Latino Voter Turnout Rises; CHASS CEO Takes National Role; DPSCD Leader Earns Visionary Award

In this week’s edition of EL PULSO, Latino voter turnout rises in Michigan as organizers prepare for the November election. New post-primary research shows growing participation among Latino voters, while campaigns face questions about the cost of living, immigration enforcement, and how early they engage the community. We also look at President Donald Trump’s recent comments about Mexico alongside trade data showing that Mexican exports to the United States reached nearly $359 billion during the first seven months of 2026. Plus, Detroit NAACP President Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony criticizes a Department of Homeland Security plan to spend $20 million on electric shock gloves for ICE agents, calling instead for greater accountability and oversight. Two Detroit leaders are also being recognized for their work in the community. CHASS Center CEO Dr. Felix Valbuena takes on a national leadership role in community health, while DPSCD Deputy Superintendent Alycia Meriweather receives a 2026 Skillman Visionary Award for her work supporting Detroit students and families. We also visit Corktown, where Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger joins workers for Detroit’s Labor Day traditions, and close with Detroit City FC’s dramatic 1-1 draw against Hartford Athletic after Le Rouge gives up a penalty on the final kick. This episode of EL PULSO is sponsored by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. See Grammy Award winner Aida Cuevas, the Queen of Mariachi Music, perform with the DSO on Friday, September 18 at Orchestra Hall. Tickets start at $29 at DSO.org.
