Art, Power & Revolution — From Baroque Kings to Napoleon

In this episode of AP European History in 15, Mr. Bruns explores how European art between 1648 and 1815 reflected—and helped shape—the religious, political, and social changes of the era. We’ll step into the spectacular world of the Baroque, where Catholic rulers and absolute monarchs used dramatic art, architecture, and sculpture to inspire religious devotion and make political power impossible to ignore. From the Spanish court of Diego Velázquez and the mysterious Las Meninas to the theatrical sculptures of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, (The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa) we’ll see how artists turned movement, emotion, light, and grandeur into powerful messages. Then we head north to the Dutch Golden Age, where art takes a very different direction. Rembrandt (Christ Crucified between the Two Thieves: The Three Crosses) and Johannes Vermeer (Girl with a Pearl Earring) created works for a prosperous merchant class rather than primarily for kings and churches. Portraits, landscapes, domestic interiors, and scenes of everyday life reveal how the rise of the Dutch Republic and its commercial economy changed who bought art—and what artists painted. Finally, we jump into the Enlightenment and French Revolution, where art becomes increasingly connected to reason, civic virtue, politics, and revolutionary ideals. Jacques-Louis David (Oath of the Horatii) provides the perfect example of how art could move from glorifying monarchs to glorifying the revolution—and eventually Napoleon.
