    Volatile Virgo: The Weakness

Louise Peete was warm, charming, and she wrote letters in perfect cursive and arranged roses in cut-glass vases. Yet four of her husbands killed themselves. One of her landlords, a wealthy Denver mining magnate, was found shot dead in a locked room. Decades later, after a parole that should never have been granted, she was executed in the California gas chamber for killing an elderly widow who had taken her in as a boarder. In Cincinnati, a homeless man named Anthony Kirkland beat, strangled, and burned four females between 2006 and 2009. Two were grown women he had known on the street. Two were girls -- fourteen and thirteen -- who had done nothing except cross his path. In rural Russia, Vladimir Kuzmin lured teenage boys into his car, photographed them, and killed them. In northeastern Turkey, the Beast of Artvin spent three winters killing elderly villagers whose homes sat isolated at the end of mountain roads. Episode 12 is the fourth configuration: the Vulnerability Hunter. The Virgo who does not pursue adults who can fight back. Who identifies the person a culture has already agreed not to notice -- the widow, the child, the teenage runaway, the elder at the end of the road -- and uses that invisibility as cover. Four cases. Four Virgos. Four predators whose victim selection is itself the crime. Featuring: Lofie Louise Preslar Peete (September 20, 1880) |Anthony Wayne Kirkland (September 13, 1968) | Vladimir Ivanovich Kuzmin (September 14, 1965) | Adnan Colak (September 5, 1952). Dark Virgo: The Routine

Between June 1962 and January 1964, a man entered thirteen apartments in the Boston area. He talked his way in, using the same phrases. He tied the ligature the same way, finished with the same decorative bow at the throat. He left the victims posed in a specific arrangement. A thirty-year-old man from Malden, a methodical handyman with a spotless kitchen at home, confessed to being the Boston Strangler. His name was Albert DeSalvo. In Phoenix in 2005 and 2006, a man attacked nine women in nine meticulous sexual assaults and killed nine other people in nine equally meticulous shootings. Police called him the Baseline Killer. In North Philadelphia in 1986 and 1987, a soft-spoken tenant named Harrison Graham welcomed women into his one-room apartment and killed seven of them. Officers opened the door and recoiled at the smell. He had kept the bodies around for months. In Texas in January 2001, a convict named Larry Harper led the escape from the Connally Unit and shot himself through the heart inside a Colorado Holiday Inn rather than be taken back. Episode 11 is the third configuration: the Methodical Sexual Killer. The Virgo who turns predation into a craft -- a repeatable procedure with a consistent method, consistent signature, and consistent ritual. Four cases. Four Virgos. Four versions of the same discipline applied to the same darkness. Featuring: Albert Henry DeSalvo (September 3, 1931) | Mark Goudeau (September 6, 1964) | Harrison Frank Graham (September 9, 1959) | Larry James Harper (September 10, 1963). Vile Virgo: The Match

On Christmas Eve 1990, in a basement rec room inScarborough, Ontario, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka drugged Karla's fifteen-year-old sister with stolen veterinary anesthetic and raped her until she asphyxiated on her own vomit. Karla gave Paul her own sister as a wedding gift. They killed two more girls after the wedding, and they filmed it. The videotapes were the evidence. In Los Angeles, a nurse named Carol Bundy met a drifter named Doug Clark in a country-western bar. Within weeks, she was helping him lure teenage sex workers off Sunset Boulevard. When Carol's ex-lover Jack Murray threatened to expose them, Carol shot him in his own van, then cut off his head, took it home, and kept it in the freezer. In San Francisco, Suzan and Michael Carson decided they were vegetarian Muslim witches on a mission from God and killed three people to prove it. Episode 10 is the second configuration: the Matched Pair. The Virgo who finds a partner whose particular darkness fits into the Virgo's own private system so exactly that the two of them become a single, sealed, operational unit. Three couples. Three Virgos. Three versions of the same terrible fit. Featuring: Paul Kenneth Bernardo (August 27, 1964) | CarolMary Bundy (August 26, 1942) | Suzan Bear Carson (September 14, 1941). Virulent Virgo: Unfit

Cora Crippen was loud and theatrical. She drank and had affairs. She spent her homeopath husband's money on gowns, dinners and lodgers. To the neighbors at Hilldrop Crescent, she was a nuisance. To Hawley Harvey Crippen, she was a mistake that had to be corrected. In late January 1910, he dosed her with hyoscine, dismembered her on the kitchen floor, and buried her torso under the coal cellar. Then he moved his secretary into the house. Ninety-four years later in East Yorkshire, Mark Hobson beat his girlfriend Claire Sanderson to death in a drunken rage, bound her with tape, left her body in a wardrobe, waited two days, lured her identical twin sister Diane to the flat, and killed her too. Then he drove to the village of Strensall and murdered an elderly couple in their own kitchen. In Vienna, Estibaliz Carranza shot her husband in their ice-cream parlor, shot her boyfriend a year later, and encased both bodies in cement. Episode 9 is the first configuration: the Unfit Wife Killer. The Virgo whose private standard for a partner, a home, and a domestic image cannot be reconciled with the real person they married -- and who removes the partner instead of revising the standard. Three cases. Three Virgos. Three women erased because they failed a specification they were never told about. Featuring: Hawley Harvey Crippen (September 11, 1862) | MarkRichard Hobson (September 2, 1969) | Estibaliz Carranza Zabala (September 6, 1978).
