Stretch. Strengthen. Regulate. TRANSCRIPT: If you are listening to this and you're feeling a little overwhelmed or sad or disconnected or just a little blah, I'm really glad you're here, because even in this moment, listening, breathing. Connection is nervous system regulation, connection matters, and what's really cool is that we're going to move through this together. If you are new here, hi, I'm Rebecca, Aramini Lupo, I'm the creator of Body Illumination. Today I wanted to talk about something that we don't usually discuss. You do your practice, you show up. And then you still feel off or blah. I did my practice, my Praniyama, my yoga, or Pilates, or yin, whatever it might be, you put in the work, but you still feel heavy and sad. And it's not making sense. If that is ever you, maybe today, or maybe in the past, let me just say this very clearly. You are not alone, and there's nothing wrong with you. And your practice didn't fail. What's usually happening is your nervous system is integrating. We tend to think nervous regulation is a switch, like many things. We do somatics, we do a nervous system reset with Vegas nerve toning, and suddenly, we should feel calm and at ease, and sometimes that is the case. But our nervous system is more like the ocean. Some days are calm and glistening, and other days, there's a lot of white caps, and it's very choppy. Your practice isn't meant to flatten the waves. It's there to help you ride them with more awareness. Sometimes our practice or movement helps to lose some things that were being held very quietly in the body. Have you ever noticed that people get sick right when they take a vacation? They've been, go, go, go, go, and then everything slows down, and the body collapses. That is integration. Sometimes emotions show up after the body slows down. And sometimes it's the body that needs to catch up to the mind. Now, it's important to remember that your practice is working, and science supports this. For example, body tapping and gentle somatic exercises, stimulate the vagus nerve and help shift the body from a stress response to a rest and digest state. Breathing with longer exhales has been shown to reduce heart rate and lower stress markers. Subtle movement and fashion work can reduce stored tension and help with emotional regulation. Now, here is the key part. Your perception of what is happening is just as important as the practice itself. You see, your nervous system is not just responding to events. It's responding to how you interpret them. So if you finish a practice and you think, ugh, I should feel better by now. Your body hears pressure. Alternatively, you can think, Oh, I feel something shifting. I don't have to rush this. Something is working. Your body hears safety. This is why guiding your thoughts and your energy is part of regulation. Not forcing positivity, not bypassing what you feel, but gently sending your thoughts in the direction you want to grow. And there's another piece that we often forget. Connection. Regulation doesn't happen only inside you. It's between people. And between nature and even our furry friends. Maybe you need a hug, or maybe you need to look into someone's eyes. Or maybe you need that moment of being seen. This is called co regulation, and it's something that's innately human and natural. So if you're feeling off today or any day, try reaching out. Into the world or even into our body illumination community. Leave a comment, share an insight or an experience. And when you do that, you might not realize it, but you are co-regulating for someone else as well. Go outside, connect with nature, even if it's cold or just look for the sun. Something small, something simple. Maybe find someone that you love to cuddle with and haven't in a long time. Look into someone's eyes. Okay, let's do this. Feel your feet. Now, tap along your colorbones. Inhale, gently. And then let your exhale be longer than that inhale. Now, try to find a yawn or a sway or a twist. Listen to what the body wants to do. And then notice. Even subtle shifts matter. And if today your regular go to practice isn't landing, it doesn't mean you're regressing. It just might mean that your body wants some variety. Maybe body tapping instead of your typical Ian yoga practice. Maybe, maybe rest instead of effort. Your practice still counts, even when you feel heavy. Maybe you just need to wait. Or maybe you need to try something new. Even when the growth feels dormant. And this is where something important comes in. Faith in this amazing, intuitive being that you are. Just like water moves, even through rocky terrain, you'll move through this too. Just like winter, growth is happening even when we can't see it yet.
