The DIsappearance of Laurie Depies - An Interview with Bruce Jacobs, Private Investigator

What if Laurie Depies never made it to the parking lot where her car was discovered? On August 19, 1992, 19-year-old Laurie Depies disappeared outside her boyfriend's apartment complex in Menasha, Wisconsin. Her car was found locked, with a mysterious Styrofoam cup on the roof, but Laurie was nowhere to be found. More than 34 years later, her disappearance remains one of Wisconsin's most baffling unsolved missing-person cases. In this exclusive True Crime Unsolved interview, hosts Sean and Myles welcome Bruce Jacobs, a retired police officer with 30 years of law enforcement experience, licensed private investigator, and behavioral analysis specialist who has spent years independently investigating Laurie's disappearance. After conducting interviews with Laurie's family, former boyfriend, and other people connected to the case, Bruce has developed a provocative theory: Laurie may have disappeared somewhere else, and her car may have been deliberately placed outside her boyfriend's apartment to mislead investigators. Bruce discusses his findings, the people he's interviewed, and why he believes someone close to Laurie may know more than they've revealed. IN THIS EPISODE: 🔎 Why Bruce believes Laurie never drove into the apartment parking lot. 🚗 The possibility that Laurie's abandoned car was part of a staged crime scene. 🧬 The mysterious Styrofoam cup and whether modern DNA testing could provide answers. 🕵️ Previously overlooked individuals Bruce believes deserve further investigation. 🗣️ What his interviews with Laurie's family, boyfriend, and acquaintances have revealed. ⚠️ Possible motives, including allegations involving personal relationships and retaliation. 📁 Why Bruce is frustrated by his attempts to share information with Wisconsin's Division of Criminal Investigation. ❓ Could a fresh examination of the evidence finally solve Laurie's disappearance? Bruce's conclusions are his own investigative theories, not established findings of law enforcement. No one has been charged in connection with Laurie's disappearance, and behavioral observations alone cannot establish deception or criminal involvement. But his investigation raises an important question: Have investigators been looking in the wrong place for more than three decades? The Disappearance of Laurie Depies | Case Breakdown

On August 19, 1992, 20-year-old Laurie Jean Depies vanished outside her boyfriend's apartment in Wisconsin. Three people inside heard what they believed was her car arriving, but Laurie never came upstairs. When they went looking, they discovered her locked Volkswagen Rabbit, her purse and overnight bag still inside, and a mysterious Styrofoam cup filled with soda sitting on top of the vehicle. Laurie was nowhere to be found. More than 34 years later, despite an extensive investigation, multiple persons of interest, and even a confession from a convicted kidnapper, the disappearance of Laurie Depies remains unsolved. In this episode of TRUE CRIME UNSOLVED, documentary producers Sean Cahill and Myles Reiff investigate one of Wisconsin's most baffling missing-person cases. WHO WAS LAURIE DEPIES? Laurie was a 20-year-old woman working at Graffiti, a clothing store in the Fox River Mall near Appleton, Wisconsin. She loved punk rock, had a close circle of friends, and was beginning to think about what she wanted from the next chapter of her life. On the evening of August 19, 1992, Laurie finished her shift at the mall and drove toward the apartment of her boyfriend, Marc Truebenbach. She was never seen again. THE MYSTERY OF THE LOCKED CAR When Laurie's boyfriend, his sister, and a friend realized she hadn't come upstairs, they went looking for her. Her Volkswagen Rabbit was parked outside. Its doors were locked, her personal belongings remained inside, and a cup of soda had apparently been placed on top of the vehicle. There were no obvious signs of a struggle. No reported screams. No eyewitnesses to an abduction. What happened in those few minutes between Laurie's apparent arrival and her disappearance? THE SUSPECTS AND INVESTIGATIVE LEADS We examine the major theories and developments in the Laurie Depies investigation, including: • Larry DeWayne Hall, a convicted kidnapper who confessed to involvement in Laurie's disappearance in 2010, but whose claims were never sufficiently corroborated. • David Spanbauer, a convicted murderer whose history of violent crimes against women attracted investigators' attention. • The possibility that Laurie was targeted by an unknown stalker or someone who encountered her at the Fox River Mall. • Questions surrounding the circumstances of her disappearance and whether someone she knew might have been involved. • The mysterious Styrofoam soda cup and the possibility of forensic evidence that could still be relevant today. EXCLUSIVE TRUE CRIME UNSOLVED COVERAGE Our investigation into Laurie Depies doesn't end with this case breakdown. We've spoken with Laurie's longtime friends, including people who participated in the original search and have continued seeking answers for decades. We're also preparing interviews with private investigator Bruce Jacobs, who believes he has uncovered new information, and Marc Truebenbach, Laurie's boyfriend at the time of her disappearance. These firsthand conversations will explore Laurie's life, the original investigation, and unanswered questions that remain more than three decades later. WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED TO LAURIE DEPIES? Was Laurie abducted by a stranger? Did someone follow her from the mall? Could a person from her social circle know more than they've revealed? And what does the unexplained soda cup tell us about her final moments? Share your thoughts, questions, and theories in the comments. The Disappearance of Jodi Huisintruit - Suspects & Theories

Who abducted Jodi Huisentruit? More than 31 years after the Iowa television news anchor vanished outside her Mason City apartment, investigators have examined numerous suspects, pursued new leads, and conducted searches across multiple states. Yet Jodi has never been found, and no one has ever been charged. In this episode of True Crime Unsolved, hosts Sean Cahill and Myles Reiff take a deep dive into the suspects, persons of interest, and theories surrounding the 1995 disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit—including one of the newest developments in this decades-old cold case. On June 27, 1995, 27-year-old KIMT-TV news anchor Jodi Huisentruit disappeared while preparing to leave for work. Her red Mazda Miata remained parked outside her apartment, where investigators discovered scattered personal belongings, a bent car key, signs of a struggle, and a partial palm print. What happened that morning? Was Jodi abducted by someone she knew, a violent predator passing through Mason City, or an unidentified stalker who had been watching her? SUSPECTS & THEORIES EXAMINED   JOHN VANSICE — The Close Friend A significantly older friend who reportedly saw Jodi the night before her disappearance. Why did investigators continue examining Vansice for decades? We explore his alibi, the 2017 grand jury proceedings, DNA and palm-print evidence, and the extraordinary decision to place GPS tracking devices on vehicles connected to him.   TONY JACKSON — The Convicted Serial Offender A violent sexual offender who lived near Jodi's television station in 1995. We examine reported connections to Jodi, alleged jailhouse statements, the mysterious "stiffin' around Tiffin" lyrics, and why investigators ultimately found no evidence linking him to her disappearance. THOMAS CORSCADDEN — The Man in the Van A convicted sex offender who reportedly traveled between Minnesota and Iowa and watched Jodi on television. Could his criminal history and vehicle explain her disappearance? We examine the evidence that led police to investigate—and ultimately clear—him.   CHRISTOPHER REVAK — The Suspected Killer Revisited A man connected to investigations involving violent crimes against women whose name resurfaced in Jodi's case nearly 30 years after she vanished. Why did Mason City investigators revisit this previously dismissed lead in 2024?   BRAD MILLERBERND — The Former Husband Under Scrutiny After watching renewed coverage of Jodi's disappearance, Patty Niemeyer—Jodi's childhood friend and Millerbernd's former wife—raised concerns about his past interest in Jodi. We examine the reported white van connection, witness sketches, and searches in Winsted, Minnesota, that failed to uncover human remains.   THE UNKNOWN STALKER THEORY Before disappearing, Jodi reported being followed by someone driving a white pickup truck. She also reportedly received disturbing telephone calls. Could someone outside her social circle have developed an obsession with the young television anchor? A NEW SUSPECT IN 2026? Private investigator Steve Ridge says he has identified a previously unnamed potential suspect and submitted more than two dozen pieces of circumstantial evidence to investigators. We discuss the reported statements from a former girlfriend and why this development could be significant.   THE QUESTIONS THAT REMAIN Could the partial palm print recovered from Jodi's car hold the key to the case? Was the mysterious white van connected to her abduction? Did investigators overlook an important lead? Or has the person responsible remained unidentified for more than three decades? We examine what supports each theory, what contradicts it, and why none has resulted in criminal charges. No one discussed in this episode has been charged in connection with Jodi Huisentruit's disappearance. Allegations, investigative leads, and unproven theories should not be treated as evidence of guilt. JOIN THE INVESTIGATION Who do YOU believe is responsible for Jodi Huisentruit's disappearance? The Disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit - Case Breakdown

On June 27, 1995, 27-year-old television news anchor Jodi Huisentruit disappeared outside her apartment in Mason City, Iowa, just minutes after telling a coworker she was running late for work. When police arrived, they discovered Jodi's red Mazda Miata still parked outside her apartment. Her belongings were scattered across the parking lot, her car key was bent, and investigators found signs of a violent struggle. Jodi was nowhere to be found. More than 31 years later, nobody has been charged, and Jodi's remains have never been recovered. In this episode of True Crime Unsolved, Sean and Myles examine the mysterious disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit, reconstructing her final known movements, the evidence left behind, and the troubling indications that someone may have been stalking the young television anchor before she vanished. Jodi had previously reported being followed by a mysterious white pickup truck. Just one day before her disappearance, she reportedly told acquaintances about disturbing telephone calls. A witness also reported seeing a white Ford Econoline-style van near her apartment in the early morning hours of June 27. Was Jodi targeted by someone who knew her? Was an obsessive viewer watching her movements? And why did her disappearance occur on the one morning she overslept for work? We also examine John Vansice, a close friend who said he was the last person to see Jodi before her disappearance, and the decades of investigative attention that followed. Vansice was never charged and denied involvement. ### IN THIS EPISODE - Who was Jodi Huisentruit, and what was happening in her life before she vanished? - The final 24 hours before her disappearance - The mysterious 4 a.m. telephone call - Evidence from the parking lot and Jodi's Mazda Miata - The unidentified palm print and bent car key - The mysterious white van reported near her apartment - Reports of stalking, harassment, and disturbing phone calls - John Vansice and his relationship with Jodi - The investigation, federal grand juries, and decades of unanswered questions - Private investigator Steve Ridge's newly reported 2026 investigative developments ### MORE JODI HUISENTRUIT COVERAGE COMING This episode begins our extended investigation into Jodi's disappearance. We'll be taking a deeper look at the suspects, persons of interest, and competing theories that have emerged over the years. The Disappearance of James Yoblonski - An Interview w/ Bill Yoblonski

On June 12, 2023, **13-year-old James Yoblonski** left his family home in rural Wisconsin in the middle of the night, taking his father’s van and cellphone. He has not been seen since. In this episode of **True Crime Unsolved**, Sean Cahill and Myles Reiff sit down with James’s father, **Bill Yoblonski**, for an in-depth conversation about the night his son disappeared, the evidence that still troubles him, the investigation that followed, and why Bill believes James did not simply run away on his own. Bill recounts waking up to find his phone missing, James gone, and the family van no longer parked outside. He describes learning that James had apparently left with multiple bags, that a handgun was missing from a safe at Bill’s business, and that the van had traveled to the business twice before ultimately being abandoned near the Baraboo Bluffs. Bill believes the second visit to the shop may be especially important. He has long suspected that someone may have met James there and may even have been driving the van afterward. That is Bill’s theory — not an established fact. In this interview, Bill discusses: * The last normal day he spent with James* The moment he realized James and the van were gone* The two visits to his business that night* The missing handgun and large duffel bag* Why Bill believes James may have been communicating with someone* The strange Snapchat video posted during the disappearance* Why Bill believes the words in that video sounded unlike his son* His belief that a hand visible near the steering wheel may not have been James’s* The belongings recovered in the woods* Why Bill disputes calling that location a “campsite”* The missing dashcam footage from the van* His concerns about how the investigation was handled* Searches involving K9s, aircraft and law enforcement* The public search Bill says was restricted* His concerns about James’s older brother possibly knowing more — which Bill himself calls only a suspicion* And the theory Bill returns to again and again: **“I believe he was coaxed into leaving.”** Bill also speaks candidly about what the disappearance has done to his family and the lengths he has gone to trying to find answers. He says he has contacted law enforcement, elected officials, attorneys and investigators, pursued tips outside Wisconsin, and continued raising money for private searches. Despite his frustration, Bill says his main goal has never changed: **He wants his son home.** Near the end of the interview, Bill delivers a direct message to anyone who may know where James is: contact him. Even if someone is afraid to speak to law enforcement, he says he will do whatever he can to bring James home. James would now be 16 years old. If you have credible information regarding the disappearance or current whereabouts of James Yoblonski, please contact the appropriate Wisconsin authorities. ## LISTEN TO TRUE CRIME UNSOLVED Apple Podcasts:[https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/true-crime-unsolved/id1848906709](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/true-crime-unsolved/id1848906709) Spotify:[https://open.spotify.com/show/6MhlBrpvNnRJZ73TCWnnqO](https://open.spotify.com/show/6MhlBrpvNnRJZ73TCWnnqO) Amazon Music:[https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/4ba9885c-dd47-480e-8037-6d77f415c101/true-crime-unsolved](https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/4ba9885c-dd47-480e-8037-6d77f415c101/true-crime-unsolved) Pocket Casts:[https://pca.st/za1ydvhj](https://pca.st/za1ydvhj) ## SUPPORT TRUE CRIME UNSOLVED Join the **True Crime Unsolved Investigators** and help support independent research, family interviews, public-records work and continued coverage of unresolved cases. ## ABOUT TRUE CRIME UNSOLVED Hosted by **Sean Cahill and Myles Reiff**, True Crime Unsolved investigates missing persons, suspicious deaths, cold cases and unresolved mysteries through interviews, public records, independent research and long-form analysis. ## DISCLAIMER This episode presents the Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Disappearance of James Yoblonski - Case Breakdown

On June 12, 2023, **13-year-old James Yoblonski** quietly left his rural Wisconsin home in the middle of the night. He packed two duffel bags and a backpack, took his father’s cellphone, climbed into the family minivan despite having virtually no road-driving experience, and disappeared into the darkness. Hours later, the van was found abandoned roughly 16 miles from home near the **Baraboo Bluffs** along U.S. Highway 12. The keys were still inside. The window was down. James was gone. Searchers later found some of James’s clothing, bags, hygiene supplies and his father’s cellphone in nearby woods. But several important things were missing: * James himself* A .380-caliber handgun taken from a safe at his father’s business* A large duffel bag* Another cellphone James may have had access to Three years later, none have been found. In this episode of **True Crime Unsolved**, Sean Cahill and Myles Reiff break down one of Wisconsin’s strangest active missing-person cases. Security footage and cellphone data reportedly helped investigators reconstruct part of James’s route that night. After leaving home shortly before 1:00 a.m., the van traveled to his father Bill’s business, headed toward Baraboo, then **returned to the business a second time** before ultimately ending up near the Baraboo Bluffs. Why did James go back? Was he retrieving something? Was he meeting someone? Was another person involved? Then there is the disturbing **Snapchat video** James reportedly posted that night. In it, he says the people who care about him are not to blame and appears frightened and emotionally distressed — but never clearly explains what he intends to do. James’s father, **Bill Yoblonski**, believes the language in the video sounded unlike his son and has questioned whether James may have been repeating words supplied by someone else. Bill has also questioned whether a hand briefly visible near the steering wheel belongs to James. Those are Bill’s interpretations, not established facts. As of September 2026, **James Yoblonski remains missing**. He would now be 16 years old. The Wisconsin Department of Justice continues to list James as a **missing endangered child**, and there is a **$10,000 reward** for information in the case. If you have genuine information about James’s disappearance or current whereabouts, please contact the **Sauk County Sheriff’s Office** or the **Wisconsin Department of Justice Missing Persons Clearinghouse**. But Andrew never went to school. Instead, he waited until his family had left the house, returned home, changed out of his uniform, withdrew £200 from his bank account, and traveled alone by train to London. At approximately **11:25 a.m.**, CCTV captured Andrew walking out of **King’s Cross Station**. It remains the last confirmed sighting of him. Nearly two decades later, nobody knows why Andrew secretly traveled to London that morning — or what happened after he walked out of the station. Andrew was an academically gifted, quiet, introverted teenager with a perfect school attendance record. His family described him as a “home bird” who enjoyed video games, mathematics, and bands like Slipknot, Muse, and Funeral for a Friend. Nothing about his life seemed to suggest that he was preparing to run away. Yet on the morning he vanished, Andrew made a series of deliberate choices: * He pretended to leave for school* Returned home after his family left* Changed into civilian clothes* Took his PlayStation Portable* Withdrew nearly all the money from his bank account* Bought a **one-way ticket to London*** Declined a return ticket that would have cost only slightly more* Traveled alone for nearly two hours* Walked out of King’s Cross Station And then the trail ends.
