In this week’s episode of Cozy Comfort Club, we’re returning to the Yorkshire Dales to discuss All Creatures Great and Small Season 2, Episodes 1 through 3, streaming on PBS Masterpiece. James returns from Scotland with a major career decision hanging over him, Helen faces the aftermath of leaving Hugh at the altar, and the Farnon brothers immediately fall back into their usual chaos. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hall continues holding Skeldale House together as nearly everyone around her hides something. From Tristan’s disastrous encounter with Miss Tompkin’s budgie to James and Helen’s emotional rooftop conversation, these episodes balance hilarious veterinary cases with romance, grief, family conflict, and questions about where we truly belong. From secretly hiding a dead budgie in a drawer to naming chickens after former girlfriends, Tristan provided exactly the kind of comedic relief I love in a period drama. He also surprised me with moments of insight, whether he was encouraging James to pursue Helen or calling Siegfried out for being stuck in a rut. Favorite Scene My favorite scene was James and Helen’s rooftop conversation. James apologizes for not understanding what the Dalby farm means to the family, and Helen opens up about her mother and the grief she continues to carry. When James and Helen finally kiss and the camera pulls back to show them sitting together on the roof, it is quiet, intimate, and completely earned. Yes, I cried. Theme of This Chapter The central themes of these episodes are belonging, found family, and honesty. Nearly everyone is hiding from something. Helen is avoiding the embarrassment surrounding her broken engagement. James is hiding from his true feelings about Helen and possibly from how he really feels about returning to Scotland. Tristan hides from responsibility, while Siegfried conceals the truth about Tristan’s exam results and his own emotions. These episodes show that belonging is not only about finding the right place. It is also about finding people who love us enough to support us, challenge us, and hold us accountable. Cozy Moments These episodes are filled with everything that makes All Creatures Great and Small such a comforting watch: * The Scottish scenery, trains, buses, haggis, and tatties * Rolling green hills, farms, barns, sheep, and cobblestone streets * Skeldale House and evenings beside the fireplace * Steaming cups of tea, biscuits, cakes, and scones * Crosswords and village markets * James and Tristan’s cozy green vests * All of the knitted sweaters * Helen’s green jacket and colorful polka-dot dress * The music, dancing, and community atmosphere of the Daffodil Ball * Chickens, lambs, pigs, horses, cows, birds, and roosters crowing Final Ratings Overall Rating: 4.75 out of 5 starsCozy Rating: 5 out of 5 These episodes were a very strong opening to Season 2. James had his arm up another animal’s behind almost immediately, the Farnon brothers were back to their usual shenanigans, and Mrs. Hall was there absorbing all of the chaos around her. It felt like coming home. I enjoyed these episodes just as much as Season 1 (possibly even more) because I am already familiar with these characters and emotionally invested in their lives. I love that the veterinary cases feel just as important as the interpersonal relationships. The animal stories are never simply included as background. They reveal something about the farmers, the community, and often the veterinarians themselves. I also noticed that Maggie, the barmaid from the Drovers Arms, did not appear in these episodes, although she was mentioned. I hope we see her again because I enjoyed what she brought to Tristan’s story in Season 1. I would absolutely recommend this three-episode chapter to viewers who love character-driven period dramas, slow-burn romance, found family, beautiful countryside, lovable animals, and stories where the quieter emotional moments matter just as much as the larger plot.
