Being heard: The Black maternal health gap. Tianna Madison, Faisa Ali & Jilly Isabella

Season 2. Episode 4. Tommee Tippee. You’ve Got This. We’ve Got You. The Black Maternal Health Crisis. In both the US and the UK, Black women are significantly more likely than white women to experience serious complications during pregnancy and childbirth. The disparities are stark, preventable, and demand urgent attention. In this week's episode, Jilly is joined by Tianna Madison, three-time Olympic gold medallist for Team USA, passionate maternal health advocate, and mum to 4-year-old Kai, who knows the devastating reality of the Black maternal health crisis firsthand. They're also joined by maternal health expert Faisa Ali, who holds a Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health, is a trained doula, and has spent more than a decade working on the front lines of maternal healthcare in the US. Together, they explore what it means to navigate pregnancy and birth as a Black woman today. In the US, Black women are 3–4 times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes than white women. In the UK, they are 2–3 times more likely. These are not just statistics, they represent mothers, babies, and families. This is a global crisis that cannot be ignored. This is a powerful and emotional conversation covering: 👉 Medical trauma and maternal mortality 👉 Premature birth and lived experiences 👉 The shocking scale of these disparities 👉 Preparing for the unexpected 👉 What needs to change and how we can all help Please take care while listening or watching. If this feels too difficult right now, we encourage you to come back to this conversation when you're ready.
