Laura: I do know what you mean. I just like watching you get poetic about humidity. George: Fair. Laura: It's a gorgeous week, though. Genuinely. Sticky, but gorgeous. George: Little sticky. Not uff-da sticky. Manageable sticky. Laura: That's a scale now? George: That's always been a scale. Laura: Okay. George: So look, we've got a LOADED week. Like, calendar-is-full loaded. Laura: Truly. And I want to start with the one I think people are gonna sleep on, which is Night to Unite. George: Tuesday. Laura: Tuesday, August 4th. Dozens of block gatherings across Minneapolis and St. Paul. And it's such a Minnesota thing, right? Like — hey, meet your neighbors, eat a hot dog, be nice to each other. George: Minnesota nice, weaponized for good. Laura: Weaponized nice. George: I grew up on a block that did it every year. My mom would make this bar — a bar, not a cocktail bar, a dessert bar, for the out-of-towners — Laura: George, nobody outside Minnesota is listening for the bar clarification. George: You'd be surprised. Laura: I would NOT be surprised. Anyway. Go check if your block is doing something. And if it's not, be the neighbor who starts it next year. George: That's a good takeaway. Okay, what else Tuesday? Laura: Goo Goo Dolls at Mystic Lake. With Neon Trees. George: Neon Trees! Laura: I knew you'd do that. George: I stand by it. Laura: Wednesday is the wild one, though. Noah Kahan at Target Field — George: Big. Laura: — AND Tomahawk with the Melvins at First Ave. Same night. George: Wait, same night? Laura: Same night. Wednesday the 5th. George: That's a rough choice. That's like, do I want the sing-along-with-forty-thousand-people vibe, or do I want to sweat in a dark room with three hundred people who really, really care about the Melvins. Laura: You just described First Ave in one sentence. George: I love First Ave. Laura: We ALL love First Ave. George: Little black building, changed my life a few times. Laura: Mine too, honestly. That's the one venue where I feel like — you can't fake it. Either the room's alive or it isn't. George: Yeah. Laura: And that room is almost always alive. George: Okay so weekend. Weekend is stacked. Laura: Weekend is BONKERS. Uptown Art Fair, Friday through Sunday. George: Lake of the Isles Parkway. Laura: Around three hundred artists, forty-plus states. Live music, family stuff. This is the one where you park a mile away and you don't care. George: You accept the walk. Laura: You accept the walk. You bring the tote bag. You budget for one thing you didn't plan to buy. George: Every year I say I'm just gonna look and every year I come home with a print. Laura: Because you have no self-control. George: Because I have TASTE, Laura. Laura: Sure. George: And the same weekend, over in St. Paul — Twin Cities Irish Fest. Laura: Harriet Island. Used to be Irish Fair of Minnesota, they rebranded. George: Friday three to eleven, Saturday ten to eleven, Sunday ten to seven. Adults twenty-five bucks. Laura: Which — okay — is a little spendy for a festival. George: Ope, there it is. Laura: What? George: You said spendy. Laura: I did say spendy. Because it IS spendy. George: I'm not arguing, I'm just enjoying it. Laura: Twenty-five bucks though, if you're going for the whole day, with music and dancers and food — that math actually works out. George: Especially Saturday. George: I love it when the wrestling crowd rolls in. It's such a different vibe than a Vikings game. Laura: It really is. You get people flying in from everywhere. Like, everywhere everywhere. George: You're not getting a table, you're not getting parking, you're not getting a moment of peace, and everybody's happy about it. Laura: That's Minnesota in a nutshell, honestly. We wait nine months and then complain we can't get a seat. George: Exactly. We EARNED this. Laura: We earned it. Speaking of earning it — did you make it out at all this past weekend? George: I did, actually. I mostly wandered. Stone Arch Bridge, did the whole thing. Laura: On foot? George: On foot. I know, I know, everybody's on a bike, on a scooter, on whatever. I walked. Like a boring person. Laura: Like a boring OLD person, is what you mean. George: Hey now— Laura: I'm kidding. Kind of. George: The bridge was packed though. Families, couples, dogs, everybody just... out. Laura: That's my favorite version of the Cities. When it's warm and people remember they have neighbors. George: Yes! That's the exact feeling. Did you get out? Laura: I did. I actually went to the Northside Jazz and Heritage Festival on Sunday. George: Oh, hold on — the first-ever one? Laura: The first-ever one. Down at West Broadway and West River Parkway. Free, all day, jazz, soul, gospel. George: And how was it? Because I saw MPR News talking about it and I got a little emotional about the whole thing, honestly. Laura: George, it was beautiful. It was BEAUTIFUL. And I say that as somebody who grew up over there. George: I was gonna say. This one hits different for you. Laura: It hits so different. Because the Northside has a jazz and soul and gospel history that most people who aren't from there just... don't know about. And here we finally are, celebrating it, on the riverfront, in the sun. George: That's a good day. Laura: That's a good day. And it's the FIRST one. So it's gonna grow. George: I gotta go next year. Non-negotiable. Laura: You better. I'll drag you. George: Okay, quick reality check for people driving around right now — the weather. What are we actually looking at this week? Laura: Classic late-July Cities weather.
