently than the ones still waiting for certaintyThe 5 Logistics Nobody Warns You About You cannot simply stop taking new insurance clients — depending on your contracts, this may be an ethical and contractual violationTermination timelines vary wildly — some panels require 60 days, some require six months. Read every contract individuallySend every termination letter certified mail with return receipt requested — and keep every document. No exceptionsBuilding a referral list for transitioning clients is ethically complicated and harder than it sounds — Sandy walks through exactly what your obligation is and what it isn'tInsurance is paying you roughly 40 to 60% of what your service is actually worth — and that number gets lower when you factor in your administrative hoursWho This Episode Is For The therapist who has been thinking about leaving insurance panels but doesn't know where to startThe clinician who is burned out on prior authorizations, claim denials, and reimbursement rates that haven't moved in yearsAnyone who has been quietly phasing out insurance clients without realizing that may not be the legally or ethically sound approachThe therapist who is scared — and wants honest information about what the transition actually involves before she decidesAny healer who is ready to understand who is really running her practice and what it would take to change thatKey Quote "You are not an independent contractor who happens to work with insurance companies. In many ways, you are operating inside a system that was designed by and for them. The question is not whether the conditions are perfect for leaving. The question is whether you have the information, the plan, and the support to make a thoughtful transition." Leaving insurance panels is not simple. It is not fast. It is not without complexity or logistical headaches. And it is absolutely possible. The fear that keeps most therapists stuck is not fear of the process. It is fear of the unknown. And the antidote to that is not certainty — it is information. You now have more of it than you did before you listened to this episode. About

Welcome to The Brain Dump with Sandy Boone. This is THE podcast for healers who need a space to take care of themselves.
