heat, hydration & the nervous system: why summer makes us lose our cool

In the final episode of their summer miniseries, Dr. Paige and Melinda dive into how heat and dehydration impact the nervous system — from road rage on 90-degree days to the neurotoxic effects of chronic thermal stress. Dr. Paige shares a harrowing personal story of running out of water on a 14-mile run, and the hosts break down the science of why our bodies (and brains) freak out when we're dehydrated. Key Takeaways Heat changes your mood — Dehydration can make you irritable, angry, tired, and frustratedDehydration heightens pain — The 2014 study showed dehydrated subjects had a greater pain responseYour body goes into survival mode - Fight, flight, or freeze kicks in when dehydrated, causing your body to dump excess weight (including tears) to keep going- Chronic heat stress is neurotoxic Long-term exposure to high temperatures can damage neurons and is linked to Alzheimer's and dementiaKnow your sweatUnderstand how much you sweat and how much sodium you lose to properly rehydrate- It's okay to rest If you're overdoing it in the heat, listen to your body and take care of yourself another wayResources Mentioned 2014 study on dehydration and pain perception (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24384865/)- Heat shock proteins — molecular chaperones critical for protein homeostasis and neuron protection Follow & Subscribe Leave a review if you have a few minutes — it means the world to us! summer body talk, unpacked

The "skinny" trend is creeping back into our feeds, and it's affecting more people than we realize. In this episode, Melinda and Dr. Paige dig into why summer body pressure resurfaces every year, and how to protect your mental and physical wellbeing from it. We cover: - Why body trends cycle back (and what's driving the current "skinny" resurgence) - The difference between body neutrality and body positivity — and why starting with neutrality might be the easier first step - How our bodies are shaped by how we use them (not by trends or comparisons) - Training for function vs. training for looks — and why bodybuilders often struggle with basic strength - Why social comparison has gotten so much harder in the age of global connectivity - Cosmetic procedures: how to check in with yourself before making a change - The link between disconnection from our bodies and rising rates of chronic pain, loneliness, and anxiety - Why confidence — not appearance — is what actually draws people to you. References: Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter Enjoy your summer, wear what makes you feel good, and remember — your body is a vessel that's capable of so much more than how it looks. INTERVIEW: home again: organizing your space, transforming your life

In our first-ever podcast interview, we sit down with Angela Levenson, founder of Home Again Organizing, a Denver-based home organization company that helps people create space for what matters most. Angela shares her journey from the music industry to franchise marketing to discovering her true calling in professional organizing after losing two jobs in three years. We dive deep into the emotional side of home organization — how clutter impacts mental health, burnout, and ADHD, and why letting go of physical items is really about releasing stories, guilt, and outdated versions of ourselves. Angela walks us through her unique process, including guided meditations before every organizing session and her nonprofit partnerships that give donated items a meaningful second life. Whether you're drowning in clutter, moving into a new home, or just trying to build a space that supports the life you actually want to live, this conversation is packed with heartfelt stories and practical wisdom. In this episode: Angela's path from corporate marketing to founding Home Again Organizing Why letting go of stuff is emotional work, not just physical work The endowment effect and how to reframe guilt around gifts Building systems that fit your life instead of forcing yourself to fit your space How sustainable donation partnerships create a "win-win" for clients and community Connect with Angela: Website: www.homeagainorganizing.com Instagram: @homeagainorganizing Facebook: Home Again Organizing Connect with us: hello@dualforcepodcast.com Instagram: @DualForcePodcast @thenurturepodtherapy @persistencedoc YouTube: @DualForcePodcast

breaking the habit loop: what actually makes behaviors stick

In this episode, Dr. Paige and Melinda take a deeper dive into one of their most-requested topics: habits. They go beyond the basics to explore the science of how habits actually form in the brain, why the "21-day rule" is a myth, and the practical strategies you can start using today. What we cover: What is a habit? Habits are automatic behaviors driven by the subconscious and fueled by dopamine — not all of them are good ones. The Willpower Myth & the B=MAP Model — Behavior only happens when Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt align at the same time. Blaming willpower is a losing strategy.Habit Stacking — How to attach a new behavior to an existing one (like balancing on one leg while brushing your teeth).Decrease barriers to starting — Keep your shoes by the door. Put your vitamins by your toothbrush. Remove friction to make starting easier. The 21-Day Myth — Research shows habit formation takes anywhere from 18 to 254 days, depending on the person, the habit, and life circumstances.Personal stories — Melinda shares how recovering from ankle surgery led to overhauling her diet and discovering food allergies. Dr. Paige talks about rebuilding her fitness foundation and using race commitments as accountability.Motivation isn't found — it's generated — Like a power plant, we choose when we are motivated by finding what inspires us.Small wins matter — Acknowledging what you've already achieved reinvigorates motivation and keeps you going.Reframing negative self-talk — Instead of "I can't," try "I can't do this right now, but if I put time and attention into it, maybe I can."The Brain Science — The basal ganglia and striatum are ground zero for habit formation. New habits start like dirt roads and get paved over time with repetition. The Two-Minute Rule (James Clear) — Break your goal into the smallest possible action. Read one page. Put your feet on the floor. Just start.Neurodivergence, aging, and habits — How habits look different for different brains, and how repetitive physical and mental activity can support brain health as we age.Slow down — Speed is not always better. Don't rush through the things you're supposed to enjoy.Key takeaway: You don't have to overhaul everything at once. Build habits in pieces, adapt them to your life, and give yourself time and grace in the process. the 5 love languages: what they are, how they change, and how to actually use them

Do you know your love language? More importantly — do you know that it can change? In this episode, we're breaking down Gary Chapman's five love languages: words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, receiving gifts, and acts of service. We talk about what each one actually looks like in real life, how to show up for the people in your life based on their love language, and what to avoid if you want your efforts to actually land. But we go deeper than the basics. We get into how your upbringing shapes the way you give and receive love, why your love language can shift depending on what you're healing from or going through, and how physical touch connects directly to your nervous system and your sense of safety. We also talk about love languages outside of romantic relationships — in friendships, in everyday interactions, and even in how you show up at work. The big theme running through all of it? Communication. Because without it, love languages are just guesswork. Whether you've taken the quiz a dozen times or you're hearing about this for the first time, there's something in this episode for you. Take the free five love languages quiz at 5lovelanguages.com and let us know your results — we'd love to hear from you. We want to hear from you: Do you know your love language?
