Things That Scare Us: Fear of Vulnerability

🎃 THINGS THAT SCARE US: THE FEAR OF VULNERABILITY Why Being Seen, Heard, and Truly Known Can Feel So Scary What if one of the most frightening things we experience isn’t something lurking in the dark, but the possibility of allowing someone to see who we really are? We all desire love, acceptance, belonging, and meaningful connections. Yet for many of us, being emotionally vulnerable can feel terrifying. Why do we say, “I’m fine,” when we’re struggling? Why do we build emotional walls, hide our feelings, or convince ourselves that needing someone is a sign of weakness? And perhaps most importantly, where did we learn that being vulnerable wasn’t safe? 💜 In this episode of Our Wellness Room, Christa and Andrew continue their October series, Things That Scare Us, with a listener-selected topic: The Fear of Vulnerability. Drawing from their backgrounds in counseling, mental health, and wellness, they explore the psychological and emotional factors that influence our ability to trust, connect, and allow ourselves to be truly known. 🧠 In this episode, we’re exploring: 💜 The Psychology of Vulnerability: Why emotional openness can sometimes activate fear, anxiety, and protective responses. 🧡 Attachment Theory: How our earliest relationships influence our expectations of trust, emotional safety, and intimacy. 💜 Trauma and Protective Patterns: How painful experiences, rejection, and betrayal can shape the ways we protect ourselves from emotional harm. 🧡 Shame and the Fear of Judgment: Why we sometimes believe that revealing our struggles or imperfections makes us less worthy of love and acceptance. 💜 The Pressure to Be Strong: Why the people who spend their lives caring for others may struggle the most with asking for help or receiving support. 🧡 Healthy Vulnerability and Boundaries: Understanding that emotional openness doesn’t mean sharing everything with everyone. 💜 Finding the Courage to Connect: How self-awareness, self-compassion, and emotionally safe relationships can help us develop healthier patterns of connection. Throughout this conversation, Christa and Andrew invite listeners to consider how their past experiences may influence their present relationships—and how understanding those patterns can create opportunities for growth and healing. ✨ Something to think about: Sometimes the walls we build to protect ourselves from being hurt are the very walls preventing us from experiencing the connection we desperately desire. But vulnerability isn’t about tearing down every wall. It’s about learning when, where, and with whom we can safely allow ourselves to be seen. You can be imperfect and still be worthy. You can need support and still be strong. You can have boundaries and still experience meaningful connection. 🎙️ Join Christa and Andrew for an honest, compassionate, and thought-provoking conversation about one of the most universal—and often misunderstood—human fears. Because sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is allow ourselves to be human. 💜 Our Wellness Room Real Conversations. Real Connections. Real Wellness.

Things That Scare Us: Fear of Change

What if we’re not actually afraid of change, but afraid of what might happen afterward? Change is an inevitable part of life, yet even the possibility of something different can leave us feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or completely stuck. Why do we sometimes cling to what’s familiar, even when it no longer serves us? And why can the uncertainty of a new beginning feel more frightening than the discomfort of staying exactly where we are? This week on Our Wellness Room Podcast, Christa and Andrew continue their October series, Things That Scare Us, by exploring the psychology behind our fear of change. Together, we’re unpacking: Why our brains seek familiarity, patterns, and predictability. How past experiences, conditioning, and trauma can influence our responses to change. The difference between fearing change itself and fearing the uncertainty that follows. Why we sometimes remain in uncomfortable situations simply because they’re familiar. How fear can keep us stuck—and how we can begin moving forward with greater awareness, compassion, and courage. Whether you’re navigating a major life transition, considering a difficult decision, or simply struggling to let go of what you’ve always known, this conversation is for you. Maybe the goal isn’t to stop being afraid of change. Maybe it’s learning that we can experience fear and still move forward. So pull up a chair, get comfortable, and join us for another real conversation about the things that scare us. 💜 Our Wellness Room Podcast Real People. Real Conversations. Things That Scare Us: What Will They Remember About Me?

October is here, and Our Wellness Room is getting a little spooky! 👻 But this week, we discovered that some of the things that scare us most have nothing to do with ghosts, haunted houses, or creepy dolls. Why do some people love being scared while others avoid scary things altogether? Why do painful experiences sometimes stick with us longer than positive ones? And why can it be so difficult to see beyond someone’s mistakes—even when they’ve grown and changed? In this episode, Christa and Andrew explore the psychology behind fear and recreational fear, negativity bias, rejection and abandonment, shame, mistakes, reputation, forgiveness, accountability, and our very human desire to be remembered for the good we’ve brought into the world. We also wrestle with some bigger questions: Can someone take responsibility for something they’ve done without allowing it to define who they are forever? Can we acknowledge the ways someone has hurt us while still recognizing the entirety of who they are? And what happens when we’ve grown—but someone else is still holding onto an older version of us? Perhaps one of the scariest things isn’t being forgotten at all. Maybe it’s being remembered for the wrong things. 🎙️ Pull up a chair and join us for the first episode in our October series, Things That Scare Us. And after you listen, we want to know: 👻 What scares you more—being forgotten, or being remembered for something you wish people could forget? Our Wellness Room Podcast Real People. Recovery Is Possible: Understanding Substance Use, Addiction & Hope

🎙️ Recovery Is Possible: Understanding Substance Use, Addiction & Hope September is National Recovery Month, and this week Our Wellness Room is opening the door to an honest, compassionate conversation about substance use disorder, addiction, and recovery. What’s the difference between substance use, misuse, dependence, and substance use disorder? When does substance use become a clinical concern? And why is addiction so much more complicated than simply telling someone to “just stop”? Christa and Andrew explore what substance use disorder can really look like—beyond the stereotypes. We talk about the role of stigma and shame, the impact addiction can have on individuals and the people who love them, and the difficult balance between offering compassion and maintaining healthy boundaries. We also talk about something that can sometimes get lost in conversations about addiction: hope. Recovery doesn’t look the same for everyone. It may involve treatment, therapy, peer support, medication, community, rebuilding relationships, learning new ways to cope, and sometimes beginning again after setbacks. Recovery is not simply about stopping the use of a substance—it can be about rebuilding a life. Whether you are in recovery, considering making a change, supporting someone you love, working in the helping professions, or simply wanting to better understand substance use disorder, there is room for you in this conversation. 💚 Different stories. Same hope. People can and do recover. Pull up a chair. Our Wellness Room is open. Our Wellness Room with Christa & Andrew Real people. Real conversations. Real hope.

    Suicide Prevention & Awareness:

Suicide Prevention & Awareness: Real People. Real Struggles. Real Hope. Suicide is one of the hardest conversations we can have—and perhaps one of the most important. In this episode of Our Wellness Room, Christa and Andrew open the door to an honest, compassionate conversation about suicide prevention and awareness. We talk about what suicidal thoughts can look like, why someone may appear “fine” while quietly struggling, warning signs we shouldn’t ignore, and how to approach someone when we’re concerned. We also explore a question many people are afraid to ask: “Are you thinking about suicide?” What happens if the answer is yes? What should we say? What should we avoid? And how can we support someone not only during a crisis, but in the days and weeks that follow? Most importantly, this episode is about replacing shame with compassion and reminding one another that struggling does not make someone weak, broken, or beyond hope. Mental health struggles can touch anyone—including the people who spend their lives helping others. You don’t need perfect words to help someone. Sometimes you simply need the courage to ask, the willingness to listen, and the compassion to stay. Real People. Real Struggles. Real Hope. Content note: This episode contains discussion of suicide, suicidal thoughts, and mental health crisis. Please listen with care. If you or someone you know is struggling or experiencing a mental health crisis in the United States, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If there is immediate danger, call 911 (tel:911) or go to the nearest emergency department. ❤️ You matter. Your story matters. And asking for help is always allowed.

Teen Relationships, Sex, Peer Pressure, and Substances

🎙️ Back-to-School Series, Part 2: Helping Teens Navigate the Real World Being a teenager has never been simple—but today’s teens are navigating relationships, peer pressure, mental health challenges, substances and vaping, technology, and expectations that can sometimes feel overwhelming. In Part 2 of Our Wellness Room’s Back-to-School Series, Christa and Andrew continue the conversation about what teens are facing and, more importantly, how the adults in their lives can support them. We explore peer influence and identity, teen dating and healthy relationships, red flags and love bombing, boundaries and consent, substance use and vaping, stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being. We also talk about those moments when a teenager says “I’m fine”—when their behavior may be telling us something very different. Throughout the episode, we focus on one recurring message: connection before correction. Supporting teens doesn’t mean having all the answers or eliminating every struggle. It means creating relationships where young people feel safe enough to talk, ask for help, make mistakes, set boundaries, and know that the adults who care about them will continue showing up. Whether you’re a parent, educator, mental health professional, caregiver—or simply someone who cares about the next generation—we hope this conversation gives you practical tools, a different perspective, and a reminder that sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer a teenager is a safe place to land. 💙 Different perspectives. Stronger conversations. Healthier teens. Brighter tomorrows. 🎙️ Our Wellness Room — Real talk. Real tools. Real support.
