    Andrea del Verrocchio: The Master History Defamed

    Lorenzo Ghiberti: The Hands No One Remembers

    Two men entered a competition that would decide who got to build the most important doors in Florence. One of them won, wrote down exactly how it happened, and stayed graceful about it. History remembers the other one as the genius, thanks largely to a biography written after the winner was dead. Lorenzo Ghiberti beat six rivals at twenty-three with a single bronze panel, then spent the next fifty years proving the judges right: two sets of doors for the Baptistery, statues at Orsanmichele, stained glass inside the Duomo, and a workshop that trained a young Donatello and an even younger Paolo Uccello before either one was famous. He collected ancient gems on the side, wrote treatises on optics, and eventually sat down to record his own life, decades before anyone thought to do that for an artist.     Giorgio Vasari: The Invisible Architect
