    In this episode of Hidden Guzheng Echoes, I share the fast and returning sections of the guzheng trio Along the River During the Qingming Festival. Here, the music takes on a brighter and more energetic character. The three musical voices continually respond to one another, creating an ever-changing flow of rhythm, texture, and movement. Rather than relying on dramatic contrasts, the music builds its vitality through constant interaction and subtle transformation. As the familiar melody returns, it is never simply repeated. Gentle changes in rhythm, tone color, and texture allow the music to reveal a new sense of depth. Like flowing water, it is sometimes calm, sometimes full of energy, yet it always keeps its own natural sense of breath.     Along the River During the Qingming Festival – Unfolding | Hidden Guzheng Echoes Ep. 13

    In this episode of Hidden Guzheng Echoes, I share the opening and slow section of the guzheng trio Along the River During the Qingming Festival. What fascinates me most is not what the music describes, but the way it gradually unfolds. It begins from a quiet distance, slowly drawing closer through subtle changes in texture, resonance, and musical space. Although the overall mood remains calm and restrained, the three musical voices continually respond to one another, each adding its own color and subtle detail to the unfolding texture. As the music moves toward the middle section, the familiar melody becomes more fluid, bringing a quiet sense of openness while preserving its gentle character.     Nan Du | Hidden Guzheng Echoes Ep. 12

    Nan Du (南渡) is a contemporary guzheng duet composed by Qiu Ji. The piece draws inspiration from earlier works such as Han Du (Cold Crossing) and the guqin tradition, exploring the idea of “crossing” as both a physical journey and a metaphorical passage. Rather than focusing on destination, the music reflects movement itself — drifting, unstable, and constantly shifting between tension and stillness. As a duet, the two guzhengs weave in and out of each other’s space, sometimes in dialogue, sometimes in divergence, like travelers moving along the same river but carried by different currents. In this performance, I collaborated with a longtime friend and fellow musician. Our rehearsal process, as well as the shared listening and exchange during it, became an inseparable part of how the piece came to life. For me, Nan Du is not only about crossing water, but also about crossing between people, perspectives, and moments of understanding that are never fully fixed.     Fen Hong Lian | Hidden Guzheng Echoes Ep. 11

    Fen Hong Lian (粉红莲) is a traditional Chaozhou guzheng piece in the version compiled by Xu Shoucheng. Unlike works that rely on dramatic contrasts or rapid changes of mood, Fen Hong Lian unfolds with elegance, restraint, and quiet emotional depth. The music develops gradually, maintaining a sense of balance while allowing subtle variations in ornamentation and phrasing to shape its character. Although the tempo changes only slightly throughout the piece, the delicate embellishments and small details continually transform the musical imagery. Each phrase returns with a different color, creating a feeling of refinement rather than display. What attracts me most to this work is its beauty of restraint. Rather than expressing emotion directly, it reveals itself gradually through tone, timing, and the space between notes.     Shen Ren Chang｜Hidden Guzheng Echoes Ep. 10

    Shen Ren Chang (神人畅) is an ancient melody originally associated with the guqin tradition and traditionally attributed to Emperor Yao. According to legend, when Yao played the qin, divine beings descended into his chamber, giving rise to this composition. This version was adapted for guzheng by Qiu Ji, preserving the spirit of the original work while allowing the guzheng to echo the essence of traditional Chinese music — a sound world shaped by stillness, resonance, and subtle transformation. The piece begins with overtones and gradually unfolds through shifting textures, rhythmic motion, and contrasting energies. After moments of intensity and expansion, the music slowly returns to quietness, echoing the atmosphere of the opening. The piece carries elements of the Chaozhou guzheng tradition, with a tonal flavor similar to the Qing San Liu mode. It presents a bright and refined musical character, both lively and elegant. The music portrays a spring stream in motion — at times rushing forward with energy, and at other moments flowing gently and winding through the valley. What I find most compelling is the sense of natural breathing within the sound, where movement and stillness coexist, and the listener is drawn into a quiet, unfolding space. An Xiang was originally written for guzheng and cello, and is presented here as a duet for two guzhengs. Inspired by Wang Anshi’s Plum Blossom, the piece centers on the image of “hidden fragrance,” expressed through subtle resonance and delicate timbral changes. The music unfolds in a restrained and lyrical manner, shaped by the dialogue between the two instruments. It moves between stillness and quiet intensity, and concludes with harmonics that fade like a lingering scent, leaving a sense of depth and calm.
