I Love My Life--So Why Do I Still Want Something That's Mine? Life Upgrade: Passions

What happens when you genuinely love your life, but still feel like a part of you is asking for more? In week three of the Life Upgrade series, Danielle is talking about passions, purpose, hobbies, motherhood, and the importance of making room for the parts of yourself that exist outside of what everyone else needs from you. This isn't about blowing up a good life in search of something better. It's about becoming more fully alive inside the life you already have. Danielle shares what happened when she left teaching and lost a huge piece of her identity, why becoming a stay-at-home mom didn't erase her need for intellectual stimulation and personal growth, and how starting Becoming Year helped her recognize a common thread running through every chapter of her life: she feels most fulfilled when she's connecting with people, hearing their stories, and helping them trust their own voices. She also explores the difference between contentment and complacency, why constantly consuming inspiration on social media isn't the same as actually participating in your life, and why a passion doesn't need to become a business, make money, or even be something you're particularly good at. Sometimes it's starting the business. Sometimes it's writing. Sometimes it's pickleball, learning mahjong, making sourdough, hosting Sunday dinner, or finally doing the fall activity you've been waiting for someone else to want to do with you. The common thread? Nourishment. What makes you feel curious? What gives you energy? What makes you feel more like yourself? This week's Life Upgrade isn't about adding another obligation to an already-full calendar. It's about noticing what lights you up and intentionally making a little room for it. Your listener assignment: What part of me have I not been making enough room for? If you're navigating motherhood, your 30s or 40s, a career transition, life after leaving the workforce, rediscovering yourself after having kids, finding hobbies as an adult, personal growth, purpose, or simply wondering why a good life can still leave you wanting something that's yours, this conversation is for you. Becoming Year is a podcast about creating more joy, purpose, fulfillment, connection, and intentionality in the life you already have, one small shift at a time. Take Back Your Attention: Does Where Your Focus Goes Match the Life You Want? Life Upgrade Pt. 2

What is getting the best of your attention right now and does it actually deserve it? In Week 2 of the Life Upgrade series, Danielle is taking a closer look at attention: where it goes, what steals it, and whether the way we spend it actually reflects the life we say we want. After asking ChatGPT to time-block a "high-performance week" based on what her life would look like if Becoming Year were already a thriving podcast and community, Danielle discovered something surprising: she didn't necessarily need more time. She needed to stop giving away pieces of her attention to things she hadn't consciously chosen. From constantly switching between household tasks, school volunteering and motherhood, to productive-looking social media rabbit holes, checking the phone out of habit, and sacrificing creative work because it doesn't feel "important enough" yet, this episode explores how fragmented attention can quietly leave us feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and disconnected, even when we're getting a lot done. Danielle shares the simple changes she's making to protect her focus, create more intentional routines, reduce phone and social media distraction, make room for deep work, reading and creativity, and be more present in her relationships. This isn't about becoming more productive or optimizing every minute of your life. It's about alignment. Because maybe you don't need more time. Maybe you need to decide what deserves the attention you already have. This week's Life Upgrade assignment: What is getting the best of my attention right now...and does it deserve it? And what do I say matters to me that is currently getting whatever attention I have left?

How to Take Better Care of Yourself (Without Trying to Fix Yourself) Life Upgrade Pt. 1

What does it actually mean to take better care of yourself, without turning your body, health, or entire life into another project to fix? In Part One of my September Life Upgrade series, I'm looking at my physical health, energy, fitness, food, sleep, routines, and the small ways I've stopped taking care of myself the way I know I need. After a slower summer with less routine, more meals out, less consistent exercise, and way too much caffeine (yes, there was 8pm coffee), I realized I didn't need a dramatic transformation or a completely new wellness routine. I needed to get back into alignment with the woman I already know I want to be. We're talking about getting back into a healthy routine, creating sustainable wellness habits, finding more energy, building discipline without punishment, exercising for strength instead of a smaller body, and learning how to care for yourself while still living a very full, very real life. I also share the realization that changed this entire experiment for me: What if I took care of myself with even a fraction of the attention I give to me kids? From plating my own lunch to getting enough sleep, I'm learning that self-care doesn't have to mean an elaborate morning routine or expensive wellness practices. Sometimes it simply means stopping giving yourself the scraps. In this episode, we get into sustainable health and wellness, morning routines, movement and strength, motherhood and exhaustion, caffeine and energy, discipline vs. restriction, body image, self-care, intentional living, and what it means to create a life that feels more aligned, not more perfect. If you've been feeling out of routine, exhausted, disconnected from yourself, or ready for a reset without reinventing your entire life, this episode is for you. This week's Life Upgrade question: Where have I stopped taking care of myself the way I know I need? And if that feels overwhelming, start smaller: What do I need right now? Because maybe you don't need a different life. Maybe you already have a really good one, and you're ready to see how good it can get.

What if nothing has gone wrong? What if this is actually what becoming feels like? Together, we explore: Why motherhood can feel both beautiful and exhausting at the same timeThe hidden grief of letting go of expectations and dreams that never happenedPractical nervous system tools that help interrupt emotional spirals before they take overHow to stop reacting and start returning to the woman you want to beThe difference between being a thermometer and becoming a thermostat in your own lifeWhy accepting the week you're actually living creates more peace than chasing the "perfect" week If you've been feeling emotionally drained, stuck in overthinking, navigating difficult family relationships, struggling with your identity after becoming a mom, or wondering how to care for yourself while caring for everyone else, this conversation is for you. This isn't an episode about having it all together. It's about learning how to return to yourself--again and again.
