Mark 11:1–26 - The Fruitless Fig Tree

In Mark 11:1–26, Jesus curses a leafy but fruitless fig tree in an enacted parable. The fig tree stands for the Temple and its authorities. He arrives in Jerusalem as the promised King and Son of David—approaching from the Mount of Olives, riding a donkey’s colt, and welcomed by the shouting multitude (Zechariah 9 and 14). The outward signs of messianic hope are present, yet He finds only a show of religion rather than the fruit of genuine righteousness and worship. When He enters the Temple a second time, He discovers not merely emptiness but active wickedness: the house of prayer for all nations has become a place of exploitation. Overturning the tables, Jesus confronts the unholy commerce and declares that the Temple belongs to the Lord, who desires fruit from both Jews and God-fearing Gentiles. The withered fig tree becomes the occasion for teaching on prayer and forgiveness. Mountains symbolize powers and kingdoms; faithful prayer, rooted in trust that God sits on His throne and will subdue all things to Christ, can level what stands against His reign. Yet such prayer is powerless if it rises from an unforgiving heart. Jesus denounces the Temple’s corruption while still weeping over its people and ultimately shedding His blood to rescue them. As the true Temple, God’s people are warned not to repeat the same barren show of religion. We are called to bear the fruit of Christ by the Spirit, to pray against the enemies of His kingdom, and to forgive our own enemies.

    Genesis 22: 1-14 - Mt. Moriah & Forgiveness

God tests Abraham on Mount Moriah: take your only son Isaac, whom you love, and offer him. Abraham goes, Isaac carries the wood, a ram is provided in his place, and the place is named “the Lord will provide.” That mountain runs through the rest of Scripture and history—David’s threshing floor, Solomon’s temple, exile, the second temple, Herod, the destruction in 70 AD, and the Dome of the Rock that still stands there. Yet Jesus was not crucified on Moriah. Golgotha, the place of the skull, is not the temple mount. It lies to the east, on the Mount of Olives: the direction of exile and curse, the place associated with Goliath’s head, where the centurion could see the temple veil torn in two. Isaac’s story points to Christ—the beloved only Son, three days, the wood on His back, the substitute, the thorns, blessing for the nations—but the cross had to be east of Moriah. There Jesus became a curse for us so that worship would no longer be tied to one mountain, but offered in spirit and in truth throughout the world. Forgiveness is not another trip to Moriah with another sacrifice of guilt, pity, or performance. It is union with the one perfect offering of Christ. God does not give us the wrath we deserve; He gives us what His Son deserves. That does not license sin. It calls us to stop trusting repeated self-offerings, to confess that we cannot defeat sin on our own, to seek and extend real forgiveness, and to walk as those already washed clean in Jesus.
